A reality check for most makers

Maybe its a matter of culture but in Britain, the value of ones opinions is not determined by the depth of ones pockets but the skill and knowledge in ones head. Just because someone can spent $2000 on a knife does not make his opinions worth more than someone who spends $200.

Utter tripe. "Great" Britain is the most elitist country in the world! You are a subject of a monarch! You have a house of LORDS! No offense Brits, you have a rich history and deserve your elitism, IMO, but this poster is grasping...

Shing, I visted your website. You make nice user grade knives. However, based on what you make, how are you are qualified to discuss custom knife collecting? Your knives are clearly intended for a different audience. That is not a slight. Most of us have lots of users. We are people too.

I think people are getting to hung up on the " collecting " aspect...

afterall this subforum is described as " Your place to find information about custom knives. " it doesn't indicate " Your place to find information about collecting custom knives. "

There are customs for everyone from user grade knives , to high end collector pieces to high end user pieces. And right now if you can't find a knife that meets your wants/needs , you aren't looking hard enough.

Even though we may not all agree all the time , merely listening ( in this case reading ) others thoughts and opinions can bring on new aspects and keep us all thinking.

Hi John,

Course Developer would be the person that defines the training for "future technology" isn't it.

You and your group are looking into the future and creating manuals and training that will be required by end user.

John, you are part of a group "predicting the future".

You would be amazed at how many people are involved in identifying future needs and developing the technology and manuals for its use. Then again you probably wouldn't be as it seems you have been doing this for a while.

Les , its not future technology , its now technology in my case. I design after the software/hardware is developed and at least in beta format. It's a today world kind of thing.

While I have had to design on vapor ware , I totally hate it , the only thing that could be worse than trying to predict the stock market is trying to figure out what a developer is going to do with a product. ;)

I am starting to understand what you are getting at to a degree but cant say I 100% agree. Fair enough ? :)

I don't think I have used a custom knife at all which is the reason I never offer an opinion on custom knives.

My knives are certainly users and thats the way I like it. There are a few collectors I know of and I do chide them a little if I see one of my knives they have bought looks unused after a few months.

Britain is a very elitist country just like most countries really. Some people will be swayed by those that occupy a higher social plane or seem to have a lot of money but that is their outlook. Although in Britain, money can't buy you social status.

Hi Shing,

If you have never used custom knives, (using your logic) then much like the "Snob" collectors who do nothing but cut "thin air" with their custom knives. Your opinion is at best as good as those you have an issue with.

Am I missing something here?

The difference is I offer no opinion on knives I never used, they do although I would not call people who spend a relatively large amount of money a snob.

Mr. Shing,

Allow me to introduce you to your straw man:

Maybe its a matter of culture but in Britain, the value of ones opinions is not determined by the depth of ones pockets but the skill and knowledge in ones head. Just because someone can spent $2000 on a knife does not make his opinions worth more than someone who spends $200.

Near as I can see, nobody - on either side of the pond - was advancing the absurd proposition that someone who spends $2k on a knife is possessed of a more valuable opinion than one who spends less.

Anthony,
What does any of this have to do with British, or American? ..i think you s-t-r-etch too far, Sir. You can make the same argument for race, creed, religion, profession.. There are no true indicators for one's subjective taste,..

I do see a recurring misconception about "art" and necessary usefulness in knives.

Les,
You should demand a salary here- call it a Forum consulting fee.. You are GOOD! :)

Good question, but better directed at Shing, who raised the issue with his "Maybe its a matter of culture but in Britain...." comment.

Roger

Roger,
Good point! Shing draws the attention to it,.. as if an issue "culture". . My bad..

slevin, I don't think I understood anything in that post of yours other than a huge dislike for Great Britain. What in the world does that have to do with the topic of this thread?

Nothing whatsoever. That was in exceedingly poor taste.

I feel my limited grasp of reality slipping.

Seriously, have the body snatchers invaded earth, yet again?
