Photos A cool looking design from Ozark trail

I would think it only costs a couple pennies to extrude some white plastic into a mold then add some brown paint to it.
As far as HT goes, this one takes a really sharp edge quickly on the bottom of a coffee cup. This tells me it's a usable blade steel, but it's definitely a mystery as there's not anything marked on the knife or package at all.
It's some kind of steel that easily sharpens and can make at least 50 cuts on some thick cardboard
And still cut paper.
I got one that I can actually call a knife, but who knows how consistent they are.
My point is, at that price point it seems suspect. Forgive me if you already said, but where did you buy it?

Walmart, Ozark trail is Walmarts brand of outdoors stuff.

Btw you're perfectly right to question a knife that costs $4 brand new today, I wouldn't call anything about this knife great. definately not great, just passable and more than expected for $4.

I'd rate the one Ozark Trail knife I have a better than the $10 "skulls n zombies" knives at the army surplus store and I don't have to feel bad if I lose or break it.
It's no Spyderco or Benchmade but it was cheaper than a value meal so I don't feel too bad.

At $4 if you lose it, drop it in the lake, whatever, you don't give a damn. That is about it.

Man, OP, I know you probably didn't mean to start anything and you were just sharing your thoughts, but this is like trying to discuss a prius with a 4x4 jeep offroading club. You should've known that generally "the club" doesn't even want to discuss foreign made crap no matter what kind of gas mileage or design characteristics it may have. And if they do say anything it's going to be negative for the most part.

Personally I love blade forums and think the people are awesome, at least most of the regulars and mods I've seen. I don't think anyone really intends to be super mean, it's just they don't want to discuss knives like that because there's really not much to say, and for sure nothing the folks here don't already know.

For four bucks, if it doesn't fold on your fingers, and holds an edge at all, you did okay.

I bought a knife at Dollar Tree for $1.25, just to see how crappy it was...I was not disappointed.
It was magnificently awful!!! :D
The lock was okay though, so I gave it to a friend who would see how much works abuse it could take.
The steel doesn't hold an edge very long (that was a given), but it hasn't fallen apart yet.

It sucks quite a bit, but was certainly worth just over a dollar.

Well, it will cut stuff, like you said. Hopefully, the lock won't fail in such a manner that you get hurt. People spend money, up and down, according to their tastes. You like beer rather than champagne? Heck, me too, but I'll never replace my large Wilson Combat/Sebenza with a four-buck knife.

Do you know how much molds and dies cost?

All I'll say about your purchase is that ER visits and stitches cost a hell of a lot more than a knife that you can trust. Even if you're covered by insurance or workman's comp, it's still not worth the risk - pain and nerve damage suck. If I spent $100 on 4$ knives to find the best one of 25, I still wouldn't trust it.

ZT is doing alright considering they sell out in Minutes to days on knives 100 times that cost or more.

Bummer you don't buy sandwiches, some places make a mean sandwich.
i love a good sammich. cant find a good one for 4 bucks though.:)

agree zt knows what they are doing. they dont need to do entry level. be nice to have an american made zt for 50 bucks though. since we are all wish listing.

Agreed, perhaps I should have said put that 4.00 towards a sandwich :D.

Kai makes kershaw which to me is the more everyday persons price range knife. At my local wally world the have a glass display with Kershaw, gerber, sog, buck.. that gets A LOT of attention. Sometimes I overhear conversations and chuckle.

I'd rather people buy a lower end knife from a reputable company than spend 4 dollars on a ticking time bomb.

Molds and dies are expensive, my good friend who is also a machinist made them for car manufacturers.

By far the best Ozark Trail $4 knife is the G-10 tan flipper, but for some reason it seems they discontinued it. It is a solid knife and gets very sharp. I have two, wish I had bought 10 of them. There are a couple others that are ok, but most of the others are just $4 worth of knife IMO. The tan flipper re-sells on auction sites regularly for $13-15.

They also make an aluminum handle knife in some funky odd colors, but it's a decent capable knife for $4.
