A Spyderco Pikal?

Some "edge-u-cation" ;)

As a responsible manufacturer, We make sure our knives are safe for the user (refined ergonomics for control, reliable strong locks, sufficient blade strength in material & grind, etc.).

It is also our responsibility to name our knives with names that do not cause our customers harm. If, for whatever stroke of bad luck might befall you, that you end up in legal trouble for the possession of a knife, a non violent, non threatening name will go in your favor.

"Mr. Doe here, has in his possession a knife that is named "the widowmaker". Obviously designed and built with the intention of killing men"., etc, etc.

To be wise is always best.

In addition to study of the "MBC art form" of Pikal, a "draw knife" (knife designed to be used in a pull cut safely & comfortably) has legitimate function in areas where a pull cut needs to be safe. Such as; horticulture, grafting plants, processing produce, wood carving, etc. All areas where a full flat grind on a piece of S30V would be appreciated.

Since the knife looks "backards", something with reference to that concept is easily understandable without mentioning function. If function is to be part of the name, then the funtion needs to be carefully looked at. Easy to remember.

Reverse, REV, pull, puller, draw, the verso or similar? You keep sounding them out, we'll write 'em down and when we get closer to a piece, we'll look at the list closely.

Something like "pickle" requires explanation. It's a fun "in-house" project name but wouldn't work for an ad.

Re the Recoil & the pickle, see Sal's earlier comments in this thread.

Really, what's with letting this sink to the forums depths? This is one of the bigger projects I have seen on this forum. If we don't show interest Sal might think we really don't want it and cancel production!

;)

What do u mean? That it won't go into poduction? Hey i skipped the childrens christmass giftst this year to keep the money available! Common, those tears where hard to deal with but i found the strenght to resist by the tought of the pikal. And my wife filed for a divorce because she refused to change her firstname to "pikal", we are trying to change our last name to Spyderco. Luckely my three daugters are underaged so they can't file a complaint. Can anyone think about three first names for a female that will go with Spyderco as their last name?

Thank u

Guys I dont think there is anything to worry about.. Maybe a bump in the road, but still should be rolling along fine.. ;)

Trace.

Bless you, Mr. Rinaldi, and everyone in your house.

I know that details are confidential, but can you tell us if Mr. Bos is involved in this exciting project? I understand that he may be preoccupied with the Buck move to Idaho, but your work with him on the ShivWorks blades was so fruitful, I had the hope that he might be involved on this one as well.

I just love to see his logo anywhere.

We trust you mean they're rollin' along Rawhide style:

Move 'em on, head 'em up,
Head 'em up, move 'em out,
Move 'em on, head 'em out Rawhide!
Set 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, let 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in Rawhide

and that you didn't mean rolling along Old Man River style:

Old man river, that old man river,
He don’t say nothin’, but he must know somethin’
That old man river, he just keeps rolling along.

:D ;)

We're finishing up the latest prototype today. I'll have it at the SHOT show.

Trace, Snarc, do you plan to be at SHOT? I'll need your comments and approval on the proto.

Lost Jag: While I would love to have Paul Bos involved, thats up to Sal, and I am sure Spyderco is very well capable of doing a good job on the HT..

Or during SHOT pics, even.

If I start reading reports from people saying "Yeah, Sal let me hold it, but I couldn't take any pics," I swear I'm gonna gnaw my arm off.

Yeh! What he said!

Some mini vids of the proto opening and closing would be cool.

Sal showing off some moves would be even better.

Bad enough I've been after the Szabofly since Laci told me it was going to be a go back in December of '03 now I'm holding my breath for the Pikal knife too. I can't freaking wait.

Umm A picture'd be nice for those of us who are waiting ever so paitently. :D <----- 'ats my innocent don't I deserve a picture smile.

Well humbug! Where are all the knife photos guys and gals? Does Sal not want any taken?

no picture of any proto can be taken at knife shows, it's not allowed. patent thing... :)

Then why did I see a picture of an ATR in this forum many, many months before one was released?

Isn't the whole point of a trade show to show people what's coming and to generate interest from potential customers?

Yes, but there's a fine line, more difficult that ever to walk in the internet era, between generating interest and giving the knock-off artists something to work with before your product even hits the streets. There's also less benefit, and often a negative result, when folks get too excited too early. The excitement tends to wear off before the product hits the dealers shelves. In advertising, as in many other things, timing is everything.

This is pure speculation on my part, but perhaps a photo of the ATR had been sent out to large dealers. In the past those dealers would have used that photo to illustrate their own printed catalogs, which then would not have been sent out to customers until after the intended release date of the knife. Instead, one or more of those dealers, having joined the ranks of e-tailing, used the photo on their website, where of course it got immediate exposure to the public. If you couple a situatiion like that with an unexpected production glitch, pictures wind up getting posted long before the release.

Heck, a production glitch alone could account for it. Kind of recall staying up late on Halloween '03 because the release of the Spyderfly was "imminent" and official pictures were getting posted. Pics went up, but was "a while" before first one actually shipped. Can't say for sure if it hurt sales, since you can't quantify a negative, but it sure caused a lot of grumbling on the forum.

All that said, I also do believe that it is only the "concept knives", those where there is some question whether they will ever be made, that are completely "off limits" to photography. Members of the knife industry press and selected others "may" be allowed to photograph prototypes, but probably only under an NDA type arrangement where they agree not to publish them unless and until permission is given. That's strictly a guess, based on the reality of a different industry and a different era.

My dirty-rotten-mean side compells me to add in closing that I saw the pikal knife at the NYCKS in November and Sal let me hold it, but I couldn't take any pics. :D

I think it's more a matter of Spyderco policy than anything else.

All that aside, forget the picture. Someone must have seen this thing in Vegas. One of you slackers needs to describe it to us!
