A HISTORICAL announcement for KAI at SHOT Show 2016 and an entire NEW line of knives.

Many thanks for the members that seem to "get it" about the original post. Mr. Hiroshi Igarashi merely mentioned to me that he had realized a long term dream of his for KAI/ZT to supply knives to his homeland of Japan. At no time did he or any of his representatives give any indication that KAI/ZT was using it as a "mastermind marketing scheme" and there was nothing related to it in their booth area.

The subject is HISTORICAL for HIM. Well Mr. Igarashi, the KAI/ZT team, and well, the modern Japanese military. On the other hand, it is HYSTERICAL that so many here have elected to attempt to turn and twist the story into something completely off-keel.

mqqn, Spot on Brother. Spot on. Thanks for taking the time to address some specific comments.

My dreams of collab Seagal 2.0 folder are crushed... :(

Cold Steel is using up all of Steven's designs now LOL.

Yes, I'm sure you were the only one he told about it while he was at the SHOT booth.

And mqqn, I'm not blaming or belittling them for using an obvious marketing tactic. I'm just saying its HYSTERICAL that one would pretend that it isn't one.

Of course you and Stu are, of course, free to cast it in whatever context you want. And so am I, being that this is General Knife Discussion. Maybe if there was a KAI specific forum just for the fans who have the proper respect, it would be a different matter there. But it isn't the case in General.

Looked at all of those new knives shown on page 1. Not buying a single one of them. Not a one of them does anything for me. Not to mention, knowing Kershaw, they're all probably under four inch blade length.

Hey, as long as they got . . . er. . . . ah. . . . .supporters, (yeah that's the word, supporters!) here why have their own forum? Why invest in livestock when you get the dairy product free?

I didn't think you were belittling them, but it sounded to me like you were inferring that they were specifically making a marketing play, which I do not feel they are doing.

Now they may come out with a "supplied to the Japanese Special Forces" knife in the future, but I don't see that at the moment.

In fact, I don't even see the historic announcement on their news link on their site; seems to this point the whole thing was fairly low-key.

And why have a presence on a forum where their products are constantly berated by people that live to just troll and cause problems?

This thread is itself illustrative of the problem; people posting useless garbage to the detriment of those who just want to discuss the knives.

I have used this analogy before - there are many on this forum that would enjoy going to a newborn ward at a hospital and tell all of the proud new parents all of the flaws in their babies. The golden rule is lost on these people. So be it.

I could not believe it recently when even the low-keyed, even tempered Sal Glesser was pushed to the limits by people on this forum. Ernie Emerson has been called out recently, and in the past.

Is there any manufacturer that can live up to the expectations of the small, vocal group here that are hyper critical of EVERYTHING, likely as some small compensation for their own personal shortcomings?

Yeah! Why can't this forum only be for members who agree with my likes and dislikes! I am getting tired of the disrespectful, baby-insulting, off kilter, hysterical, hateful, garbage posting trolls who have an opinion different than mine.

Talk about personal shortcomings (which you brought up first in this thread...nobody other than you and Stu chose to start tossing personal insults about)....Some members don't share you feelings for KAI. Wah. Get over it. Deal with it and grow. We all do it everyday here when disagreed with. Sheesh.

Nothing HISTORICAL going on. Just MARKETING.

Man I cant believe that a man of Japanese heritage would really have a dream of producing and supplying knives to his own militaries best soldiers. Thats just outrageousto even contemplate. Must be he has ulterior motives. Honestly disagreeing with someone and attacking them are two different things. This country was founded by men who had dreams and worked to make them a reality. I am highly disappointed with this trend of attacking anything that you dont agree with now days. Imagine if Jefferson and Washington had just attacked each other publicly over their disagreements instead of sitting down and putting them aside to form something that turned out great. I know this is just a knife forum and everyone is entitled to opinions but I am speaking on the broader trend of attacking anything we dont agree with. Instead of everything becoming a line in the sand we should work towards more understanding.

The ZT and Japan stuff is really cool. Congrats.

As for the KAI lines, they make me worry about Kershaw. That's truck stop quality right there. Next after faux G10 is fake Damascus and carbon fiber sticker handles. Who ever said they are becoming Gerber 2.0 reflected my fears well. Even M Tech splurges the extra 50 cents per knife for G10. :(

I get the need to cater to the "working man" in a tough economy.

All this new stock does little to cater to knife enthusiasts and existing fan base IMHO.

Many of the new Gerber models look more appealing to me at least LOL.

I guess my biggest issues is value. An 8cr13mov knife with bronze bushings and nicely made g10 scales for $20 had good value. A -10cr.01mov blade and fake g10 for $2 less just seems like a step in the wrong direction. Gerber and Buck almost ran their companies into the ground doing this, and ZT isn't profitable enough (in their own words) to keep their company rolling with loyal buyers. I used to buy a Kershaw every pay check. Now the only KAI knife I want is the Link, but I can't bring myself to do it because of better values out there.

It saddens me.

Show me one piece of official KAI marketing that mentions it.

I'd say Japan supplying anything from outside Japan in an industry Japan already excels in is pretty big.

If I made knives or had a knife company, I'd be pretty damn excited if my local law enforcement wanted to carry my knives, let alone a special forces group. Certainly a testament to ZT's build quality, congrats to KAI et al.

Out of curiosity, what knife to you consider to be a better value than the Link? Is it American made? Are there reliable variants of it? Stonewash or Blackwash? Or is it easier to just ride the bandwagon of BFC?

Buck Vantage. Pick a variation, you can even get a small in S30v for about $50.

And I don't ride on bandwagons. [emoji1]

Hi marcinek -

Your reply shows me that you really are not getting the point of what I am saying.

You and I have been on the board for a long time, seen it all so to speak.

What I am saying has nothing to do with what brand you like, prefer, hate - it does not matter.

What I am saying is that people can be NICE. Have discussions about knives in a gentlemanly way, without little insulting jabs and disrespect.

The shortcoming I am talking about, and why I mentioned the golden rule, is that you should treat people as you desire to be treated. The shortcoming is the inability of people to just be nice.

I would put my history on this board up against anyone; I am nice until it is time to not be nice.

If I don't like the new knife you just posted pictures of because I would not let my sister date a moron that would choose that design/brand/style of knife, I might compliment you on your picture taking, or congratulate you on the purchase that you were excited enough to come here and share with "knife people".

However, this thread shows how some people just don't know how to be nice. I know I won't change that, but it still irks me.

Your complete point in this thread was that by posting the information about Mr Igarashi being proud and announcing that they are sending knives to the Japanese military, it was de facto advertising.

That is pretty obvious, any news release from any company could be deemed advertising / marketing, unless it was in defense of some wrongdoing I suppose.

Bottom line, what did your thought add to Stu's thread? What did any of the posts that I quoted in my rant add to the thread, or my rant for that matter?

None of it was nice and it all took away from what I am here for, and that is the enjoyment of discussing knives with people of a like interest.

Have something critical to say? Great, I might need to hear it, particularly if I am planning on buying that knife, but why can't we add criticism in a constructive, nice way?

I have knives from Kershaw, ZT, Shun, Benchmade, Becker, Chris Reeve, Spyderco, Boker, Great Eastern, Queen, Canal Street, Bear, Buck, JK, Busse and more. I like what I like but I am not here to piss on whatever someone else likes, because I can be NICE about it.

best
