The #74 is one of the very few knives I bought in the near past...for good reasons :)
I'd like the zulu spear blade, but prefer stainless, so I got the drop point version and I'm very happy with it.
Although, to be honest, I might send it to Glenn for a rehandle

Fausto, if you do decided to get the handle replaced I really like to see it. The stainless 74 with American Chestnut is my most used 74. It seems to be holding up well but if it ever becomes severely worn, it would be nice to have an idea how a rehandle might turn out.

I really like the grooved northfield bone. It looks like an attempt at imitation stag to me. I was wondering why they didn't do a stag run on the 74s this time. Maybe that was their intention.

Erik, there seems to be a shortage of stag for the larger patterns at this time. GEC was sourcing it from India directly, but that has changed due to export law in India. GEC's only other option is to source it from US suppliers with stock on hand, and it is prohibitively expensive for them to buy it that way. Too bad for stag lovers, I'm afraid. :( The "Cougar Clawed Bone" is an attempt to fill the void.

Meako, your 'spring green' has a lot of yellow in it compared to others that have passed through my hands... I mean REALLY a lot of yellow. Just a comment.

Jeff, you're correct on the 73/74 patterns - the two patterns are so similar in size and shape it makes me wonder why GEC makes both. They are great patterns though. ;)

Alan, the release of the 74's has been interrupted by some other projects going on at GEC; some is material availability and some is due to several SFOs coming up. I understand the Cougar Claws are shipping this week. :D

My jigged Heartland arrived finally, like always it seems like my pictures were rushed and not great but oh well. The jigged bone feels great in hand and especially in person the color is beautiful. It has a lighter pull then the ebony but both are nice and pinchable. I think the 74 is now officially my favorite GEC pattern. Ticks all the boxes : )

Very nice Drew; I like the bone on that Heartland. Despite the controversy it came out really good!

Nice wood on that Mustang, Fausto!

yeeer haaarrr ! geddin thar (whipcrack).
Heres the herd as promised. Not so much a stampede as precision dressage.

.
I have however paid the penalty for being a sucker for green bone and being too far away. I pounced on the first one I saw that came up on the dealer site and I'm kind of regretting it now and wishing I'd opted for Cocobolo instead.
Not to worry -there's a lot to like about this Stallion. Slimness has been mentioned and it is perfectly centered. As always it is well built and came sharp enough for me. My only criticism is the dye job.

Did it it start life as a yellow rose and get dropped in the green by mistake?

What on Earth happened here?
20170125_114118_001_zpsrjegfpfv.jpg

Did they farm the work off to Case for that special wishy washy effect?
Not many of these have appeared in the corral yet and I'm starting to see why.
GEC has in the past done a LOT better with green dye . Spring Onion or Sea Weed Green are more accurate names for this colour -but who would want that?
Its a user.I'm naming it Sylvester.

That's quite the stable ya got there, meako! That green is a little different. Looks kinda cool! Maybe a few weeks in the pocket will mellow out the yellow?

Wow, Drew! Ya got the complete Heartland set...beautiful!

This one just showed up today, and it seems to be fine mechanically and cosmetically. This is the one I will carry daily for a while, and let the wear & patina chips fall where they may. Cocobolo will stay mainly in the knife chest...for now, anyway. :D

Thanks Barry- Its good to get your opinion and know that I'm not just being princess picky pants about the lack of green dye-:D I've looked at as many as I can find on all the dealer sites and I'm thinking mine is slightly anaemic.
But hey -life would be pretty boring if we were all the same. Its the tyranny of distance.
Happy Australia Day one and all.(a day on which everybody celebrates having the day off-especially when it falls on Thursday so you take Friday off too and have a 4 day weekend-awesome -bet the Kiwis haven't got that:thumbup:- the best part is probably only 20 per cent of Australians even know what Australia day is about)
Thanks GE- yours looks to more classy.
I'm taking my standard (the heraldic whinging gasbag) and raising it over in the GEC thread if anyone is interested:rolleyes:
keep em coming.

Nothing at all wrong with your pictures my friend and your Heartlands both are fine looking knives . Congrats for being able to get both of the 1 of 50's. Very nice

Thank you.
As for the rehandle, it's pretty much decided; I assume I will send out the knife when I get back home from the holidays (if the talented craftsman is available of course ;))

I really like the jigging on that last stallion model. If I could be sure to get one like the top one on the current cover, I'd be very tempted. My favorite jigging is the kind that's coarse and linear and stripey like the burnt orange Navys (worm groove?), though.

They made 74s wth the same orange bone you're describing.

Many thanks my friends on the Heartland compliments :) Usually I am not this lucky in the SFO game and feel very fortunate. Now I just need to take stock for a moment, my better angels are telling me to just keep one. This whole run produced some outstanding knives. James what a great thread, thank you for starting it!

Oh, that's just evil showing me a pattern I like with jigging I really like that's probably years old and impossible to find. :D :p
(Thanks for the head's up. I'll keep an eye out just in case.)

The jigging on the top one in this photo reminds me of that & I like it. Not as fond of the ones where the jigging criss crosses, but linear parallel jigging, yesss please. Except, no. I have three already so no more.

Any one have a cotton sampler I think they were on the 74 frame as well. I 3would like to see a comparison with some of the newer 74s

The orange was made in 2016 and i still see them go for about list price at auction occasionally.

I converted my Autumn Leaf Jigged Bone

to Chestnut Jigged Bone

Now all I need to do is start cuttin' stuff ;)

Me too, Jeff. Thanks!

Alan, here's a good read:

Dyeing Bone: A Tutorial

I used dark brown Rit dye and periodically checked how the dye was taking. (I deviate from the tutorial a little... I pour the hot dye solution into a glass and suspend the knife in the dye, i.e. handle only.)

Thank you AL. Really helpful. I'm not sure I would ever do this, but you never know:rolleyes:
