A Sad day at Buck Knives

Yep, I liked the one about the sign asking for food or something cuz "my husband works at Buck". Seems like some ticked off folks. Bitch about Calif but happy to have the tax revenue until something bad happens then it's all because of the Californians. Employment is a commodity...if people work for slave labor wages, as comments suggest, then shame on them...employers pay what the market has...that is why my frickin' job is going to India. But ya don't see me bashing. I'll get another job...keep myself trained and educated...your skills are a commodity and are just that, "yours". We're all whores.

Oh, sorry Larry...I can't write in this thread anymore...someone named "Pack Rat" doesn't want it cluttered ;)

Good comments have a place in any thread....

Was just a suggestion...

Sorry about your job....that sux...:(

Now quit reading this forum and go get my custom order expedited :p:thumbup::D:);)

Yes, indeedy, Joe, thank you! I think the name that is used for people such as yourself is "Fixer." After all the dust settles, and the till is once again full from all those custom shop orders, you need to ask the mountain for a raise!! :)

...If any of you have already ordered...the 15% discount will be deducted after the knives are ready to ship...This is per Pete Mason at Buck...Yes...They did already hit my credit card for the funds...Now let's see how many orders we can get in there guys...:p:thumbup:

Just another tricky day. I'm glad things are heading in the right direction again, I had faith that it would.
I'll expedite your order just as soon as I finish my Therapy knife....;)

You know guys, in all our current ectasy over the reduction in custom shop prices, let us not forget that a number of people lost their positions during this whole ordeal, so let's keep this all in perspective. It's been a long week!!

...I was thinking just that Sue...I made an inadvertent comment to Pete Mason when I called to mention the 15% deduction on the custom I ordered when I said good bye. I said I hope they have a nice weekend and that the number of new custom orders they get from this ordeal gets a few folks back to work...I didn't really wait for a comment as I bid my tongue and hung up...Prayers for all those folks wouldn't hurt...:(

Most interesting were the comments left on the newspaper site. From actual Post Falls residents and employees. If Buck Knives is a family, I am glad it ain't mine.

Gentlemen
I am sitting here in my hotel room in Atlanta at the blade show reading this thread for the first time.

It was a sad day but a neccessary step as we size ourselves for an economy that may remain sluggish even while we hope it does not.

My heart goes out to the 23 folks we let go as well and I agree with all the well wishes expressed in this thread.

Sir,

You have to do what you must to stay in buisness, and I as well as the rest of those here wish that too. Being a Buck user for 41 years, I hope that Buck survives this period in our economy, because the cutlery world without Buck, would be a little colder place. Like some others here, there are three generations of my family who grew up with you and your family's products. Go and do what you have to, to survive, even though it may well be a painfull thing. I wish you well no matter what happens, and I'm gratefull to the Buck family for making the wonderfull knives I've used from one end of the earth to the other.

God bless.

Carl.

Hi CJB,

That sad day continues to weigh heavy on my heart....my prayers are with all involved...these types of decisions are hard on both sides of the issue. Thanks for responding.

The current state of the economy is on shaky ground....gas, food, and every other commodity is rising in cost rapidly. Let us know if their is anything we can do to help.....maybe take the slogan from Bluedimond for awhile...."A knife a month is all we ask"!!!

PS: I look forward to a little info on the show in the news letter:thumbup:

I was just messing w/ you about the posting in this thread Larry :)
Thanks for the comments regarding the job. It is what it is...but I will say that this off-shore stuff is crap (wonder how many Chinese workers were let go).

And so it is true Tin Sue; still sad about what is going on w/ those laid off at Buck and elsewhere in this country of a "chicken in every pot".

So far as the custom pricing, yep, like $3 gas seems like a deal now. I paid $4.73 a gallon yesterday  But I am impressed that Buck addressed the overly inflated numbers for whatever reason.

Doc D., I wouldn't worry so much about your comments. Didn't seem wrong to me. Like at a funeral...ya never know what the right thing is to say but the spirit in what you say is from the heart.

BTW, D., what custom did you order? :)

My first "real knife" was a Buck.

Knife making is a tough business. The competitive pressure from foreign manufacturers is immense. Every year it becomes harder and harder to justify passing on a less expensive knife made overseas. Compared to many years ago, how many knives do you see on store shelves today that say "Made in the USA"?

We have seen too many US knife companies go away. I hope Buck can weather this storm and will be able to recall a large number of those let go.

I still shop for the "Made in USA" stamp. I hope you do too!

BTW, D., what custom did you order? :)

...Goosemeister I got the same thing you did but I have a fear of Damascas...LOL...so I got the ol' S30V that I'm more familiar with and I added rivets for appearance sake...Looking forward to see how the ram's horn looks with the NS riveted frame...:)
