A Spyderco Pikal?

I know I originally pitched Snark, but I REALLY like "Reversal" of all the other suggestions.

Says it all.

Hello All,

Looking at all the contributions and the interest for this design...............

Maybe the "knife" should be called THE FORUM ;)

This has been an awesome thread, I have been lurking here for awhile and reading this one. Response from Spyderco has been great, the ideas have been great and I can't wait to get one of these. Pickle for a name and forest greeen g10 get my vote.

spyderco rocks!

I'm with the majority in that the name of the piece shouldn't be overly provocative. Using a name which is descriptive without being aggresive leads one to appreciate the derivations of "Reverse", ie. "Reversal" and "Verso". However, because most aficionados of all products Spyder tend to shorten the name of many of the multi-syllabic pieces (eg. "Military" becomes "Mili", "Civilian" becomes "Civ", etc.), how about naming the pikal folder "Rev".

"Rev" connotes the aspects of "reverse", but because it is fairly abiguous leaves its meaning open to interpretation. "Rev", afterall, is what an engine does to produce power. It also is short for "Reverend". You get the point.

I'm with the other forum members who deeply appreciate the manner in which Sal & Co. involves the ELU in the shaping of current and future production lines.

I posted elsewhere that something along the of "Pikal" would be fie for me. Name following function in a sort, along the lines of the Gunting.

In the end what ever as I'll have one regardless.

I dont know if this has been used or mentioned already.. But I was thinking "Double Duty" would be a cool name... It denotes its dual role as a rescue/utility blade as well as its offensive/defensive capabilities, without being UN-PC, Just a thought..

Reversal, Rev and even Verso are pretty cool....

Hey Trace,
I like the "Double Duty" name, very fitting for the task. Just a query, would you think it sounds a bit too "Cop"? I dunno - still very PC of course, which is why I like it - I mean we can do without "Flaying Machine" and the others ;) just a thought for discussion??

Cheers,
Nathan.

I'd like to mention that Trace and Snarc have been extremely helpful in the development of the design. They have the knowledge, passion......and they put up with me ;) .

As much as I like the previously mentioned "flaying machine" or perhaps the flesh eater, I understand why they would not be politic. Based on Mr. Glesser's last post how about the Snarkaldi or the Rensnarkdi;-)>

Some "edge-u-cation" ;)

As a responsible manufacturer, We make sure our knives are safe for the user (refined ergonomics for control, reliable strong locks, sufficient blade strength in material & grind, etc.).

It is also our responsibility to name our knives with names that do not cause our customers harm. If, for whatever stroke of bad luck might befall you, that you end up in legal trouble for the possession of a knife, a non violent, non threatening name will go in your favor.

"Mr. Doe here, has in his possession a knife that is named "the widowmaker". Obviously designed and built with the intention of killing men"., etc, etc.

To be wise is always best.

In addition to study of the "MBC art form" of Pikal, a "draw knife" (knife designed to be used in a pull cut safely & comfortably) has legitimate function in areas where a pull cut needs to be safe. Such as; horticulture, grafting plants, processing produce, wood carving, etc. All areas where a full flat grind on a piece of S30V would be appreciated.

Since the knife looks "backards", something with reference to that concept is easily understandable without mentioning function. If function is to be part of the name, then the funtion needs to be carefully looked at. Easy to remember.

Reverse, REV, pull, puller, draw, the verso or similar? You keep sounding them out, we'll write 'em down and when we get closer to a piece, we'll look at the list closely.

Something like "pickle" requires explanation. It's a fun "in-house" project name but wouldn't work for an ad.

I like "Draw Knife." If a prosecutor looks it up, he will see the definition of a tool.

Along the same lines as "Verso", I would suggest that Spyrderco could look at other available synonyms for "reverse" which carry the meaning of backwards (not in the defeat sense but in the sense of the other side) such as "Inverter" or "Contra".

Synonyms which are too common or obvious should oprobably be avoided so that the term is not too descriptive of the product - as that would invalidate it as a trademark. Hence "Reverse" and "Draw" would describe exactly the edge and the way in whicht he knife is to be deployed - hence it may attract problems in the trademark arena.

So Trace & Sal... are we seeing hints at a close timeline to proto?? ;) Or at least some blade length hints?? (I know its close-ish to the Discilple)

Cheers,
Nathan

Ah sh*t Sal you're hardly someone who has to be "put" up with at all. It's been real smooth. :)

I really like all the suggestions implying "reverse" something or another.

Hmmm, I like the sound of the Spyderco Draw.

I think contra should be saved for when Spyderco produces its first reverse grip specific folding machete.
