Ahh! :D I think I scored a GEC #46 Ironwood Whaler!! ♡

The guy selling me the Whaler says he doesn't know of any GEC pouches/sheaths/slips that would fit it. :/
An old flip phone belt case/sheath might fit.
I have one that fits my RR 'Zombie Nick' Sunfish (4 inches closed) no problem.
Using my Outdoorsman Series Sunfish at 4 1/4 inches closed, it is a little hard to snap the flap.

I bought one on Friday- Arrived today..ridiculously large. Peeled back the paper just enough to briefly look at it and back in the tube it went.
The woods I have seen so far look great..Cool knife and a bit of a departure from my usual fare.

Victorinox Sheaths might fit too, or some tactical molle pouches? Need to measure the knife, but I am sure there is gonna be some pouch or sheath that fits.

I don't venture into GD too often, other than a cursory glance here and there, but this thread caught my eye.

OP, if you haven't done so already, I would encourage you to read through the thread that pertains to this knife. I know some other folks have mentioned that as well and it is good advice. It is a unique pattern and I would say it certainly is not for the faint of heart unless you simply want to look at it.

GEC #46 Whaler

A few notes in regards to this knife:
  • It is large, easily the biggest slip joint in my burgeoning collection. To me, it is reminiscent of the ZT folders that I have a fondness for in terms of its sizing.
  • This knife is a nail breaker, it has the hardest pull of any slip joint I've ever handled, the pen blade being more difficult than the main. I have strong nails so this does not deter me too much but not everyone is so fortunate. There are ways to open the knife if your nails are not up to the task, but this is a point you should still consider.
  • Despite the main blade being so large, it is ground nice and thin and should make for an excellent slicer.
Despite being a brick of a knife and requiring adamantium infused talons to open the blades, it is still a very cool knife and anyone would be happy to have one in their collection. It is kind of looked at as more of a novelty but there a few folks who have stated that they will be putting it to use and I look forward to reading their notes in regards to its performance when they do.

I haven't decided what I will do with mine yet, I have plenty of other more suitable knives to carry but perhaps someday, the fancy will take me and I will have to slip it in my pocket and give her a whirl.

Here are a couple of pics, including one beside a ZT 0301.

That was not expected... I would love to handle one, out of curiosity. But, I am glad I didn't spend any coin on it...
I must say that I agree. The blade seems ridiculously wide in relation to the length. In this style, I appreciate very much the Sunfish : smaller, lighter but still a bit weird with the elephant toe nail blade. However, it's an excellent slicer and (despite the weight) is very easy in the pocket thanks to the flat, rounded, equal end handle. And I love the bear trap spring...

Yeah I didn't think it was that big. Holy folding spatula batman..
This made me realize that it may work nicely as a small folding camp utility type folder. Think of how the Nessmuk spine/tip was supposed to be used as a spoon, for example.

I am sure it has its practical applications. Not sure about a fitting pouch anymore, could always go custom given that the knife is a commitment to begin with :D

Just tried out the GEC with belt loop that I have... it fits my #36 Sunfish (just barely) so should easily fit the #46 Whaler. This is the large size and I forgot that my GEC made slip/pouch had the belt loop. I believe that makes it a little more expensive.
The 46 Whaler is a larger knife than the 36 Sunfish. 1/4" longer and pretty sure wider as well based on the main blade profile.

So the Whaler is the same size as a typical contemporary folding flipper knife?

It looks to be almost the size of 300 series ZT

Unfortunately I don't know what the various number codes of ZT models are like in size. It's like trying to decode which BMW is which! XD

Mine is actually sitting right next to my Advocate, and they are, in a general sense, very similar in size.

Length wise, anyway. The Whaler is a good bit wider tho.
