#78 American Jack

I was curious about what shield they would use as the "spear" shield, reminds me a bit of the star trek logo, not that that is a bad thing.

My Yankee whittler in cocobolo came yesterday but I cannot open it because it's a gift.
I'm really itching to see this knife and the packaging it comes with. I have been eying it daily to see if it is still available. I have been holding off but not sure how much longer. I think once I see a photo posted I will lose it and pull the trigger on both. If I do, these will be my only 78s. Yeah I say that now. Haha

My knife has finally made it to Seattle!

Pittsburgh PA has become the bowel blockage of the USPS system!
But at least it wasn't a black hole!

Nice knife D Dschal !! Great color. I might have to get one of those. Can you compare the pull to your 77 ? Thanks.
Of course my 77 has been used quite a bit, but I would say the pull on the 78 is very close to the 77, and will be the same after use. I would say a 6, with nice crisp half stops on both blades.

How are the ergonomics when using the pen blade? Debating between this, a Churchill or a Bull Moose. I dislike when the main blade create grip issues while using the secondary but the #78 seems like it should not be an issue

I'm with you. This is why I'm a pen knife guy and not a jack knife guy, who owns both an 81 and a 35...

Yeah, it sort of looks like my index finger is going to lay right on that sharp tang. All I have are pens and this would be my first jack so just not sure how I will like the ergos.
My #13 Clerk is perfect in the hand

Despite the best efforts of the USPS to keep them from me I finally received my Maher&Grosh Yankee Whittlers today. All I can say is boy was it worth the wait!
Absolutely stunning knives with a very high quality feel to them and great construction from GEC, the pulls seem to reverse a trend to lighter pulls and are very crisp 6 to 7 with half stops.
Just gonna post pictures and see if I can answer any questions anyone has, the knife in a couple shots for comparison is a 77.

Those pics are great, guys! Just look at those centered blades and gap free backsprings. GEC sure knows how to give us what we want. Holy Cow!

There is a lot to love about these M&G 78s, really beautiful knives. I love the Federal shield, the match-strike pulls (is that the right term?), and the bareheaded nature of these Whittlers and the choice of covers is most excellent with my nod going towards the Cocobolo. The F&F looks absolutely fantastic and I certainly am looking forward to seeing more pictures.

With all of that said.... I still view these M&G editions similarly to how I view all of their offerings, collector's items. I don't hate the etch, but for me, it would undoubtedly disappear with use, I have not reached a point in my knife hoarding ways where I am comfortable sticking a knife in a drawer and not putting it to daily use. Also, I am a wee bit concerned that the third spring/blade adds too much girth and weight to comfortably carry and handle.

Despite my criticisms though, I would still seriously consider purchasing one if funds were not already committed elsewhere. The pros most definitely outweigh the negatives in this particular instance.

You'll notice in my picture and Augie's comparing the 78 to the 77, that the sleeveboard shape is less pronounced in the 78.
