Meticulously holding the lockbar off of the blade-tang for each and every closure is insane.

No knife is that fragile.

I can't understand why that method of closure is even being discussed.

Wow really? it's not like its a hard thing to do. Just move the lockbar out of the way until the blade is closed enough to where the detent ball on the lockbar is touching the side of the blade.

I know...somehow I manage it every single time.
Lots of other people don't seem capable of it though, which is yet another reason only I get to use my knives.

I completely move the lock bar out of the way every single time. I didn't know there were people who didn't....

I don't do it because I'm worried about wear. I do it because I hate the noise the blade tang makes as you scrape it across the lock bar.

I agree about the scraping. Every time I hear it I cringe. I even told tuff thumbs in one of his vids I hate the way he closes a knife.

If anyone wants to know what we are talking about go watch either one of his vids. Also Neptune knives does the same thing.

Although in reference to wolf5391's Sebenza or any other claim involving a "used" or "second-hand" blade, the life-long warranty the original owner enjoyed becomes null-and-void with any subsequent owner. Is this the legal basis for why CRK has refused to repair these knives free of charge?

First, let me say that I don't own any CRK's but I have read all of the posts in this thread with interest. I am not sure if this is the right place to ask but are all knife manufacturer's warranties (or guarantees according to the wording on the CRK site) like this? I am under the impression that companies like Benchmade, Spyderco, Kershaw/ZT don't have "limited to the original owner" language. Who knows? I could be wrong. That being said, If I were to spend the amount of money it would take me get a sebenza, I would expect the best warranty not one limited to the original owner. I understand BM, Spyderco, ZT being a little picky when we are spending $100-$200 on their products not $400-$500 ++ like on a CRK. Who knows, maybe I am ignorant to the whole matter.

Why is it insane to properly close a knife? It is downright stupid not to.

How do you suggest one closes a frame lock?

Haha yep Neptard did it on each and every knife he closed. :D

Benchmade: " Benchmade Knife Company, Inc. warrants to the original owner" http://www.benchmade.com/services/warranty.aspx

Spyderco: No mention of warranty being limited to original owner (doesn't even use the word owner) http://www.spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/index.php?item=10

Kershaw/ZT/KAI: "products are guaranteed for the lifetime of the original owner" http://www.kershawknives.com/warranty.php

so it appears pretty standard, and keep in mind CRK has said they don't automatically disqualify a knife from warranty work. I imagine it's just to cover them in these situations, where they see the damage as abuse from a previous owner. It definitely isn't ideal, but I bet in the decades they've been making knives, they've seen a ton of abused ones in for warranty work and were told, "I don't know why it's like that. I didn't abuse it, but I bought it used."

-------

On the not moving the lock bar fully out of the way topic, I did it at most a couple to a handful of times. It wasn't intentional and as I said was from being scared to overextend the lock bar, as that was a topic that had come up a number of times in the forum, and being that it was my first brand new CRK, I didn't want to risk messing it up that way (ironic if that is the cause--that actions resulting from fear over harming it is what harmed it). I imagine that once it happens any damage done will be hit by regular openings so will accelerate that particular wear, since the lock bar is repeatedly hitting the dents it caused (if it causes it--still not convinced that's the culprit).

The only company I know that has a truly no questions asked, fully transferable, warranty is Bark River.

They don't make Folders yet, but they're working on them.

I've sent a Sebenza in for warranty work (no detent) and they asked where I bought it and if I bought it new. I said used and that was it. Sent the knife in and they fixed it.

I somehow doubt that closing the knife is the major culprit to everyone's lock face woes. Unless you're the hulk and have an incredibly strong index finger, I can't see people putting enough pressure on the back of the blade to cause much if any deformation on the lock face.

How do you suggest one closes a frame lock?

Push on the spine of the blade while unlocking the lockbar until the blade-tang slips off the lockface.
Continue putting pressure against the spine until fully closed.

There's no wrong way to close a knife. (Within reason.)
If a knife needs special instructions to close it, so that it will not wear improperly, it is a poorly made knife.
The Sebenza is not a poorly made knife.

Special techniques for closing the Sebenza should not even be discussed.

I have never had any gun or knife company, CRK included, ask whether I was the original owner before performing free warranty service.

Is the complaint that there is wear on the lockface or that there is blade play? The discussion appears to center on the perception the lock faces are showing wear - but not necessarily that blade play is present. Admittedly, I have not read every post. My casual monitering of this thread gives me in the impression that a coupel of people complained of blade play and a larger discussion of lock face wear ensued. Who here is actually experiencing blade play? I ask becasue I assume that no one really cares what their lock face looks like so long as the lock up remains tight.

I think the 'bigger picture' you're looking for it that people's lock faces show wear, similar to those that are experiencing blade play/rock lock; Chris attributes this to abuse and abuse alone. Thus if/when these people's knives develop any play, they'll be the question as to whether or not Chris will honor their warranty or turn them away on claims of abuse even if the knife hasn't been.

That's where I'm at with it. Truth be told until this thread I never paid much attention to the lockface. I don't wrist flick, I don't baton, I don't use my knife to hammer nails or pry open doors. I just cut with it.

This subject popped up and now I'm breaking my knife down JUST to look at the lockbar. I have a small spot formed, but aside from that the knife is just like new. No play, no issues.
