A Flaw in the Heat Treat? Or something else?

I was reading the thread mainly to see if I should purchase a BRK&T produced knife, although I was thinking of the Bravo 1, the Recluse does look good too :D. Anything can happen in the next couple of weeks.

Yup, Always have and always will:)

No matter how bad they are:o

You a Falcon or Saints fan?

Falcons, or whatever southern team is playing. Two teams I never pull for are the cowgirls, and the fins.

I'll admit I was debating if I wanted to purchase a BRK&T Bravo I in A-2 based on less than flattering tests and reports I've seen, but I think I saw some more perspective in this thread and others. I sometimes have a tendency to swim in the details and forget to step back and see the other moving parts (Review all relevant information before drawing your own conclusion). One definitely has to consider the QC process and costs/benefits to the consumer. I would think that companies with effectively no questions asked warranties (i.e. BRK&T, ESEE, don't know the others) do all within reasonable cost and time to assure that quality knives are produced and their warranty costs don't sky rocket. I decided that I'll go ahead and pull the trigger when I find a price for a Bravo I that I can afford in the next few weeks or so (fingers crossed). This should be my 1st convex blade.

Thanks for everyone's input on this thread!

I bought a Bravo 1 when they first came out. Great knife. Hated the thumb ramp though, but that was easy for me to fix. I've used it extensively, and would certainly trust it to walk out the door with.

For whatever that is worth.

I do like how the Recluse gives you more grip options with the more barrelled shape on the back end...I think I need to see about getting both!

Good eye! Most companies and makers flare the butt end of their knives. Woodlore style. I think this is a mistake. The big muscle in your palm is only comfortable in one grip with this configuration. Mine as you say are more barrell shaped, back there, and allow ANY grip you can think of.

I can't take credit for seeing that. I was watching Virtuovice's youtube video review of your custom and production Recluse's. Okay I think it's settled, Recluse coming before the Bravo I. I think I would get more use out of it than the B1 all around. Definitely need to think about selling some of my knives :(

One big improvement IMO for the end user is the lack of a thumb ramp. I removed mine easily, but an end user would likely balk at grinding away at the blade of their knife.

Just for what its worth I have used the heck out of both my rampless Bravo-1 and my production Recluse. Batoning included. No problems here.

Thank you!!!

Andy, I have had this conversation on more than one occasion with Robert Dark [who also makes some of the most comfortable and versatile handles on his knives that can be had, bar none.]

I guess the "flared butt" might "look" more appealing to some, but as far as using them... TO ME..... they leave almost everything to be desired. I can't stand them and have gotten to the point where I will not buy a custom that is made that way.

Give me a handle that is comfortable any way I grip it and as far as I am concerned that knife is well on it's way to being a winner. Because if the maker has figured out the handle..... he most likely has figured out the rest of he knife also. ;)

At least this has been my experience. :)

Gotta give credit to Hollowdweller for teaching me that.

Anyway, I contacted Mike Stewart with a link to this thread so I wouldn't need to explain what had happened again, and he said he doesn't read bladeforums. Um... he couldn't click a link to Fiddleback's forum, even though he built a knife for the guy? What???

There's history. I'm just going to leave it at that. Your best bet is to keep after him via Knifeforums.

Waiting for my Recluse in the mail. Bamboo handles with red liners. No doubt it'll be my finest knife and one of my most used. :D

Hey! I had the same type of problem today and I am extremely dissapointed. Bought my first Bark River knife (Fox River) two months ago and used it for the first time this morning to skin and clean a deer. I tried to cut through the joints for the hind quarters, which it did nicely, but it left HUGE chips out of the blade. I couldn't believe it would chip that easily for a $175 knife!!! trying to figure out what to do....so what is the final word with your knife?

Now you know why Mike Stewart will not go to BF and there has been a 'problem' with uploading pics on KF for a few weeks. He does not want to see nor anyone to see in KF pictures of BRKT knives failing on HT.

The Tally so far - Bravo 1, Fox River, Golok (with different steels) and the Recluse - all within 2 months.

Good luck it getting fixed or replaced. Of a refund would be best.

G'day Falcor

Seems to me like another example of you not doing your homework before making emphatic statements

Are you aware of the software update that has caused several problems over there, including the problem with loading pics directly to the KF server?

Were you aware that pics that are hosted elsewhere are still able to be uploaded? So if davjau has the pic hosted online & has the inclination, he is able to post it on the BRK forum?

OH my god

4 knives out of something like 21,000 knives so far this year. This represents a whopping 0.02 % failure rate (or roughly one in every 5,000 knives).

I've got to ask, what's the nature of the axe you have to grind with BRK?

Kind regards
Mick

Firstly, there was some bullshit that happened years ago that is behind Mike not coming to Bladeforums. It has nothing to do with this situation. So that is completely false.

The KF calim was addressed by SC. False.

The tally is 4 knives out of thousands. Really tired of this being played up as significant. In addition, Mike outsources HT to a company that specializes in heat treating blades. Its done by a specialist and not some intern on crack.

Good luck it getting fixed or replaced. Of a refund would be best.

This is the worst part of it since it has been demonstated over and over that BRKT has an excellent warranty and stands by their product.

GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the Fiddleback Forge forum. This is not the whine about BRKT forum. I don't have a problem with the pics of the edge damage, and sadness over the lost knife, but to get out of control, and completely illogically rant against BRKT here is inappropriate. Please start a thread somewhere else, or ammend an old thread with this kind of obtuse rant.

BRKT was by far the best, and ONLY choice for a well done convexed Fiddleback knife. It sucks to see edge damage. That knife should be replaced. It will.

I hate seeing edge damage like that on a knife Davjau. I have nightmares about seeing it happen to one of mine.

To get satisfaction on your issue, simply contact Mike Stewart. The phone # is posted on his website. He is an accomodating, and interesting guy to talk with IMO. Then let us know what has happened in your situation.

I agree this should be about Fiddleback Forge knives. Not here to upset anyone, but if anyone knows of a knife company with a 0% failure rate (or any company, for that matter), please go start a thread on that.
