Hello all
I was a member here a few years ago but drifted away and forgot my user name and and password. So I guess I am a virgin all over again. Let me explain my question. I work in a fairly large metropolitan city. I am an executive type so I have to wear at least a shirt and tie daily. My company does not allow firearms on the premises so this rules out my carry of my handgun. (have to leave it in the car) On my way around town to and from on foot, I often see or am approached by mentally unstable individuals or those intent on criminal acts. Just last night I witnessed an attempted purse snatching and an ensuing fight. So here is my question. I carry a messenger type bag with an open side pocket that I could easily use to carry a good folder. My question is, what would you guys suggest as far as a good self defense folder? I never, ever want to have to use it and I have no illusions regarding the possible outcome, but I would feel better knowing I at least have some defense if needed. Sorry for the long winded post.

Why not carry a good police grade pepper spray? Seriously, a knife should be considered a last resort self defense tool IMHO. Besides, you don't want to be that close to the threat.

This.
Some self defense classes would be more valuable to me than relying on a knife. Sorry, I know this doesn't answer your question.

Leave all your personal belongings in the car so it doesn't get stolen and you don't become a target. Become unpretentious, unassuming. Blend.

Plus, you'll be light enough to run swiftly.

I agree with everyone else here, and I especially wouldn't leave a firearm locked up in your car all day, even in a good neighborhood.

Good points by all. Most of the attacks I see aren't motivated by theft. They seem to be drug crazed nut jobs. I am definitely going to pick up some pepper spray. Folder suggestions are still welcome.

125 years your companion for life.

For a folder, get a BM mini-grip for fast action or for your situation, look into a Delica Emerson, the affordable and very disposable Emerson.

intent is 9/10 of the law.
when I carry a knife, (which is always) I intend to only use it as a tool. Never as a weapon.

Wharn. I understand I shouldn't leave a firearm locked in my car for extended periods of time but my commute is an hour or more and runs through several bad areas. I just feel naked without it under the circumstances.

2nd for Pepper Spray

Check your local laws for carrying a knife.

Something slim like a Spyderco Endura (3.75"), Tenacious (3.39"), or Delica (2.88") would be good for your bag side pouch. Or, for something thicker, an Ontario Rat 1 (3.6") or Rat 2 (3").

There are assised-opening versions of the Rat as well as Kershaw Cryo (2.75"), Cryo 2 (3.25"), and Blur (3.4").

There are more expensive options, depending on your budget and oocal laws.

Thanks TravishH. I live in a state which has virtually zero knife laws. Automatics? OK. No length restrictions at all. No carry restrictions.

Why not a 3.5 - 4 inch fixed blade to keep in the bag along with a small can of pepper spray.

If you stab someone, it will be extremely hard to prove that they were trying to take your life unless you were stabbed or shot first. A simple fist-fight won't suffice as an excuse to stab someone.

As your attorney, I'd suggest a big honkin' can of bear mace in your messenger bag purse:thumbup:

;):p

Funny Blues Blender but I have to carry my purse owing to all of the freakin' paperwork I have to deal with. So much for the paperless office. LOL.
