SHIPPING NOTICE RECEIVED!!! GSO-5.1 and Necker inbound  Expect pics and video + review to follow.

Just letting y'all know, they may be late but they are on their way ;)

The GSO 10 is at the top of my wishlist atm, and the 4.1 isn't far behind. Hoping to pick up both relatively soon.

My GSO-5.1 and Necker are waiting for me at home! Alas, I've been at work for 13+ hours now and still have a few to go... :grumpy:

I'll try to post some pics tonight

Blade and Flame or anyone, where did you order yours from? His site says all sold out... I have one I picked up on the exchange, a 5.0 I think, I'll get pics up later if at all possible. Thanks in advance!

I participated in the recent Pre-orders.

By the way, there was no GSO-5.1 waiting for me at home last night :( But there was a Necker! :) That's something, anyway. I'll post pics after trying it out for a few days, still not sure I'll keep it (with other expenses building up around me, funds are tightening).

]Someone had a request.... Took these yesterday afternoon... So here are the 2 together.. though I have a question: Which GSO 5 or 5.1 do I have?? The tang is definitely different then the current.. And I didn't know BRKs did any work on GSO knives? But I must have the fully convexed BRK version?? Help out a knife freak! Enjoy the pics.

Oh, and after handling these two back to back and comparing the feel and swing... If I were to take one with me... it'd be the....

GSO 5.x

First thing. The GSO is thicker stock and the scales are bulkier. The knife is heavier in both cases and this makes it actually useful when chopping. The GSO 5.x has enough weight it will chop, the RMD doesn't feel right when trying to chop. Also, the RMD scales are only contoured "vertically", no palm swell. This is very noticeable when handling both knives. The RMD feels "flat" and doesn't fill my hand. Another thing about the handles on the GSO is that there is that little pinkie hook.. This keep the knife locked in your hand much better in chop mode than the RMD. Also you have 2 finger coils that make it really lock in. Add the handle thickness and this knife becomes part of you (the GSO).

The choils... The GSO choil is not as usable as the RMD. However, there is more usable edge on the GSO because of this. Also due to choil on the handles of both knives, you end up have what seems like an extra inch of blade on the RMD.

Steel choice goes to... undetermined.

The sheath on the GSO is great. RMD....

Only downside to the GSO (other than a small choil that can easily be enlarged if desired) is the weight. This is also a huge benefit. So, a few extra ounces weigh you down, but also give you much more utility.

I want a GSO 10 (love that tall blade), and I'd love to check out a smaller GSO4 in m390, though the 5 is really the perfect length if you are trying to use this knife as more a versitile tool then just a cutter/slicer.

Oh, and last thing that I don't care for are coatings... I don't see a purpose other than aesthetics..

Hope this added some value to the OPs theme! Cheers!

Sloth you have an early 5.1 that was convexed by Bark River. The corby scales and lanyard mount are the clear identifiers I believe. When Guy was first starting out be had a loose business relationship with BR which luckily didn't pan out and he has moved on. The 5 will not have a choil if i understand the design flow. Here is my early 5.1 in ELMAX(top). It evolved since your piece and has been refined further to the most recent design.

I see... I really like the one I have.. I'd love a newer version though too.. And a 5 w/o choil sounds like pure goodness :)

And thanks!

He has stated he is switching from M390 to CPM 20CV which is memory serves right are about the same steel just made by different companies.

Bumping this thread while waiting for the belated GSO-5.1 and Necker.

For those wondering about stonewashed CPM-3V and corrosion, here is my GSO-10 after a hard day's use cutting a path through the woods for cattle-panel fencing. It wasn't raining. I'll post again after i clean her up:

This is my GSO 4.1 3V after a 3 day canoe trip in Sweden. I have no corrosion at all.I have to say before the trip I spayed the knife with Ballistol spay. The spray is also 100% biological. So it wont do harm when using for food prep.

Ballistol - I'll look into that! I honestly don't mind the freckles, as you can see from the video and after-pics, they mostly rubbed away. I'll be rubbing mineral oil on it from time to time when I won't be using it for a stretch of days, but that isn't all that often as I actually put it to use relatively often.

Those dyed scales seem to be working out for you! They still look great

Yes the RIT dye worked great. It stays on very well. No discoloration at all. I like the handle much more in this color.

Got my neckers the other day! Cool little knives, need to put them to use and put some lanyards/fobs on them. Also, I'm kinda stoked to have gotten #002 and #003 - ups the coolness factor for me :)

Thanks Guy!! (Now I just want to get the Gen 2 GSO-10 :) )
