A different EDC option?

I hear ya! I carry one to work too, mainly because I need something big enough for a computer, multiple file folders, notebooks, etc.. My job varies from pushing papers one day, to rolling around in mud the next:D

If you stab someone, it will be extremely hard to prove that they were trying to take your life unless you were stabbed or shot first. A simple fist-fight won't suffice as an excuse to stab someone.

As your attorney, I'd suggest a big honkin' can of bear mace in your messenger bag purse:thumbup:

;):p

That's an odd statement to make. Here in Georgia being threatened with physical violence and fearing for your safety is reason enough to defend your self by what ever means neccessary. Are you seriously suggesting he shouldn't ?

Why would you want to get within 10 feet of someone if you don't have to when there are other options of self defense?

Attempted murder is a universal law and has vague interpretations. I know an acquaintance who is a lawyer that has represented some high-profile clients state-wide. My original point still stands:thumbup:

If you live in a state that has virtually no knife laws and you have some kind satchel in which to carry a knife, why would you choose one that breaks in half on purpose?:p Find a fixed blade that you like. Hell, even NYC allows you to carry a small one. ;)

A stout wooden cane . Carry anywhere in USA and more useful than a knife for SD unless you're already in the clinch .Get some training .

Desperation last ditch backup = 4" CS Talwar SE or equal .

I agree with everyone else here, and I especially wouldn't leave a firearm locked up in your car all day, even in a good neighborhood.

I've never understood this logic.

Given the choice of having to lock a gun in my car or not having a gun at all, why on earth would I choose the latter?

Here in Georgia it's like you say. But it's not like that in many other states
Here in GA we have the stand your ground law.
We need not retreat in the face of danger. And lethal force is justified if you feel you are threatened.

laying pipe all day, literally

I am an executive type so I have to wear at least a shirt and tie daily.

Well at least you can go bottomless when you like. Pretty progressive work place sounds like. :p

I often see or am approached by mentally unstable individuals
Oh sure . . . makes the sane one you meet every now and then welcome don't they. Ahhh life's little pleasures.

Just last night I witnessed an attempted purse snatching and an ensuing fight

Did she beat the snot out of him ? I hope she stole his wallet.

Just a matter of time until the gentleman's cane/walking stick comes back into fashion.

JDM61. I understand your line of thinking. I have a RAT-3 I could drop in there. It's just a matter of what I could defend as a matter necessity should it be uncovered at my workplace. I think a folder would be easier to justify for stupid politically correct reasons.

Bear spray/police mace is good. A collapsible baton would be a very good idea, keeps your attacker further from you and there is less likelihood of "intent."

I've been thinking about a nice cane as my health continues to fail. It'll look smashing I'm sure.

Try a Spyderco Matriarch 2. The reverse "S" blade shape was designed for people with no self defense training to quickly end a threat. Plus it just looks scary as f-ck!

Maybe a Spyderco Endura 4? Might even be useful for cutting a sammich or bagel or something if the need arises...

Good luck, OP! :)

I know many will disagree with me but unless you have had training specifically in using a knife as a defense weapon it is very dangerous. If you encounter an assailant that you can not handle without a weapon and pull a knife chances are he or she will be able to over power you and take your knife then use it against you. I agree with using bear spray it will keep you at a good distance from your attacker and will render them helpless until you can get away. There is no shame in running away when attacked on the street.

I would recommend a Spyderco Endura (and you can get it Emerson waved, too). They are light weight and very strong and are a favorite of the martial crowd.

Besides the pepper spray, which I have seen not work, but usually does, I would carry a steel (not aluminum) ASP baton.

Funny Blues Blender but I have to carry my purse owing to all of the freakin' paperwork I have to deal with. So much for the paperless office. LOL.

I'd like a Blues Blender. I'd dispense cool, smooth drinks like the Muddy Water, the Big Bill Boozy, and Blind Lemon-ade.

I'd carry the Kimber Pepper Blaster and a real cool SAK if I were in your shoes.

You could try an asp talon baton. They have push button retraction so you do not have to smack it against a sidewalk to close it like the older style. Also, to deploy, you can flick downward or extend the shafts manually. It uses locking discs to stay open and when closed, the tip protrudes from the handle for easy extension. The 16 inch version may work well for you.

I didn't suggest a knife b/c having to slash or stab someone is probably very messy. Plus, based on what you said regarding the areas you go to, who wants that nasty blood all over? Hep C and HIV are two unpleasant possibilities that come to mind...

Take some training instruction if you can. A certification program is offered by the manufacturer--I don't know if it is law enforcement only though; most men on my mother's side are active or retired LE so that's how I went. (I'm ex Army, not law enforcement.)--and teaches the strike points and vulnerabilities of both the perp and the weapon. If not through ASP, I'm sure you could get trained elsewhere; do some research...

Sorry for the book, but I wanted to be thorough. Local laws can be ridiculous as they are where I live, so know them and carry accordingly. All in all though, the baton can be an effective tool when used properly ie. it's not a baseball bat...

Good luck w/ whatever you end up choosing.
