Ahh! :D I think I scored a GEC #46 Ironwood Whaler!! ♡

Get the GEC. It’s a lucky score. Never turn your back on luck, as she/he can be fickle. You can always get the Buck, this is the chance to get a really nice GEC in hand and if you don’t like it, you can put it back out in the world with likely no loss.

Okay! :) You're right. I think the GEC is the best option too. ^_^ I just hope this guy doesn't try to sell it to me for $300 ;P

I would get the GEC but also get a sheath for it. I used to have the elephant toe nail from them and it is a huge knife. Your Buck 112 might even feel flimsy in comparison. :D

This is my GEC #66 I have carried exclusively for aix months now.
The 66 is one of my favorites and that is a beautiful example.

Okay, I definitely will try. I still don't know how much this guy is selling the knife for and he isn't emailing me! Probably it being the weekend and all. Ahh, the suspense. So I honestly might not even be able to afford a sheath for it, unfortunately. It's a knife shop in Virginia I think and their other knives are not ridiculously priced, so I'm hopeful he's selling it for the normal price. That is a beautiful knife! I love the colors! :)

*Oh also, do you mean huge as in bulky and heavy? Or huge as in long? The larger blade is only supposed to be 3".

Huge as in bulky and heavy. When you take the knife in your hand and open it, you will rise it above and shout I HAAAVE THE POWEEEEER!!

I wouldn't pay $300 for a Whaler. This batch of Whalers are just being finished by GEC. There will be others. Just keep checking the GEC dealers rather than fleabay.

I understand the interest and desire for the Whaler. It really is a cool knife and certainly interesting. I personally prefer something like the 72-73-74 series for an EDC. I have a small stack of them that I haven't used. I like trappers. But I also like about a 4" closed length slippie. That pushes me to the 42-44 size and the choice is always one or two blade versions. You can buy leather pocket slips at KSF, and other GEC dealers. If you are in doubt on whether a knife will fit, you can call and ask. But they're good to have around and available as I always seem to be picking up a new knife from time to time. The slips keep the knife from getting banged up in a pocket or a hand bag.

Okay, that might answer my question but I'll still ask. Okay, I've got $150. I am SO torn between the GEC #46 Whaler or getting a Buck Vanguard with this super cool sheath. I know the GEC is much rarer and more valuable... but I honestly still do not know what to do! I can only get one of the two options. What would you guys do?

Yeah no. I'm tops paying $140 or $150.

If you want to get into GEC knives - pick a couple of their dealers that offer pre-order or early reserve programs and sign up for whatever their notification system is, and get ready for the scramble to commit to buying them sight unseen. That's about the only way to get them for normal retail prices, unless it is a common or relatively unpopular pattern.

I would never get any use of out a knife like the Whaler, unless I wanted to spread peanut butter on a sandwich in one move. I also wouldn't drop $150 on any GEC, but the market and inflation are what they are.

Yeah the sheath is a bit over $40, and the Vanguard is $90 ish. So $150 covers it.
You’re good to go.

Still, the Vanguard you can pick up anytime, I would be tempted to snag the GEC. That being said, I am a big fan of Buck in general. I have a 119 because, well, it’s pretty much compulsory. ;)

Everything you said I agree with :) ^

I might spend >$150 on a GEC knife, but it is certainly on the high end at the moment. Sparkly, based on your threads, you don't seem to have money to just throw around on new knives. Think about the Whaler before you buy and take off the rose colored glasses. There are other GEC knives that would probably make a much better EDC. I was trying to be gentle in my last post, but JC57 sort of called it for me on the whaler, it's a knife I would never carry or use and I don't spread peanut butter or jelly with slip joints. Like I told you, I have a #36 Sunfish and it will never see pocket time and if I ever decide to start selling knives, it is the first one to be listed.

I don't have a Buck 119 and that doesn't bother me a bit.

I think you'd be out of your gourd if you got that Buck instead of the wide-blade GEC folder. Wide flat blades like that are awesome.

I think I'm definitely going with the GEC, so yay! I'm not out of my gourd ^_^ But I still haven't heard from the guy. -___- I REALLY hope he's selling it for $150 or under. :/
