A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

I can't speak from personal experience, but I know that some folk have reported they have found the Delrin-handled 47 Hayn Halpers two heavy and bulky with the Sheepsfoot and Pen, and two full-sized blades on that frame, particularly with bolsters, and possibly a shield, would make for a heavy knife for sure

I just received one and yes, it's a thick knife. Much of that can be attributed to GEC doing those as shadow patterns and keeping the
Delrin scales intentionally thick.

Right  I have a Sodbuster, and really like it. The comments put me off getting a Sheepsfoot/pen combination. Be interested to hear how you find it yourself

That Ancient is really cool, not sure I have ever noticed that before and I really like it. That said I am in for what ever the group goes for.

I was excited about it from the first time Charlie told me about it, but it exceeded all my expectations. I've had to lock it away or none of my other knives would be seeing daylight! :D

I REALLY LIKE the idea of a Carpenters Knife!! Regardless of configuration, I also want at least 2 blades!!

Also, I've been lusting over the CASE 6345-1/2 cattle knife. Also a 3-3/4'' equal end pattern, I would love to see a re-make (forum knife or not) in this configuration!

carpenters knife! sheepfoot and clip please, with long pulls. and SupraT thanks for answering my dumba-- questions so often and so patiently. i'm sorry if someone became confrontational about it, but it's one of less than a handful of ways to self educate(with help:) ).thanks Waynorth for stepping in and settling a few things that even Knarfeng was having trouble calming down! SupraT originally showed me that pattern and picture in another thread and i liked it then. by-the-by did you notice where the lock was on the radio jack knife? me likey! thanks, Neal

I will undoubtedly be purchasing one regardless of the design. But I just wanted to toss my $0.02 in on the covers..........snakewood looks outstanding!

An Equal End Jack of Awl Trades?

I'm in.

Sheepsfoot/pen combination. Be interested to hear how you find it yourself

Jack, I carry the Sheepsfoot/pen combo in the 2013 Forum knife (Congress Jack) almost every day. It's my preferred knife now. I have several of this combination on the Congress frame, and the one GEC made is by far my favorite, mainly due to the little things they did with this pattern. It's slimmer than most of the ones I have that are the same length (mainly Fight'n Rooster brand) due to the use of micarta scales (very thin), they set the blades fairly low, and the pen blade spacer is not full length (a nice touch rarely seen). A Wharncliff would set the main blade down into the frame a little more, and I may modify one like that some day. But, overall, it's the combination of a good sized straight edge and a small pointy, curved, pen blade that I find useful.

I like the Lambsfoot, but have a preference for slim knives with two blades, preferably one with a sharp point and one with a curved blade. To me the uses of a straight edge and that of a curved edge are different and complimentary, and too often a pointed blade is handy for general purposes. To that end i would probably carry last years Forum knife if I wasn't already using something I prefer.

One thing that always amazes me is how often really well used knives have been sharpened to a straight, pointy, blade thru continuous use, no matter what the original shape was.

radio jack was whispered at one point, and its awl i can do to not screw up the idea, stripping it down, scraping at the idea. maybe it'll be a cap-lifter and hurrah for Charlie. of course nailing it down, paring away at it i could cope with plan(n)ing a carpenters knife. wood this be the right angle? i don't want to screw up. thanks,Neal p.s. Onspfrk-is that your case cattle knife with the awl? it really is a lovely pattern i've been lusting after for a while now.

Unfortunately, no it is not. I found the image through a Google image search. Prices of good quality originals are significantly out of my reach, as I don't think it was a very common pattern to begin with!

Thanks for that my friend, very interesting to read your observations. It's certainly a combination I like very much much myself, and for the reasons you give

It can sometimes be hard to tell what the blades originally were on those old well-loved knives :)

Although new...I have stumbled upon a few of Charlie's SFO knives...and certainly would be interested too...Looking forward to it.

Hey I thought we were going with a single blade lambsfoot? :D
A carpenters knife sounds great, but the problems with the Hayn Helper double blade could prevail, price is more with multiple blades, etc.
I do love an equal end, although a bigger frame teardrop with a lambsfoot main and a mini clip secondary would be AWESOME. I love a mini clip.
But as long as it has a sheepsfoot or lambsfoot main, I'll be happy.

As you all might surmise, I like getting first shot at a new handle pattern for our annual knife. It makes the final product a little more special. We did a single spring last year, so let's go with a double blade or single blade Jack. That's with one or more blades from one end.
We could do a good old clip and pen, or we could do a sheep foot and clip, like the Carpenter's knife in many old catalogs. Or we could do a single blade.

Given that I'm a relative neophyte and still don't even own a single GEC (a '16 forum knife would be the first, assuming I don't get a wild hair and buy one of the new 77s), I have very little of interest to offer here, but I know that all three of those blade configurations on a suitably-sprung jack knife, facilitating the introduction of a new pattern, would be special on multiple levels. Single-blade seems to be fairly popular here on the porch, so (for instance) a single-blade sheepsfoot somewhat approximating the 11031SH would probably draw a good amount of interest. As a Barlow collector, I have no shortage of two-blade jacks with clip and pen, so of the three suggestions that would probably fall to last, but if executed properly I would still be proud to own one.

Furthermore, I am glad to hop in the back seat and let Charlie drive us down the highway on this whirlwind adventure. :D

Not with me anymore, I hope its new owner enjoy it as much as I did. Anyway great combo

Negative Shadow??
is that an old old pattern of pocket knife hitherto buried in the ruins of the old Schrade Factory and
only recently unearthed by a prairiedog or gopher who has been living off the garbage bins at the local clandestine meth lab?

The only negative shadow in this discussion is the "if i don't get what want I'm taking my bat and going home" stance.
I might be the worlds most cynical pessimistic man and I could do some serious fishing here but that's not why I 'm here and I know where I'd end up(reading one of our dear modulators infringement notices).

For those who came in late: this thread is a discussion ,a think tank if you will for ideas to be thrown around -One of the ideas , only tenuously related to the knife itself and never actually mentioned, is the fact that a small group of people will charge themselves with this enormous task and by doing so will be required to devote a big chunk of their own time for no fiscal gain in order to bring us a beautiful, functional, collectible piece of craftsmanship.

Now on a more positive note I do believe there is some fruit forming on the tree of this thread and its not even March yet.:)
cheers.
