A reality check for most makers

anyone who claims to be able to predict the future is pretty much " hyping " them self up , totally my opinion of course.

Perhaps guess what some makers knives may be of more value down the road , but claiming to accurately predict the future , is quite absurd.

Les , with all due respect you appear to be negative towards Tai's knifemaking ways/style yet in the same light call yourself a Custom Knife Entrepreneur , which is just your buzz word for DEALER( which you make sure to point out you are a not a dealer every chance you get ).

John, Les probably used the wrong word as a businessman saying he can predict future business trends sounds a little arrogant. However, savvy businessmen project future business trends all the time which is basically the same thing. The businessman's ability to project successfully very often determines his longevity.

Hi Michael,

Thank you.

I predict there will be two packages arriving this coming week.

How is that for predicting the future! :D :D LOL

Glad to hear you are coming to the show. Steak and Shake is on me. LOL

Hi Les,

I enjoy reading and learning as much as you. Thanks for taking the time.

I don't know if the bottom half of the above post is directed at Tai or just in general. That said, I will vouch that Tai Goo has a credibility on stated delivery that is envious in this 'business'. I have never heard anything but praise upon his delivery timing. My own experience (Two knives ordered and sent on or ahead of schedule) bears this out.

Just an FYI for the uninitiated.

Points well taken Les , but we will have to agree to disagree on the predicting the future aspect , my belief will always remain , you nor anybody can make such a loose claim.

hi Kevin,

Thank you.

HI Coop,

I was not referring to Tai in any way, shape or form. I have never bought a knife from Tai.

Thanks for alerting me to a possible misinterpretation by Tai and others. Im glad to hear that he and other makers deliver on time.

Hi John,

I do not make loose claims. I back up my claim every single day with my time, money and expertise.

I have bought millions of dollars worth of custom knives and I have never taken out a loan for my business. That sir is not luck. That is knowing where the business has been and where it is going.

Oh and John, I take it we are good on the Entrepreneur part now. :D

John, your occupation says course developer. What kind of courses do you develop?

Les,
The knives i love have perfectly sculpted guards. Brass.

I Wont be sending you money for knives if you Dont sell what i like. (The "Future") ;)

Hi Peter,

Help you....stop it...you know better than that. Peter your penance for this sin will be to buy me dinner at Peter Luger's in November! :D

David,

No mater what the market...there is always 20% that will either never buy or will utilize a contrarian strategy.

My Market is the 80% that remains.

On the plus side there are thousands of custom knives from the 50', 60's and 70's that feature brass. You should be able to put together quite the collection rather quickly...as you will have little competition for those knives. Don't forget to allot time every two days for polishing! You might want to invest in the "Industrial" size BRASSO! :D

Hell, even when I was commissioned a 2LT...my bars were that new brass that didn't need polishing. Even the Army got rid of brass in the mid 1980's!

LOL

What kind of courses do you develop?

Course Developer for IGT. Basically develop training courses , training guides and technical documentation for the software/hardware/systems we design/engineer and sell.
Used to be in end user training , got tired of the travel , as it left me zero shop/knifemaking and family time.

we are good on the Entrepreneur part now
it's cool.

The prices are in the Ordering section. I have only one custom, a little folder by Alsdorf, very nice too.

I'm not critising makers, just the people who criticise others when they never use the collectables they think are pinnacles of the knifemakers' craft when they are never used. Unless a knife is used, how can anyone learn about it to offer any advice to improve another knife.

By the way, I sold a couple of Randalls last year with brass guards and the buyers didnt seem to mind at all.

Does a Rolex really tell time better than a watch at walmart?

You are criticizing collectors that appreciate and understand a higher level of workmanship, skill, sweat, tears, risk, time, and patience from a maker. They are buying knives that had a huge amount of hours in planning, practice, and execution. And yes these knives do cut and if you have $2000 I'll make you one you can try out.

These collectors are paying big money for these knives and that does give them a right to "critique" the knives they see. And by the way, this is a forum.

Am I a bit sensitive about this, sure. Because you are criticizing people that are helping support and drive the knife world. You're not going to scare off Kevin Jones, but what if a new collector shows up and offers his opinion and then he's told he shouldn't have an opinion because he's never gutted an elk out. He might just leave thinking he's not appreciated.

I usually find opinions like these from people that don't have the ability to make these knives, or the wealth to buy them so instead they throw stones. I'm not putting down makers making user grade knives, or the collectors that collect them. I make them too. But don't come here and throw out sweeping charges that stem from jealousy or ignorance.

You will find a cheap quartz watch from Wal-mart will be much more accurate than a Rolex unless it is the Oysterquartz.

Maybe its a matter of culture but in Britain, the value of ones opinions is not determined by the depth of ones pockets but the skill and knowledge in ones head. Just because someone can spent $2000 on a knife does not make his opinions worth more than someone who spends $200.

Its an online forum open to all. Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it just as long as they remain polite.

Or maybe posting to the c&h forum should be limited only to those who can pass a skill and knowledge litmus test.

Hi John,

Course Developer would be the person that defines the training for "future technology" isn't it.

You and your group are looking into the future and creating manuals and training that will be required by end user.

John, you are part of a group "predicting the future".

You would be amazed at how many people are involved in identifying future needs and developing the technology and manuals for its use. Then again you probably wouldn't be as it seems you have been doing this for a while.

Where are we saying that one who can spend $2000 on a knife opinions are worth more? All opinions are welcome here. You haven't been kicked off because of yours. Yet! ;)
