A Sad day at Buck Knives

I still shop for the "Made in USA" stamp. I hope you do too!
I will always shop USA made goods first and I am willing to pay more. At some point price does become an issue. So far it hasn't as it pertains to my knife purchases. If it does I will simply stop buying. I think I got enough to last awhile. :D

...Goosemeister I got the same thing you did but I have a fear of Damascas...LOL...so I got the ol' S30V that I'm more familiar with and I added rivets for appearance sake...Looking forward to see how the ram's horn looks with the NS riveted frame...:)

SHEET! I was wrasslin' back and forth over the rivets! Always liked them...but this time I went nekid. We'll have to compare.

Ask him what?
He did us a favor by doing that article. Certainly more info than I got from anyone at Buck.

But DAVE!!!!

The important thing is..........is he going to send me a check for using my writing?????

I could get over my trauma if I got a little something......

:D

I'm gonna need it now........just ordered:

1 Damasque/plain buff/nickel and nickel pins.

1 154CM/Koa/nickel and nickel pins.

So, as long as you seem to be building a friendship with this guy.....maybe you could tell him my eloquent words are copyrighted and he should send me an equitable sum to cover my rightful payment as a wordcrafter.

We KNOW his article really didn't start to POP until it hit the quote from me.

Shore do appreciate ur help!

;)

I spoke to the reporter as well and told him about the BCCI gig. I told him my name is Harry Keister.

It's that whole freedom of the press gig I guess...anything you type on a forum is public unless you copyright it...just like a reporting taking a pic of a public street scene is diff than a private pic.

Prayers to all the families affected by the lay offs and wishing a speedy recovery to Buck and all. We have just ordered five buck knives and two saws, my friends and family have gotten used to me giving Buck’s at all gift exchanges and this will continue. The older I get the more important things like Buck Knives, BCCI and this forum mean to me. It was a sad day when Schrade closed and I never want to see this happen to Buck. And I second jb4570 idea on "A knife a month is all we ask"!!!

Well said, Stockdog, my feelings exactly.

This is only my second post on this site so bear with me here. First of all I know how it feels to lose a good job so my sympathy goes out to these people and all the others I have seen get laidoff. I was a Buck employee at the El Cajon factory from 1989-1999 and was laid off in Jan. 1999 when things started getting bad. I was upset at the time but it was good for me as it caused me to rethink life and get up off my butt and work really hard at finding a new career. I am doing great now but I do miss my old friends from the factory. I have been on many hunting trips with Joe Houser and CJ Buck shooting doves in the imperial valley, and I did some great fishing with Joe. We even enjoyed a few very hard played racquetball games. And I have to tell you guys, that Joe and CJ Buck are top notch people and are greatly miss here in San Diego, but life goes on. Do I blame anybody? Hell no. You have to do what you have to do in this town to survive, and after living here for 40yrs. I know how hard it is. My prayers go out to the Buck family and I hope all is well and you guys get through this without too much trouble.

Outcast.

Why do you call yourself "outcast?"

And welcome. Got a lot of knives stashed?

Watch out for the guys here.......they'll have your knives in a blink of an eye and leave with nothing but a whole bunch of money.

Who needs that?

:D

I choose the name Outcast, because the layoff happened so quickly, that I filled out my paperwork and was out the door in under 45mins. It felt like I was *cast out* of the factory. We were not even allowed to talk to anybody, or say goodbye to friends, out the door we all went.

As far as my stash, I sold most of my custom stuff right after I lost my job just to survive. The guys in the custom shop were my friends and hunting buddies, Leroy Remer, Bob Miller, Jaun, Wilde Bill Cody. Such incredible craftsman everyone of them. I wish I still had those knives. Ya see, I worked in the Buck Knives warehouse, so I probably touched parts of every model made during those 10yrs. so I saw plenty of knives at work, and didn't collect that many. The warehouse was responsible for delivering all the Bayonets to *Fragile handle with care* to be packaged and sent to the Military. There were many a day that I left the dock ( I drove the company bobtail) with 8 pallets filled 6 feet high with bayonets. I don't remember how many it actually was, but it was a lot. I even went to phrobis when we lost the contract and brought back all the tooling and a mess of their modular knives, I don't remember what they were called but I have seen a few for sale over the years and they command a high price. There we boxes and boxes of parts for those things, and lots of bayonet parts. It was a sad day when we lost that contract. It is so hard to put 10yrs. worth of memories here, but it was a fantastic ride and I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks Buck Knives for all the memories.
Is there any other employes for that time period on this message board?

Outcast.

So you're saying your hunting buddies shunned you after you were laid off?

They couldn't have been very good buddies if they never contacted you after you were laid off.

I hope that I didn't make it sound that way, but it was a HUGE change in my life and I had to scramble to find work. If I remember correctly, I was so busy trying to find a job and or making ends meet, that I lost contact with most of them. I even stopped hunting for a period of time simply because I could not afford it, and everybody just did there own thing. I still see Leroy and Art Acuna at the gun shows from time to time and I talk to one of the tool and die makers I knew, but thats about it. I thought this might be a place where I could hook up with some old friends.

Outcast.

...Stick around outcast...I'm sure you'll run into folks you knew. I also know how you felt when you were laid off...Many folks who haven't lost a job don't know those feelings. When I got the "ax" years ago I also left a lot of great friends that were fishing, hunting, womanizin'...:o... and drinking buddies. The problem is you feel so bad about losing your job that you can't bring yourself to drive past the old factory let alone keep in touch with friends you know are still working there. Welcome to a really close bunch of Buck appreciators. You'll fit in well I'm sure...:):thumbup:

It may be a bit late but my sympathy goes out to all those who got laid off.
Best wishes to all and I hope they find viable employment again soon.
Scary stuff.
:grumpy:

Well, Outcast......you got some wise words from DarrylS on the subject.

I can see how the loss of contact could happen in that situation. Hope you do connect with some old friends here.

And DAVE.....Rocinante is either a horse or a pickup with a camper......either way it doesn't make much sense.

:D
