#78 American Jack

Can anyone fill me in on the SMKW SFO Peach Seed single? It isn't on their site yet and I can't seem to find any info on preorder or availability through them. Anyone have experience with SMKW GEC SFO's?
I'd be interested in this as well. Been sitting out on all these nice singles waiting on those peach seed to pop up.

Back to the knives...I really like the shield used on the SMKW SFO and that of GP. Very refreshing and looks great with the lines of the #78.

I also like how CKs shield ended up looking on that SFO.

What shields do people think jive best with the 78s shape?

I like the arrow shield, but I think a plain bar shield would have been great. I think it is often overlooked.

I think the badge shield is the classic for a jack pattern, as found on the M&G.

I am also a big fan of the spear and so far all if the SFO's that have them are gorgeous. I love the leaf on DLT's Appaloosa too.

Must say I like the look of the Red Micarta SFO for C.Risner. If anybody gets hold of one I'd like to see the pictures.

Thanks, Will

I'm not trying to be coy, here. I'm just trying to follow the forum rules. Basically, my understanding is that you need to call the orderer of the SFO on this one.

That would be easy enough to do... if I wasn’t on a cruise ship in the middle of the Caribbean right now with zero cell signal. :(

Guess I’ll miss out on this one unless they still have some in stock when I get back on Saturday which I highly doubt will happen.

Looks like I’ll have to hunt this one down on the exchange.

Here you go Jack...

EO Mod I did on 78 Ironwood. Starting doing these a few months ago because it seems the older I get the more brittle my nails get!

Good looking EO notches, fellas! Looks perfect on this pattern.

Is anyone else noticing that whoever sharpened these at the factory left the ~1/4" of the edge near the tip of the blade on the show side at a VERY obtuse angle?

Almost like they angled back sharply as they were finishing their sharpening pass on that side of the blade. The rest of the edge is nice and even aside from this little spot at the tip, just on the show side. It's quite noticeable to me.

My Black Micarta and both of the Desert Ironwoods I picked up all have this dull spot at the tip to varying degrees. I just spent an hour and a half with the diamond rods on my sharpmaker getting that spot to a proper angle and that was just one of them. SUPER annoying to fix and none of my other GECs have this issue. But if my small sample size of 3 had this obtuse tip then I bet most of them have it.

Don't get me wrong, everything else about this run is superb - I just wish they were a little more careful putting the edge on these.

I've noticed this before with other GEC spearpoint blades. I normally just adjust the angle at the tip so that it matches the rest of the edge. This usually results in the bevel looking a little wider at the tip, but that doesn't bother me too much, and the cutting performance at the tip is improved.

I really like the Northfield jigged bone, but I'm still holding out for the single blade. I feel like it should be hitting the dealers shelves any time, but I haven't seen it available anywhere yet. That SMKW SFO looks nice, too.

Ive got the M&G pick bone and a 2 blade NF golden brown bone. These would be killer with long stamped bolsters and bare ends!
My M&G has nice even pulls on all blades, but the main on my 2 blade NF is really strong. I own about 15 (?) GEC's and this is what I would call a 8.5 -9 pull. Maybe a nail nick would feel more like a 6?
I have to use the pen as a fulcrum and my nail as a lever and hope I get to half stop before my nail rips off.
Talk about child proof, this is no complaint though, I like it
