Photos A Walk in Nature

Pawpaws!
They grow all up and down the banks of the Potomac, above the falls anyway. They are delicious, but you have to pick them when they are perfectly ripe, or almost so - they don’t ripen well off the tree. They have a strong, sweet, almost floral aroma.

That what I like about Bladeforums, it's a place where you learn more than just knives. Thank you very much for taken the time to answer in such great detail J Just Tom. I heard about Pawpaws, but had no idea what they were. Now I do. Thank you again.

Just over 10 relaxing miles along the canal this morning - from mile 22.8 at Seneca to mile 28 and back

The pawpaws are in season once again !!!
I’ve not yet had the opportunity to try one.
We have them in Ontario from what I read.
I just need to find them 😊

Solo trip this weekend aboard my Serena ⛵

Walking around one island I saw a variety of very big/tall and likely very old trees.

Hickory, maple, oak, pine, walnut etc

Freshly fallen is how I was taught. My dog loved them.

Last night I went back to Leek Island ( also known as Thwartway Island ) to overnight on the same little cove/sandy beach from where I took the pics and video in my previous post.

The island is uninhabited and belongs to Parks Canada. The forest is thick and tall.
While going for a little walk on a trail I came upon the ruins of a very old building sitting a little off to the side of the trail in the bush.

We had seen it last year with my wife so now it peaked my curiosity and I searched online, right there on my phone as to the origin of this structure.

I was fascinated by what I found.
I encourage anyone interested in WWI to read the following article.

Seeking Leek Island: A Place of Healing

The island was the site of a military hospital during World War One.
At the time, the island belonged to the Kips, an affluent couple from the United States.

When the war began " Mrs. Kip offered “to entertain from forty to sixty [Canadian] soldiers at a time at Leek Island… [and]…to bear the entire expense herself and to conform to the highest requirements of the Military Hospitals Commission in regard to the treatment of the patients.”

"The National Library of Medicine recently acquired a rare scrapbook kept by someone during the summer of 1918, while they were living in Leek Island. Within this scrapbook is an abundance of beautiful, surprisingly pristine, black and white photos of the soldiers, of the nurses, and of the land. The images themselves are enough to draw anyone’s attention. However, it is the captions beneath these photos, handwritten in white ink, that give us a unique, unfiltered glimpse into the day to day life of the people in Leek."

I reflected on the lives of these men of long ago and their sacrifice and suffering that brought them to this island for healing and rest.
If these old walls could speak ...

Hi All - Haven’t posted for a long while. Has been a busy summer but at last I joined my siblings for a get together in nearby New Hampshire Franconia Notch. We got to spend some good time together while enjoying being out and about and taking in the beauty of Autumn Leaves amidst the back drop of the White Mountains. This of course included a few day hikes - to THE FLUME GORGE and to CANNON MOUNTAIN for ride on the Aerial Tramway.

Here I share a bit (just a few photos) of the walkabouts ~

FROM THE FLUME GORGE ~ What glaciers and running water will do through granite and basalt over eons ~

Has been a dry summer so not as dramatic by way of the water flowing as it can be but more chance to observe the spectacular geology.

At least a bit of waterfall ~

Some pretty impressive glacial erratics strewn about ~

AND this - my surprise to see a GARGOYLE on the side wall of the Flume. I wonder how many people actually notice this very cool natural creation ~

OH - and a Autumn Leaves view ~

CANNON MOUNTAIN ~

A view from higher up. The fall colors were rather muted this year . The dry summer and warm early autumn seems to have melted the CRAYOLA effect off the trees. Was still quite spectacular.

AND - FINALLY the requisite knife photo 😍

LE POCKET on La Montagne ~

Happy Day - you all! Get out in the woods.
