A close encounter in NYC yesterday...

I can't agree with this more.

It's policies like these that make myself and quite a few others (law abiding citizens in every respect) distrust and utterly refuse to cooperate/deal with the police in any way. Basically, unless there is something pressing, I refuse to speak to or otherwise help a cop in anyway.

I have to agree with you there, the situation is definitely much worse in the larger cities but it seems like almost every single cop i interact with just out on the town is so hell bent on harassing people and shooting their way through any and all problems that it feels somewhat naive to trust police officers or call them when sensitive situations arise. Don't get me wrong, there's still a few respectable cops out there but they get harder and harder to find every day.

Its like letting a Genie out of a bottle, you have no idea what you're going to get, but you do know you'll have very little recourse to fair treatment or justice after the fact if you get a rotten one. I can't help but recall the 14 yr old girl that had a Taser dart punched into her skull after her mother called for help. Never mind any cop you cross might be low on their quota...

Most of the time all you need from them is a report so you can file a claim with your insurance co (homeowners or auto), or get a report of a crime committed for a medical claim, and they'll give you a bunch of crap for that too.

Yup, you hit the nail on the head. It's a shame that's the way things are and like you said, sometimes you don't really have a choice but to play along with their pathetic vainglorious attitude in order to avert yourself from court or jail.

It's interesting you mention the man whose two dogs were killed by the police team over minor drug charges, i actually worked with someone who is related to that guy(uncle or cousin or something). From the little he told me about what happened, it sounds like it was some sort of dominance statement or personal attack on that man and his family backed by the police force. It appalls me that his dogs were killed in front of him with his wife/girlfriend and children not only in the house but in the same room.

All you can do is grit your teeth and shake your head. Will they get any justice, find out what BS "evidence" the search warrant was OK'd under? "Just followin' orders / just followin' established procedures" doesn't cut it, especially with a civilian force doing domestic peacekeeping duties.

I'll never forget trying to get a cop to fill out a report following an unprovoked stomping (a total bushwhack really) I took from a bunch of young brothers. Broke my jaw, I'm spitting gobs of blood on the sidewalk in between sentences with the officer. Not only does he not want to put me in the cruiser to look for the perps (it just happened, they had to still be in the area), but he doesn't want to fill out ANY paperwork - "well likely never find them". I insisted and he acts all put out, like I'm being unreasonable. I'm working poor at the time, no health insurance. If I didn't have a police report detailing my injuries as the result of a crime, I'd have been turned away from the ER with ZERO treatment (non life threatening condition, and I got that straight from one of the doctors) despite a tooth hanging by the root and my jaw audibly clacking every time I spit some blood. Thanks buddy.

U cant carry a little folding knife in NYC but in the thousands of restaurants in the city there are countless chefs knives and paring knives and boning knives and butchers knives. All of which are used to commit most knife related crimes. Some thug isn't holding a damascus Sebbie to someones throat demanding their wallet.

lmao thank you.

So I was watching some show on the Travel Channel and the host was bumming around times Square with Paul Schrader, the writer of Taxi Driver. Schrader was commenting on how much of the street scenes were shot in Times Square and how it was so bad that they didn't need to hire any extras. The pimps and hookers and street trash were in plain sight. That was just 30 years ago or so and NYC has been trying to get rid of that image, I'll bet the no tolerance policy towards weapons is just a part of the house cleaning. Food for thought.

Is there some way to make an NYC knife law sticky thread or does one already exist?

I've seen this topic come up more than a dozen times. It would be a service to those not familiar with the laws who must travel or live in NYC.

By the way, I carry a Vic Bantam Alox -- no chance of it snapping open or printing my pocket. I've never found that I need more knife than this while out and about in the City, either.

This just happened to me earlier today as I was getting on the subway. I just moved to NYC about a week and a half ago and I keep (kept...) my Kershaw Baby Boa clipped to my pocket. I always thought that concealing the weapon was the crime, but I'm from Maryland, maybe it's different there or maybe I just got lucky there. Anyway, I learned you can't do this here the hard way.

Edit: Whoops, didn't see how old this thread was. Sorry if I'm grave digging here, just saw it at the bottom of the first page.

What happened ? Were you arrested ?

Thank you for that chilling report. My son is an attorney in NYC (office in Queens). I gave him a Spyderco Police model for Christmas when he was home during the holidays. We live in WV. I have to make sure that he does not ever carry it in the City. I carried a Spyderco Paramilitary all over mid-town as recently as October,2011. I had no idea of the peril I was in.
Thank you for the warning! Ed

Hate to call attention to this, but I imagine once its adopted by NYPD, they'll be using it as justification to inspect any knives they see as well. Can't tell if its a gravity knife without a physical test, and a closer look will let them know if its a "dangerous knife" or not, even if it isn't a gravity knife.

If you have nothing to hide you won't mind this light-stick up your backside...

No, I guess I just got a violation. I've never really had to deal with something like this before so I'm not exactly sure what the weight of it even means but it's a violation of 10-133. I have to appear at court and apparently the charges may go up. Police state for sure.

I'm sorry to hear that.... I see the NYPD writing up summonses all the time in the subway. Mostly people jumping the turnstile.
If you can, you might want to consult with an attorney. I know that cost money, but sometimes these things can be dismissed.
Good luck

In South Africa it's the complete opposite to NYC

We aren't strict on what knife you carry provided the blade length is 4" or under, single edged and you can give a reasonable explanation to why you are carrying it.

Also the cops are generally nice if you nice to them when they pull you over.

Problem comes when you actually use any weapon to defend yourself, then they become complete morons and have no idea what they doing.

True story, a guy was in bed with his wife.
Some guys broke into the house and shot him through his bed.
He pulled his gun hidden under the covers and shot through the covers killing his shooter.

(He was injured but not fatally)

His wife called the cops hoping they'd be helpful but they arrested her husband for murder in spite of all the obvious evidence in his favor

I appreciate the support man. I feel like I'm treated as if I'm a criminal when I don't feel that I've actually harmed anybody. Oh well, this is why I don't like the police to begin with lol.

NYC is a pussy

I agree!

Wow that's crazy. I often have to wonder whether the cops have done me more good or more harm throughout my life. They have yet to solve a case of mine or provide me with any kind of actual help. Unfortunately, I'd rather I was swayed towards liking them but the experience I've had just doesn't add up to that conclusion. Sad, really. I should feel protection as an American citizen when I see an officer, though that is rarely ever the case.

Great, now thy want to give us all radiation even to my children I stroll down the street because guns are the problem for all the worlds crime and terrorism in NYC?!!! Give me a break!! That's the worst thing I've ever heard! It's bad enough TSA wants to do x-rays so they can see through clothing to your sexual genitalia to check for weapons? And that's gotta be healthy right? More cancer causing crap to help them do their danged jobs?!! I live in the NYC area and what they say is true, I have family that are in LE and they tell me the got quotas and some guys are beasts jus taking people down for collars or what not, trying to get overtime on their clocks, get raises, all in the scheme of helping themselves while under the cloak of "doing good" for society. I've had friends deal with actual robberies and gun related break ins, where the police were 20-30 mins late to the scene, but god forbid they pull a guy over for DUI the whole neighborhood task force is there to intimidate. They are no help, I'm not saying try are all bad but many abuse their power as they have throughout history of mankind since LE has been in existence. It's just another major flaw in society. Yes there are bad guys but you also need bad guys to catch em. All I'm saying is be fair, help society, dot abuse your power and earn your respect don't demand it because you wear a uniform. Because after you get out of work, you are a shmuck like any other shmuck on the street.

Again, it goes back to concealment. Concealed means concealed. Next time you see Obama making a public appearance, take a good look at the stern-faced, dark-suited gentlemen (and sometimes a lady or two) who are at his side and back. Do you see any evidence of weapons being carried? Rest assured, the Special Agents of the Secret Service are well-armed. They carry a folding ASP baton, a SIG semi-auto in .357 SIG, an extra magazine for the SIG, handcuffs and their surveillance kit (radio on the belt, sleeve-mounted mike and ear piece). Some carry the HK P90 SMG. Good concealment is king, folks. Know it, practice it and fully incorporate it into your daily lives.

Sir I have a question. I am also a NYC area resident. Regarding carry, is concealed carry legal? If I carry a fixed blade 4-6" IWB concealed carry in my pants and it's covered by my shirt, am I good to go? Or m I breaking the law? Am I allowed to conceal carry my fixed blade or large sebenza on my person for sf defense and what not, as long as it's concealed with no clip showing because it's a fixed blade, is that legally within my rights? Do I have to be a chef or some type of job where I can say I use a knife? Or just concealed? And if I am in upstate new York or westchester or Suffolk county new york, then can I openly carry myfixed blade in a Randall pouch type sheath on my waist? Can someone chime in? We got to the point that says gravity and auto knifed, no good. Bad, but What about a fixed blade in waistband carry?
