A New Folder from CRK

I just called Heather At CRK about another item I'm looking forward to (custom engraved Shadow III) and asked about the new folder... All she let out was that it is NOT a redesinged Umfaan, and it's smaller that a bread box... Then she giggled at me... I'm a draftsman... CIM/CAM style... I'll go watch the DVD again in slow-mo.
There is a point at the end of the first DVD where Chris is in his loft office showing the design on his laptop in what looks to be SolidWorks (A 3D Cad program)... The handle is the cool part with a concave & convex interlocking pattern that if milled out of micarta, would 'suck' into your grip... More so when wet.

SO I just bought the DVD to see what this Harsey/Reeve Crocodile is... Looks nice when he was showing it in that Solid Works program on his Laptop in his loft... (all at the end of Disc one). I have yet to see all the way through disc two though.

I was praying for the Umfaan, But should it be the Ingwenya (Zulu for Crocodile) I guess I will need to wait until the end of September for Blade West in Portland to get it...

I'm thinking it will be Ingwenya... Thoughts?

If it's a Harsey collaboration then I doubt it will have a zulu name (think more along the lines of Green Beret, Pacific, Neil Roberts, etc).

In the DVD Chris himself called it the zulu name and explained it was Zulu for Crocodile... That is why I referenced it. But you do have a point. And I do respect it. I do not think it would just be "The Crocodile".

Either way it will be out very soon and I will get to hold one when I pick up my knife in the next few weeks. That's the beauty of being in Boise...

Best regards,

I watched the DVD disk 2 the other night, and saw a folder Mr Harsey was working on showed some blades and some handles but no close ups, is that what you guys are talking about the "croc"?

I would imagine CRKs is constant evaluating different knife designs for production. Its called Research and Development and any successful company does it on an on going basis. Very few R&D projects actually make it into production. The knife in the video just happened to be the R&D project that was on the drawing board at that time. I would think the odds of that knife being the folder that makes it to production are small. But it is possible.

I guess we'll see.

I would be a little puzzled though if it's this big military type knife, I mean R&D I understand, but if R&D gives you something customers don't really want, it would seem there is a disconnect.

R&D gives you... development, but not necessarily development in a marketable direction.

OTOH, there has certainly been something of a proliferation of functionally absurd knives brought to the consumer market over the last several years. Seems to me that the so-called "tactical" craze has drawn the broad market further from basic utility, not closer to it.

It might be true that a ninjamonster folder would alienate part of CRK's fan base, but who's to say it wouldn't attract lots of new customers?

Not that this is something I personally want, mind you, just saying....

I was kind of thinking as R&D covering the entire process. Designing a knife, refining the design, figuring out what it would take to manufacture it, estimating the manufacturing costs, researching the market to see if there is a market for it, so on. It is an R&D project up to the point the decision is made to manufacture it, then it becomes a production project.

That said, I could see where CRK might think there is a strong market for the mall ninja knife but I don't see it as the market they are interested in. Let's hope so.

Designers have a way of wanting to broaden their horizons; not always in directions that serve what might be seen as the cores of their portfolios.

For me, the regular Sebenza is where CRK really hits its stride. That pattern is a very, very nice piece of work. Given that I have examples of all three sizes, I'm not all that concerned with what else is produced. They might come up with something as, or even more interesting. Or maybe they won't.

Just because a guy designs something I happen to hold in high esteem, doesn't mean I have to agree with everything else he does. :)

I heard that it was some kind of modified wharncliff bladed type knife???
;)

well, it may just be a dying hope, keep the torch lit though!

Max you can order the DVD from CRK. I think the knife will be of the heavy duty military type, something to knock the socks off Strider and Emerson.:cool:

I got one on order. Have no idea about price or even what it looks like. CRK puts out great stuff and this should be no exception. I just want the first left hand one!:p:cool::D

Max,

If you, or anyone, are close to Boise (Near Chris' shop!), come on over. I'll let you borrow the DVD. I watched it about three times yesterday (both discs).
I have been a 100% pure one peice kind of guy... I think now I'm ready for a folder. Now if I can only find an Umfaan... Or a small Seb. Blade is to far away for me but I'll be ready for Blade West. Anyway, if anyone lives close to Chris' shop, and wants to borrow the DVD, let me know.

Best regards,
Toe Jam

I was thinking about this folder last night at work...because I really didn't have anything else to do. And I'm thinking, hoping maybe, that it is something a little more in the heavy duty category. Basically redefine the Strider/Emerson idea. Think thicker regular with micarta inlay (wood options) with a flat grind thicker blade. Basically as close to a Busse folder as we are going to see......for sometime. Whatever it is, military/heavy duty or not, it will have a redefined, elegance to it and high standards on the fit and finish.

Or maybe I've just been wanting (dreaming) a heavy duty folder lately.

You guys say that if they want a Military themed folder then they should go to Strider. Thats a little selfish, no? Why not CRK make a Military themed folder so they can come to CRK.

You have a good point, but to the already loyal fans, we'd like something new that's aimed at us, not Strider fans.

To me the GB test results should have been a wake up call. CRK creds took a hit, if they start chasing the military market even more, they better deliver the goods.
