A new knife

Reverse image search works well.

www.tineye.com

Take a screenshot of a knife. Post the screenshot to tineye. Tineye searches web, finds additional pics and info about knife.

That takes time, and some folks are just really, really, really busy. I mean, there's time enough to come in here and tell others what they should be doing, but going to look up pics themselves? Oh no, man. Can't be expecting people to exercise a little self agency, that's just barbaric.

Is there an issue with wanting to know what a knife is without having to spend 2 hours a day checking PM’s?

Of course not. I would suggest watching videos, attending knife shows, reading magazines, buying books, visiting stores, talking to vendors, getting catalogs, buying knives, using the search function and making a general effort to learn about the subject. Imposing a rule or repeatedly interrupting and derailing an active discussion to demand information is not called for and frankly rude. The knife shown may be largely irrelevant to the thread of the discussion. While most of us would be happy to assist, you have the responsibility to learn and we do not have a responsibility to tutor you. As we often advise our new members, read before you post.

You can always put up your own thread with the image and ask the members to identify it, and they will likely do so within minutes.

The True North The True North

Let me clarify that I am not calling you entitled, but pointing out what entitlement is.

Let’s just say that everyone starts posting names of the knives they post. Then some guy who can’t PM decides well what are the specs? Lets add those too!! Then some other guy thinks, “Well, what’s the action like?” So now we have to add all this info too?

It’a a slippery slope. We have a Can you identify this knife subforum and we also have a Review and Testing subform. A little time spent on the curious’s part, and a friendly PM can find out all the info one wants on a posted knife photo without a knife name. :)

A 'slippery slope' where our fellow enthusiasts might get carried away and tell us the name and steel and designer of the knives they're proud of owning, in the same comment they show said knives off in?

I don't get the concern or horror. And it 100% makes sense to just include a brief caption when we're able, because like others have said, it's asinine to act like anyone with a question should buy a membership or bloat threads with comments that could have been a single line in another comment pages earlier.

The EDC thread is a laid-back, light-hearted thread where enthusiasts can post a quick pic, ask how folks are doing, engage in some light discourse, and so on.

Also, the idea that someone wants others to make sure they add info so that person won't have to go do some reading, learning, or actual research into a hobby they purport to be an "enthusiast" in seems odd to me, don't you think? Not to mention, if you don't have time to engage with "fellow enthusiasts", while at the same time asking them do something that minimizes your need for interaction, I don't think that tracks, do you?

Haha. Yes, it makes 100% sense to post a caption for YOUR benefit. Thank you for so eloquently showing what entitlement is.

I don’t think anyone has suggested that it be mandatory. It’s just being suggested as a good idea. Especially for the benefit of new-comers to the hobby. Not to say you folks don’t make fine points about a lack of description feeding discussion and discourse.

No need to be so angry.

No one here is angry, and I'm not sure why you keep bringing up that sort of terminology. Some folks will do it, some won't. Most of us won't, especially since it's now understood that people asking for others to change their behavior to personally benefit themselves are doing it because they do not actually want to engage with fellow enthusiasts. Realtalk here, if you don't have time to become part of the community, I'm not sure why you or others in that position would expect others to respect your wishes.

It is insane to me that we're adults even having this conversation, if I'm being honest. "Please make sure to provide the details of any knives you post for those of us who are new." "Soooo....why not engage with that poster on that knife you're interested in?" "CAN'T!! TOO BUSY!!!!"

That doesn't track, sorry.

Just out of curiosity as someone who does like to engage with you guys, if I was interested in knowing more about a posted knife that I'm unfamiliar with entirely, would you suggest that I ask about it in the thread or in a pm? The thought never occurred to PM as I usually reserve that for sales and trades or whatnot. I'm genuinely curious what you guys would prefer because like I mentioned when this thread was started, I never wanna be "that guy" that interrupts or derails a thread, and i try my best not to do so, but I do like engaging and learning more so I usually just ask in the thread. Is that a bad idea or is that all good in your eyes?

R Rich S You can click the link below and get the make, model, and blade steel if you’re so inclined. You have to click on each individual picture and the info is at the bottom.

Feel free to post it in the thread, no one has ever had an issue with that.

In the EDC thread a quick question is generally acceptable. :) If more info is wanted or necessary, a PM is fine. :)

Generally speaking, when someone asks for a knife name in the EDC thread it means that they are actually interested and most likely going to look at purchasing one. :) To my experience anyways. :)

I also want to know who made your coffee pot, Oklahoma Outlaw Oklahoma Outlaw :)

Interestingly enough, it feels like many of the people in this thread asking for picture captions, rarely post knife pictures themselves. Or is it just me ?

That’s a commercial Bunn VP-17SS like you’d see in a cafe. 16 years old and still going strong. It’ll brew 17 carafes per hour….if you’re really thirsty. Lol
Ummm…knives and coffee thread content. 😂🤣😂🤣
You know better!! Hahaha!! 😉

*had to do it. A lighthearted joke in a thread that was warming up. :)

Alright awesome. I didnt think it was bad to do so I just wanted to make sure, reading some of these comments had me second guessing lol

Sharp & Fiery Sharp & Fiery that's usually my case. I'm familiar with A LOT of knives but every now and then a model skips my radar or I lack and don't catch some releases here and there, whatever the case may be. I have a longgggg wish list so usually if I like a knife that I don't know about, I'll ask about it then throw it on the wishlist 😂

Most of you guys here I see every day on the forum. I'm trying to be more active if not with pictures, at least with talking and chatting. So I know most of you guys here from a daily basis visiting. I know you're more or less cool with anything given it sensibly follows some sort of common sense.
