A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

Here are the closest knives/images I can find to what Bill and I have come up with that represent a do-able knife for 2016, given the collected comments in this thread, and what is on the schedule for GEC.
We can have lined, rounded bolsters like these, and as an alternative, we can specify a clip blade.
I'd like to see an old-timey bar shield like this one in the pics, but the shield is optional also.
Jigged bone seems called for for a knife like this, IMO, but we can negotiate that also.

Yessir, definitely.

I like a spear blade for this particular one. The bar shield on jigged bone and lined bolsters look great. Thanks, Charlie!

I think I need a new keyboard Robin, I generally preview my posts, but am frequently getting small sections of missing type recently :( I posted using my Ipad Mini for the first time in ages yesterday, how on earth anyone manages on a phone, I really don't know!  :D

Evolution is the only way Jack. I have heard it said we will evolve in to one eyed beings with three pointed fingers and a big butt:D

Ok, EE, single spring, Narrow Spear with long pull, lined full bolsters, pointy awl, jigged bone. So, color, shield and jigging pattern are all that's left. :D

I'd love to see a VERY dark red color, which fades at depth. As for the jigging I'd like to see, the more random, and extensive the better. Shield: For some reason, the straight bar shield just seems a bit boring. Maybe an elongated diamond, or something like this one: (yes, the knife in the pic is missing the can opener :o; found the pic on a Google search.)

I like a clip, but a pointy spear would be ok also. I think jigged bone, sawcut bone, or jigged wood would be good. I also like the bar shield.

Judging from some of the characters I see around, evolution may already be well-advanced! :D

I think an overly elaborate shield or significantly sized shield might detract from a Really nice jigging pattern.

Gotta admit a simple bar shield ticks the boxes of both "traditional" and "notable". It's probably the least-represented shield type in my collection short of the Ka-bar dog's head.

GEC has done several different styles of worm groove jigged bone and it would be a fitting choice for a knife patterned after the old Robeson/Terrier knives. Other jigged bone would also be fine though.

jigging above looks great, just go with a dark shade. my color blindness always likes a darker green or red. what about oiled? the spear, if so it goes, should be a tad narrower, long pull. unless a zulu-spear is a serious possibility. ringed bolsters most definitely, maybe 2 or 3, depending on the final look. pointy awl/punch please. i have other types, but nothing as needle like as what was originally proposed. i've really come to like the half rounded punch found on the old german 3 blade a few pages back; hubertus makes a knife with one, called the "professional" you can see on their home page, good luck finding one state side(i've been trying, the one i found on an auction site i didn't have funds for at the time. typical;) ). everything sounds great though. really, would Waynorth come up with something bad? or ugly? nah, don't t'ink so,yah? yah.
thanks, Neal

Very true!

Just had a last minute thought, I know the Punch is more or less set in stone as it were.....but in lieu of a Punch how about a small Pruner blade as an alternative tool? Obviously handy for the gardener but I know no better blade for wire-stripping and a great thing to open plastic blister too or boxes. Unusual item too.:cool:

Thanks, Will

The pruner blade on my SAK is used as often, if not more so than my Main blade and sacking needle/marlin spike together.

Looks great to me.

If we do go with a spear, I like the narrower, pointier ones more than the wide "peanut butter spreader" type.
The bar shield looks great. Being an equal end pattern, I think the shield should be symmetrical.

we've done a lot of clip points the past few years - I like the spear and punch.

Long pull swedged spear. Yes please! Bar shield. Oh yeah.

Charlie, you are on the right track again.
HJ needs a long pull with a swedge, spear or clip.
I hope I don't miss the ordering process.

All this chatter about a Zulu Spear . . . if that were on the table, I'd easily be swayed from a clip to the Zulu spear :D

While I really enjoy my GEC's, the one gripe I have about them is their jigging. It just looks too planned, with too much of a pattern to it. I'd like to see some Rogers style jigging.

Some patterns are more likely to have half stops than others but I've yet to figure out the rhyme or reason for which ones do and don't. And there are lots of exceptions.

Likewise, I don't really think there are any set rules for Zulu spears. Schrade invented it.... but some of the old knives have spears that are so sharpened down that they've been shaped into Zulu spears.

I don't have any strong preferences either way. I think both are fine. BUT one thing to consider is that requests like half stops and a Zulu spear blade may require a new die that GEC isn't going to use on other knives. I'm not sure if that's a realistic possibility. GEC will probably use spear blades on other knives. My GUESS is that they won't be using a Zulu spear or half stops on their other equal end knives.
