Photos A Walk in Nature

It seems ages ago that fall has ended, yet it was just a moon ago or so. Winter has arrived, with all its splendors.

Beautiful images Tom. And just what model Victorinox might that be?

Oh my... is it that time of year already? Spectacular scenery.

I tend to get distracted by minutiae when outdoors.

A very steep grade walking path down by the river. It is one of my favorite local places to visit. It seems not many are willing to address the uphill.

Newest arrival, still needing cleaned up. 1985-86 Victorinox Huntsman - Grooved corkscrew and no hook. This thing is nearly new, but I'll not be ashamed to drag it along on the trail and use it.

I took the Huntsman (one of three that I have) for a walk in nature through the local cemetery last Sunday.

This one looks to be a 1992-2005 issue.

...and spotted a pair of Bucks while out there.

Bucklite 442 - 1998 & Bucklite 444 - 1999

The lock doesn't lock up on the 444. I was going to send it in for warranty repair, but am very doubtful they would be able to repair it. And since it hasn't been offered in 20+ years, I'm sure they would likely just replace it with a new knife. I don't want a new knife just for the sake of having a new knife in my possession. Heck, it walks, it talks, and it seems to stay open just like a standard slipjoint, and I like it, so I think I'll just touch up the edge and use it "as is". At a total of $2.88 invested, it's not like I have anything to whine about either. NFSOT

The Victorinox had the tips of both blades bent when it arrived. A little plier work, and most would never even notice. NFSOT

I picked up the 442 with a broken tip at a garage sale for a buck some years back, had Buck reprofile the blade at no charge and send it back. It has turned out to be my travel/vacation blade, for use when I travel with my wife. Lightweight, compact, and I'm not out a lot if it gets confiscated. NFSOT

Have a great day in nature everyone, even if it's close to home.

I enjoy your “nature in the neighborhood” posts. I have plenty of wooded parkland within walking distance of my house, even though I live in a fairly close-in suburb. I have found that some of the most enjoyable walks start and end at the front door.

Wonderful capture of mother nature in all her glory.😍

Thanks, guys.
I really do hope people take and enjoy them, but it would probably have been a more genuine gesture if I hadn’t gone and bragged about it to my internet buddies…🤣

The Porch is a pretty tight knit group, though, so I guess it’s ok.
I don't consider it bragging Tom. I view your posting as encouragement for the rest of us to share in whatever way we are able. And now we also know how you encourage others to enjoy the great outdoors by sharing your talents with them. By the way, those are some good lookin' sticks.

No time for walking today, but I did manage to drop off some of my recent walking sticks at the parking area for a nearby trail network:

The Fieldmaster did come back home with me, though…
Did you do all of the carving with that Fieldmaster Tom? Very nice work.

Deer hunting season this past month has squelched most of my impulse for woods walking but the trails are back to safe.

Having waited through several years, and after 5 nice drying days and before the first snows of the winter I went out today to harvest a pretty nice RED BELTED POLYPORE. These have been growing for years.

Red-belted-polypore-group.jpg

They are about to go into the totally brown phase so before losing all the color I decided to bring one home. The one on the bottom is about 11” wide which is a big one for these parts though in my collection of Maine Woods Collectibles I do have a 13” one (see photo below). That is a monster for our standards but in some parts of the US - the North West I believe - you can find polypores in the 18” to 20”+ size.

The new one ~ Too small to make a mask but will be a very nice ornament. A coat of varnish or two will boost and retain the color for years to come.

I’ll post more when it is cleaned up and ornamental. :)

Hey - 👀 Where’s CelloDan CelloDan ? I haven’t seen any posts from him since his most excellent boating photos in September. Am I not checking in often enough? Dan are you isolating on your boat?
