A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

While I really enjoy my GEC's, the one gripe I have about them is their jigging. It just looks too planned, with too much of a pattern to it. I'd like to see some Rogers style jigging.

I totally agree with this. Random, deep, and sharp for me

GEC has the widest range of jigging and IMO the best jigging done nowadays.

Oh no you didn't. ;) :D Please use a classic shield of some sort.  I think the bar shield is a good choice but anything classic would be ok with me. I prefer no clouds, rainbows or unicorns.

Sometimes I just don't understand this forum. Jake, what could you possibly have against unicorns?! They are essentially horses (traditional), with fixed blades (also traditional) made of natural materials (which is extremely traditional) attached to their heads. That's it! I'm done with this place.

Here are the closest knives/images I can find to what Bill and I have come up with that represent a do-able knife for 2016, given the collected comments in this thread, and what is on the schedule for GEC.
We can have lined, rounded bolsters like these, and as an alternative, we can specify a clip blade.
I'd like to see an old-timey bar shield like this one in the pics, but the shield is optional also.
Jigged bone seems called for for a knife like this, IMO, but we can negotiate that also.

Please comment, and let us know if we are on the right track.

I love these! I prefer the spear blade and wouldn't mind seeing it with a long pull. Also, what about rat tail bolsters instead of just lined?

I would prefer to see this on a 3 3/4 frame. There's a million 15's already and this is already very reminiscent of a White Owl. 3 3/4 is a sweet spot for me. I agree, jigged bone would be great. I prefer the darker colors. Maybe dusk or blackwater?

Thanks for all your hard work Charlie!

I'm replying here since I didn't want to take us off track in the poll thread. Hope that's OK.

As a forum knife, there's very little I like about this pattern. Harness knives are regularly available, and we had a single spring design last year. For me, a Spear fits the pattern, a Clip doesn't.

I'm not a harness jack collector and agree with you. But it does seem a fitting choice since since harness jacks are Charlie's thing and he stepped up again this year even though last year was supposed to be the last time. I think his original idea of a caplifter would have ended up with a run of harness jacks as well since he wanted to do them anyway. So this is sort of two birds with one stone. Although I'm not really a harness jack collector, I think the single spring is pretty unusual for a harness jack and that makes it more interesting to me. I think it will be a nice one.

Doh! I guess I should have noticed there was already a poll! I love the knife already.

the polarizing unicorn debate ;)

I always had a feeling it would be a unicorn that ultimately takes down the porch. :o

And now... TO THE POLL THREAD! :D

I saw Jack's post there, and had the same reaction. I wanted to reply, but didn't want to derail the thread.

My thoughts mirror Jack's exactly. A harness jack is a fine knife, but they are readily available. I just did a quick search and found half a dozen dealers that have medium sized equal end single spring harness jacks for sale. Having a marketing etch on the blade is meaningless to me, as the only way it'll remain visible for more than a couple weeks is if the knife isn't worthy of pocket time.

I'm happy that another forum knife is being made, and I'm glad that many people seem to be interested in it again. I just don't think that this is the one for me. Maybe next year. :)

A search of GEC Distributors yields only 10 equal end harness jacks for sale... total... and 9 of them are with one dealer and stag-handled. All 10 are from 2008. None of them are single spring.

Well, we could always request that the punch be changed to Jack's favorite...... a bottle opener! :D
I really don't mind either way, but I would love to see blackwater jig bone on this one!

The Schatt&Morgan from 2009 is the only modern double end harness jack that I've seen. It's actually 2-springs but otherwise it's similar. I'm not really trying to argue one way or the other. I'm just clarifying some details.

With the polls underway it seems somewhat set. But if we don't do the caplifter, it would be a good opportunity for a dealer to pick it up as a SFO. It's about as close to a sure thing as you can get in this industry. There's a huge demand for caplifters. You could even etch "BS" on the blades and they'd still sell. ;)

I thought I'd give some equal time to Clip bladed Equal-Enders!
I think they look good. It's true that a Spear flows with the EE shape, but clips look interesting and purposeful.
Either is fine with me, but being a cantankerous old $art, I prefer a clip!!:D

Hey, I like bottle-openers! :D

They all look GREAT Charlie, but I thought we were talking a single-spring knife with a punch?

I Wish we were still talking about a cattle knife. Still would prefer the spear though

I was just trying to show an example of a Clip in an EE, Jack. Sorry to mislead!
Ignore the extra blades please!!

This pattern will eventually become a Scout, and a Cattle knife, but not just yet as far as I know!

Here is a first draft of the proposed BF knife. You can see it has a Clip blade, but Bill has given us the option of a Spear blade!!
