A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

Pardon my lack of knowledge, but what is the difference between the ancients blade above and a lambsfoot blade?

Is it possible for someone to post a comparison pic of the two side by side it would help me understand.

I don't mean to side rail the thread, just curious. I did see the attaches threads on lambsfoot blades but wasnt sure if they addressed that. If they do, I apologize for asking. I've flagged the pages to read later but won't be today.

Thanks

Jim

Sounds like a perfect setup for a vote to me. Clip/Pen vs Sheep/Pen.

Clip in a landslide.

I don't have pictures handy, but in the words of the Duke "I'd hate to have to live on the difference".

Here we go Jim :) Top is a Lambsfoot, then one of Charlie's Ancients, and I've included a Schrade Landshark. There's a lot of similarity, and what distinguishes them from just a long narrow Sheepsfoot or Coping blade is that the edge and rear of the blade are not parallel, there's a subtle, but important, taper  If you want to have a look in the 'Silent Lambsfoot' thread, there's further discussion of the pattern, but sadly a lot of the pics have are no longer hosted

My reason for including the Landshark is that for anyone who has been interested by the discussion, it's not a bad way of trying out that form of blade, without going to a lot of searching or expense

Why not clip (or spear) and sheep? Not exactly sure what this new pattern is, but I assume it would be fine with two full size blades. Clip and sheep does seem a little close to the previous clip/wharnie forum knife. That's why I like the sheep/spear combo, especially if the sheep has a bit of a point and both have heavy swedges.

The ancient blade has a really cool looking cross section though. Even though I am not a fan generally speaking, I find the ancient blade fairly intriguing.

I like this direction a lot. This picture from early in the thread would be my vote for blade combo. Also, thanks for all your work on this.

I'm on board 100% with this blade combo. Spear with belly and a sheep with a straight edge. Suits me just fine! If they do pulls on both sides, they could bury the blades deep in the handle so they aren't obtrusive when using the other blade. Also, long pulls and cut swedges, please!

Yes indeed, I spent six months reading cutlery history books trying to find a name for the blade! ::D For me, it really was fantastic that Charlie and GEC did that run, really pushed the envelope. I hope we see more 'Ancient Barlows' :)

Have a great day my friend. :D
One is amazed at all the foreign blades :D
Best regards

I guess now the fog is thinner, I might chime in :p
All above considered, this is my proposal (quoted from Charlie in the "Elusive Schrade's" thread - I'm referring to the lower knife, the clip/pen jack):

Well, I have enjoyed the spirited discussions here, and would like to say thanks to all who have contributed their pictures and ideas. It all contributes to future knife designs. If not the next Forum knife, maybe a production knife or an SFO. I bring your ideas up with GEC, and we bounce them around, trying to distill or blend them into this project as well as others.

Here is what I am thinking might be a good one to proceed with.
As you all might surmise, I like getting first shot at a new handle pattern for our annual knife. It makes the final product a little more special. We did a single spring last year, so let's go with a double blade or single blade Jack. That's with one or more blades from one end.
We could do a good old clip and pen, or we could do a sheep foot and clip, like the Carpenter's knife in many old catalogs. Or we could do a single blade.

For whatever reasons, I've got a thing about more than one blade per end. I've owned a few; but they never really click with me, even when I really like the pattern. For that reason, I cast my vote for a single blade. (Maybe I'll pull out one of those old Cases, and see if pocketing it for a few days changes my mind)

It does seem odd to me to have an equal end knife with multiple blades at only one end. If we're going to do a 2 spring, why not something like a moose? Spear/sheep or clip/sheep with one full size blade on each end.

Sigh...An equal end jack sounds.......boring to be honest.
I Love the first Idea of your radio scout, and think it would have been a smashing hit...Its disheartening that an outspoken few can cast a negative shadow over the whole deal. Don't let them steal your thunder.
That said, I will quietly go along with whatever is decided, (with one exception). Feels like a missed opportunity to have a real special gem.

Carpenter's knife, you say? You have my full attention now. :) I really like the one pictured w/ spear and sheepfoot. Would love to see an example of a clip & sheepfoot like Charlie mentioned. While I think the GEC 47/74 frame would seem a perfect platform and require little new tooling costs (we need a spear blade, the 47 sheepfoot already exists), I tend to think I'd like it even better on a slightly smaller swayback frame. Regardless, I think it's a neat knife & I'd be tickled to get a modern interpretation of one.

I can't speak from personal experience, but I know that some folk have reported they have found the Delrin-handled 47 Hayn Halpers two heavy and bulky with the Sheepsfoot and Pen, and two full-sized blades on that frame, particularly with bolsters, and possibly a shield, would make for a heavy knife for sure

That Ancient is really cool, not sure I have ever noticed that before and I really like it. That said I am in for what ever the group goes for.
