A local guy offered to sell me these knives....

I like them knives according photographs, "Surgical steel is code for garbage " I wouldn't be too sure of this, as genuine surgical steel is definitely not anything close to garbage.... Hospitals and surgeons doesn't use garbage steel, when these blades are cutting human body in order to save it's life....

Pictures however can not do good justice to us,you have access to blades, why not try them before the purchase...

No quick judgment is worth any judgment...if he is genuine guy, he will let you use at least one of them on wood....try re-sharpening, maybe it is worth it.Knives are looking good, but that's not something anyone can say based on pictures what the knife is made of....

Maybe it is garbage, but maybe they will last forever in your service and you may never regret the purchase.

Too many guys judging too quickly here is my opinion...

Surgical steel in reference to this is definitely code for garbage. And even in scalpels its really not great. They are a disposable blade, meant to be used for a few cuts and tossed. No one I know would argue that box cutters are the cats pajamas for knives, scalpels are essentially the same thing, and not a whole lot sharper. (yes I have used both, and sharpened both. And I wouldn't buy a knife in "surgical steel" as that is nothing but marketing mumbojumbo, not a real grade of steel.

Maybe on the marketing front, the term "Space Aged Material" may sell even more products. But the term usually refers to plastic. I'm almost convinced that plastic blades would be better than some of the cheap mystery steel knives I've purchased in the past. With some, I'm convinced that there is absolutely no heat treat performed, and the edge performs like very soft lead.

More problematic than the steel is the depth of the tang. I have had similar knives where the blade separates from the guard which is essentially hollow. That said, these may have a hidden tang construction. More likely, a stick tang. However, there are many out there will full hollow tangs that would be incredibly dangerous to use.

Th knife in your first picture with the yellow bone handle is a Chipaway knife that is currently selling for $25 shipped on Amazon.
