#78 American Jack

Well I liked my smooth white bone but love my Cocobolo so much I just picked another one out from a different dealer that we’re going fast ! It was my first choice just hope it looks as nice as the one from Collectors knives . Almost got another smooth white bone but it was one picture for all the knives so decided to pick out a Cocobolo so I could at least choose the wood grain and hope for fit and finish like my first “fingers crossed “ :D

Well my Cocobolo made it out of the tube .
Even though I planned on making it a tube/safe queen I couldn’t resist this beauty .
So a wipe down of the factory oil and will be in my pocket to enjoy
It was hard to do Because it really is such a perfect example in all areas .
Also a big thanks to mike at CK knives for sending me this beauty . I like my smooth white bone I Received from another dealer a lot but this Cocobolo edges it out in all areas ! If I had the chance to hand pick one out from a handful this would be the one .My white bone is no slouch but man this Cocobolo has it going on :D

Clearly, one of the nicest I've seen:cool::thumbsup:

Thanks for posting replies and pictures regarding EO mod and the unexpected forced patina ,thank you HWF. Now all I have to do is wait for my own #78 to arrive hopefully this first week of the new year, I can see the forced patina happening pretty quick but taking the Dremel to it may take a bit longer depending how easily I can open it with my thumb nail.
Anyhoo A Happy New Year to all BladeForums members and lurkers.

Have a second Tidioute on order now. Have the Elderberry in my hand and I am hoping to score a Northfield as well. Just love the size, weight and spear blade on this model. My favourite GEC produced in the last couple of years.

I feel the same way. After I got my single blade Tidioute I ordered a Northfield two blade! Such a great pattern.

I am loving my Maher & Grosh in antique yellow bone. Even made a pocket slip for it.
Now I'm struggling with whether to purchase the Northfield in golden brown scrat jigged bone to go with it. Or to wait for the stag.

After a long wait due to a delay by the USPS (surprise!) I got my Smooth White Bone single blade #78.

The bone is really nice, but the blade came with a scratched up spot, the end cap has some scuffs, and the shield cutout is not a perfect fit. It's not issues that impede utility, but I'm a bit surprised by it.

Ouch. That seems very unusual. Ae you going to try and exchange it?

Ok, so sell me on a Cocobolo. I have smooth white bone on order and an elderberry already. I only own a couple of wood handled pocket knives(ebony and rosewood) I had been considering the ebony Northfield, but I have never seen a cocobolo. I quick read of Wikipedia says it are a reddish to orange colour dense wood. The images I see on the web mostly make me think brown. Are the images denying the woods true colours? Are there big variations in the wood tones or the polishing?

Hi Mike ,
I think there will be many many variations in color and tint . Mine seems to have a nice grain and color tones that hits all my likes . The fit and finish seems to be better on my Cocobolo to but again my smooth white bone is great just not as good in comparison. Maybe the Cocobolo is a better run in that area sometimes that can happen or maybe just being wood it’s easier to have near perfect if not absolute perfect transitions as far as not having a sharp edge anywhere on the back strap or bolsters except on the blade edge of course :)
I liked mine so much I ordered another hoping for the same results with fit and finish and walk and talk but was able to pick the best wood grain from pictures .
I think my smooth white bone is a classy looking knife and one that’ll make a great dinner on the town carry .
But man do I love my Cocobolo !
Hope that helps!

IMG_2710.PNG Finally had time to give the 78 a good cleaning and inspection. It now has great (LOUD) snap closing. Almost no snap opening but has a smooth very secure, tight feeling to it. Alittle different action but I like it. Doesn't try to launch itself into the open position like my 77's do and most of my others with a half stop. A solid 6 pull. Great F&F on my example with a centered blade. Overall I am very pleased. No tube queen here and no slip either. Great job GEC!!!!

Lostball Lostball beautiful grain on that one
My Cocobolo has really broken nicely with not as strong snap as my white bone but really nice .Havent even flushed mine out yet and it’s a night and day difference just from couch fondling lol.
