A Spyderco Pikal?

Parallax, one of the things I like about names like "Pickle knife", "Reverse Rescue", "R2", are the fact that they are not at all evocative of combatives. Stinging and recoiling are things that bees and snakes do, and that's not quite the evocation I was hoping for :) I may be the only one hung up on things like this, but I'd prefer the name of our purpose-designed pickle knife to be more innocuous, or technical-sounding.

Good point, Joe. I had that in my mind too before I suggested the names, but maybe I underestimated the knowledge base of the average DA or LEO where it concerns FMA applications. I can see where Nathan Rodger was getting at - the situation he described could land a user in quite a "pickle" :D ...

IMHO if we look at it from that perspective, the Southern Comfort or the Reverse Rescue are excellent names as they would have no reference whatsoever to anything...objectionable. The 'pickle' reference however would sound a lot like "pikal", and could still be close enough to FMNA that a clever DA coulfd stillmake trouble? Just a thought...

I just finished reading all 14 pages of this thread and I want to congratulate everyone who participated especially Sal. I NEVER thought that I would see a company that was that responsive or customers who were willing to put aside petty differences to see a product developed. If anyone ever said that a major company could make a knife could go from idea to working model in two months i would have called them crazy. Once again congratulations.

I really like "Pickle Knife" (and I'll call mine that regardless, to commemerate the occasion). I also really like "Southern Comfort", in honor of its first incarnation (carrying mine right now).

Keep up the good work, guys.

Sal, one more thought: do you think you could make a first run, especially for forumgoers, maybe as a package deal with trainers? I don't think there would be any problem selling it out.

For the record, Pickle Knife is my fave name, too, though I can't imagine the marketing folks at Spyderco appreciate the joke :)

I decided to put 3 seconds of thought into this, and if Pickle Knife isn't the winning name, my entry is: The Adept. "Adept" kind of ties in with "Disciple", and since this is kinda sorta a folding Disciple, it seems to fit. In its noun form, it means "A highly skilled person."

Joe,
Yep -The Adept is a very cool & well suited choice :D thanks for taking the 3 seconds to think.

My choices in order of preference:

- The Pickle Knife ( :D )
- Southern Comfort
- The Adept

I might try and take 3 seconds myself...

Cheers,
Nathan.

The Adept is also a great name!

But...what about the Apostle?

Apostle:
1. One who pioneers an important reform movement, cause, or belief: an apostle of conservation.
2. A passionate adherent; a strong supporter.

OK, how about this name as one of (many) alternatives:-

The Spyderco "Pakar".

In the Malay language, "pakar" means "adept" or "expert". It sounds a little like "Pakal" too.

I like the Reverse Rescue, or Draw knife idea's. I never liked names that require a dictionary, or ability to speak foreign languages to understand:-)This knife will appeal to Cops and Rescue folks in a big way because of its inherint utility and defensive capabilities.
From cutting someone out of a seat belt, to fending off a gun grab this knife WILL do what needs to be done without screaming "Fighting Knife" or being Politically Incorrect.
I just recieved my proto mock up, and I am very impressed with what Sal & Co. have done folding a Disciple. Snarc and I had some discussion, and I brought up a few slight refinements that we think would make it even better.
I will be doing some mods on it, and be getting it back to Sal ASAP.

Reverse Rescue - still has a nice ring to it. It will also allow this design to lie behind the mask of the "Rescue" range. It will function in a similar manner to a certain extent, but it obvioulsy has some unique attributes that allow it to "rescue" the user out of harms way...

I agree on the naming convention that we need to follow. It can't really draw unnecessary martial or violent links.

My fav's in no particular order:

Reverse Rescuse or R2
The Adept
The Southern Comfort
The Pickle Knife

Cheers,
Nathan.

I, for one, will feel like Luke Skywalker with an 'R2' by my side!!!

...and that ain't a bad thing...being a Pikal Jedi!!!!! :D

PS - I didn't think that it was actually going to BE a folding Disciple, I just thought that was 'talk' and guessing by the peanut gallery. I can't think of a better backup to my Custom Disciple than a folding Disciple!!!!! This is exciting!!!

I don't think anyone confirmed it would be a folding Disciple. I think there were hints that they wanted to start from the Disciple and go from there -- that what I'd do. I'm hoping for at least a few changes, most importantly, the ability to use the knife in regular forward grip for utility use, when required (i.e., less special purpose handle). But of course, now I've brought us back to the first page of a zillion-response thread!

What about a mod of one of the suggestions; just "Reverse" ?

As a "Reverse" draw knife, other markets are also available such as horticulture, grafting, florists, etc.

Trace, looking forward to your suggestions. Sooner is better than later. We're going to try to fit a lock to it in the next couple of weeks.

I was mostly going by what Trace said above, though I realize that we're not talking about simply folding a Disciple in half. But, now I'm kinda' picturing a Folding Disciple in about the same way that the Yojimbo's a Folding Ronin. It's not simply a Ronin in half, but there remain some obvious and huge similarities.

Whatever, I'm certain that whatever it is (or will be) will be superb!!!

Riding on what Mr Glesser mentioned, I take it to mean that a one word name is preferable to a 2 word name such as Reverse Rescue or Southern Comfort?

If so, an alternative to "Reverse" could be "Verso". "Verso" is a synonym for "reverse" and means the other side as in the other side of the coin. So it could be a clever allusion to the fact thatt he edge is on the "other side", and the reference to the other side of the coin can also be a clever reference to that adage as well. Finally as I understand it under trademark law, "Reverse" may be a little too descriptive in relatin to the nature of the knife to enable Spyderco to claim exclusive rights to the name?

"Spyderco Verso" has a certain catch to it, no? :D

Well Joe... I suppose that is a suggestion isn't it? Hmmm... ummm thanks for keeping on the ball!

LOL

Cheers,
Nathan

I'm almost certainly _not_ going to buy one of these, so take my suggestion with a grain of salt...

But I really like "verso". Partly because it sounds nifty, but mostly because it sounds friendly and non-threatening. I'd expect the "Verso" to be a new mid-end rollerball pen, or a PalmPilot accessory. It just sounds like the way companies name "useful, versatile modern every-day tools".

I also think it's _awesome_ to see Spyderco not only working so enthusiastically with the ELUs, but also putting so much thought into a "practical" name for the knife. You guys in Golden are really amazing sometimes. :D
