A different EDC option?

A knife is a terrible weapon without training. Get a friend and a permanent marker and put some old clothes on and have them come at you and grapple. Try to mark them with the marker to simulate a knife strike. When done, look for marker. I bet you are both marked up fairly good. Also, unless you have a good guard on the knife you will likely slice your hand pretty good. Having just had surgery in my foot to repair a severed tendon, I can tell you I wouldn't want to have it done to my hand.

Also, I think collapsible batons are restricted in quite a few states.

If you are in a state that allows firearm carry and you don't work in a prohibited place such as government building, an employer can't make up their own laws. Do what you want with that info but if you are somehow discovered to be carrying (which shouldn't happen if discrete, and you leave when asked, you shouldn't have any legal trouble. On the other hand, what your employer does concerning your employment is anyone's guess.

So you are implying that OP's problems are solved by carrying a gun ? I couldn't disagree more ! Guns in untrained hands creates a host of problems in real life . Most people do not have the training or experience with street violence to make the shoot vs no shoot call under extreme stress . Even many LEO are not very well trained for the threats that a lone civilian might face .

Leave the firearm at home secured, not in your car. Please? As far as self defense in a city, awareness is your best tool. Followed by a legal tool you can justify having. Park in well lit areas and carry as little as possible. That being said, if you want a folder that rides low in the pocket, Spyderco has several and so does Benchmade. I will say that a knife should be your last resort. Check pepper spray or a blunt tool.

Blinding strobe/stun/kubaton/knife

Total protection.

Start with a good pair of shoes. Something substantional, for low kicks -- aim at feet, knees and legs.

Then whatever you can afford: a knife, pepper spray, screwdriver, medium size hammer, some batoning tool (telescoping/flash lights). Being armed is an advantage.

Get some training or just train by yourself, there are plenty of youtube videos.

If you can afford, look at fixed blades, under jacket, in pocket etc.

Have your gun, even if you leave it in your car.

Keep a distance and be prepared to hit first. And you worst enemy will be surprise, you won't have time for fear.

Also, you should have something on you -- not only in your bag.

You can't prepare for everything but train a little and have your tools by your side.

Someone is writing Hillary Clinton's talking points.

He never claimed he should buy a firearm and not train. Don't be so doltish in pushing your laughable agenda. You probably think gun free zones work too, huh?

You're making a lot of assumptions.

I'm a member of the NRA and the SAF, and I'm a very vocal advocate for gun rights. I'm an active competitor in action pistol shooting, I've received competent instruction in fighting with a pistol, and I carry a handgun daily.

And I agree with the sentiment that *most* people who carry a gun are not properly trained to defend themselves with it. They'd probably be better served by a rabbit's foot.

Just because you have the right to do a thing doesn't mean that you *should* do a thing.

I'm making assumptions? You claimed that an individual was implying the OP should carry a gun with no training when he said no such thing. Your claim that guns are ineffective without extensive training is the exact argument many left-leaning gun control proponents use. So my statement was not remotely assumptive. My statement was one made based on the evidence provided. Shill your agenda elsewhere.

For self-defense I would recommend pepper spray as others have already or maybe a taser (check laws on that.) A knife though? I would get a waved karambit like the Emerson Combat Karambit. Quick deploying, easy to use in a gross motor skills situation, and IMO one of the more solid karambits on the market. Spyderco Karahawk would work too and is a bit cheaper. However legality wise a karambit COULD be considered a metal knuckle so I would be wary.

Another nod for pepper spray. I carry Fox Labs Mean Green. It dyes the face of the target to make it easier for the police to identify the perpetrator.

I love fighting with fists and blades in training and tournaments but because of this also knows how messy it could be. Anything to solve it quick and at a distance is good in my book.
Less lethal is great too. Though I played killing in some army I'll try to avoid the real thing as much as I can. I hope others do the same to me if later in life I do crazy stuff because of Alzheimers or what not.

Pepper spray is great. It covers medium to extremely close distances.
Contrary to most I like cone fog. It's just easier to aim and the downside of blowback is not much worry to me as long as the other guy still receives most of the load. So far I only used it against dogs and cone fog was effectice and in my opinion I couldn't have hit them with a foam or gel stream. Those little buggers are fast!

This one would work, like a mini foldable kitchen knife. Slashy, stabby, grippy, waveable. What else can we ask?

An XL Espada.

Large size would be enough, XL size is too unwieldy IMO.

Hey Merda ! I assume you is talkin to me . You should maybe learn to not flap yo trap when yo knows nutin' 'bout me or mine .

Your impression that I have a anti-gun agenda like Hillary is hilarious . I'd like to see a federal law protecting every US citizen (including ex-cons) the right to carry open or concealed any weapon available for civilian use . I would like to see suppressors legalized for everyone . And a federal law guaranteeing the right of self defense and defense of vital property .

My original comments are based on decades of experience with all sorts of weapon and unarmed training and being involved in trying to train others . Many people can't even drive a car properly yet somehow believe that the should do so and are safe . Just because you can buy a tool does not qualify you to operate it safely . There are no legal restrictions on gasoline or chainsaws - yet many individuals are just not able to handle them responsibly or safely . Some doltish laughable youngsters should probably not even try to post on this forum .

I would go pepper spray, and then look for another item to buy me time.

As for the gun, I own them but it doesn't make me feel competent to carry for self defense. Shoot at the range, sure. I also own a hammer and saw but don't call myself a carpenter. Having tools and being proficient are totally different. I've seen far far more people who own "defensive" firearms and can't hit a silhouette at 10 yards than people who shoot well under pressure of say competition. Anyone here may be in a different capacity than the average, but I'd wager the average handgun owner is just about as competent at gun fights as the average knife owner is at knife fights.

Even pepper spray requires training , practice and good judgement . If a person goes around insulting others in rude and boorish fashion , nothing will save them from their inevitable comeuppance !

Hey benzy2 ! I completely agree and I like your analogies .

Hey Ninja ! The 4" Talwar SE is one of my favorite SD/ emergency town knifes . And , tragically , they have been discontinued . I love the 5.5" Talwar for on my property . My cane is my primary .

Actually, your comment was knee-jerk and you were inferring people were claiming things they weren't. Perhaps reading comprehension is something you should look into the next time you're looking to train.
