Holy Sh#t! I just caught that chefs knife post. My world was spinning before this thread and surely it will be after it.. I just want to see that damn chefs knife now. A puff daddy, back up dancing, baggy glittery suit handle, made from the finest of Sugar Glider spinal cords and California spray paint and epoxy. That steel best be handing out reach arounds though... I just want to see what that all looks like.

If you can afford it and it makes you happy, what we think doesn't matter.

I'll just say that on a performance basis there are $15 knives that have equal or better quality steel and geometry, so that money is only going towards cosmetics and perceived social prestige. So even if I had the cash to drop on such a thing without batting an eye, it'd be a pass for me because I don't especially find much value in those particular things.

Bourdain’s Kramer Knife returned, assuming he paid $20,000 for his Chef’s Knife, $231,000USD.

Bob Kramer’s Knives have a dedicated following, plus it’s something I have to carry every single day, why not go for the absolute best? I quantified that by the consistently realized prices Kramer gets for his works.
Carry every day... do you know how many people lose their EDC knives?

And if you don't, you'll always have to worry about it. Carrying $9K on me all the time would be a lot of pressure to me...

Also, $9K is more than I have on all of my accounts together, and $9K would be enough to pay all 3 of my years of college (I only have enough for 2 rn, but will figure it out till then :D )

So, yeah $9K is really a lot for majority of people, will functionality be significantly better than a $50 or $100 knife? - Probs not...
About resale value... think again if you plan to carry it and use it. It will get scratched up and worn out with time.

If you have extra $9K to blow out on a knife - then enjoy your knife my friend.
If your finances will suffer in major way because of it or you had to go into debt because of it - that was not a smart move.

I would never buy a knife via an auction. From what I've seen the prices tend to go way above what you can usually pay for from a dealer. But I have no clue what Bob Kramer folders go for so maybe you got a deal.

Honestly, the price is crazy, but a lot of things are bought and sold every day, at crazy prices, by people who value them and can afford them. I hope you enjoy it, a lot. I (and probably many others), don't have $9k to spend like that, but for those who do, why the heck not?

I too thought the market was too niche, but again, the very recent auction of Anthony Bourdain produced a near 1,000% return on his investment.

Well, not for him it didn't...

Sure, he was famous and died, but that will maybe account for a 60% premium.

I think the "famous-dead-guy-premium" is, or at least can be, a helluva lot higher than 60%. Look at what Hendrix or Garcia or Marley guitars have sold for, for example. Or Clapton, for that matter, and he is still alive. Or a Mantle or Clemente bat.

In any event, buy whatever you want and can afford. Why anyone else cares, or why OP cares what anyone else thinks, is just beyond me.

That is certainly more than I would spend, and I already spend what many think is insane. If you have the money and it brings you joy you couldn't get for less who am I to object.
I however am not a big fan of knives for investment, and to me a knife in that price ranger falls into the biggest sucker category. Are you the biggest sucker or will you be able to find another. The knife itself IMO is worth no where near $9000 and the rest is inflation . At some point it gets to a level too high for everyone.

Well it looks nice and I'm sure you're getting something for your money, but I have no doubt that probably 90% of it went into making it look the way it does.
Personally I have found as much cutting tool as I could ever possibly need at under $75, beyond that I'd be getting nicer but not functionally better.

Why does the Lake warrant that kind of money?! I am still trying to grasp it. It isn't even pretty!

This is how I feel about your knife. I wouldn't trade any of my decent knives for it (other than to sell it to buy other knives), and my highest end knife is a CRK. But I'm just a poor, I guess.

Unless it is a family heirloom and carries a lot of sentimental value, I don't think I would ever spend that much on a knife even if I can.

But having said that, there is no right or wrong in this hobby, so as long it makes you happy.
