Alternatives to "Beer Scout Knife?"

No worries, I too do not know the full story behind GEC's decision to make the original radio knife in 2013 (i think it was). Maybe it was an sfo but under the GEC label? I don't know. But the 15 is a boys knife and called such and boys use to play and fix radios and they also had to open bottles of soda or pop depending on your local. Im calling the the big guy to help with all this. @waynorth.

Can you enlighten us on GEC's decision to run the original radio knife? Was this one of you SFO's or just some arm twisting? If i remember you may have had a second radio knife run under your diamond shield with a spear blade at some point. Anyhow can you shed some light on all this and the history of the radio knife in general?

The crown lifters and the radio jacks are fine knives with an opener but the Beer Scout really managed to capture something special.

It was a good knife with a catchy name/story and it just resonated. It's a shame it was cut down in it's prime. I have two but I would have had more.

It actually is when you count up dealing with the old bottles.

Cans take up less space especially if they get crushed down and are lighter, can be turned into any aluminum product, any raw aluminum can be made into cans so you don't need to wait for a bottle picker to send the stuff back to washed and sterilized before it's reused.
At the soda pop and beer bottling plants I had tours of, the glass bottles were washed and sterilized on site. (both used, and fresh from the bottle manufacturer bottles)
Melting down and processing the "old" aluminum into "new" aluminum takes a lot more energy (and steps) than washing and sterilizing bottles.
In fact, I remember reading somewhere years ago, that it takes almost as much energy to recycle aluminumas it does to refine raw aluminum.
Glass is also recycled by being ground down and mixed in with the new glass ingredients.
No argument that cans, crushed or no, take up less space. (Since cans also weigh a lot less than bottles, I suppose the soda and beer companies can get more flats of singles, and cases of 6 packs, 12 packs, and 24 can cases on the trucks going to warehouses and distributors across the country, lowering their shipping costs per can.)
You are also overlooking the cost of the machinery to convert from bottles to cans. It is/was a major expense to switch from bottles to cans.
I doubt any of the machines used on the bottling line could be converted to work with cans.

I can think of one advantage of bottle over can: The bottle stays cold longer. :)

From what I remember of the bars/pubs my grandparents took me to when I was a kid, and the establishments I managed that sold alcoholic beverages for on premise consumption, the bartender put the empty bottles and cans in the trash, and then into the dumpsters out back.
The cans and bottles were not recycled; unless some independent dumpster diver came by to collect the bottles and cans before the garbage truck came by and took it all to the and fill.
Most landfills "back in the day" did not separate out the metals, plastics, paper, and glass for recycling. It all got buried with-in minutes of being dumped. (None of the land fills in the areas I was in, incinerated the trash at the time. I don't know if any of them do now. Thanks to CARB, I really doubt those in California do, because of the air pollution regulations. I hear you can't even burn wood (or anything else) in your home fireplace in So. Cal now due to CARB emission/pollution regulations. A question for those unlucky enough to reside in So. Cal: Is it still legal to have a BB-Q in your back yard or at some park using charcoal or wood chips, or has that activity (and/or smoking your meat and fish) been banned, too?)

Beer Spout Knife.
Beer's Out Knife.

Beer Route Knife.
Beer Trout Knife (with scaler on back of opener).

I like “stout knife” the can pick up the spring tension a bit too, make the name really appropriate. It has the EO notch, so everyone’s thumb nails should be safe.

Cap Lifter Jacks have been around several decades - even the shell handle company's used to knock them out - Colonial, Hammer Brand, and Imperial. OH

Didn't someone on here suggest a sowbelly with a caplifter blade and suggest the name Beerbelly?
How about Beer Scout*? With the asterisk you micro etch a legal disclaimer along the spine of the blade " * This knife is in no way associated or affiliated with Scouts BSA, or the GSA, or any other organization that wishes to use the name "scout" to describe their activities"

The Beer Scout Knife appears to be one of GECs great classics. I believe we all have some kind of an understanding that the Boy Scouts of America (now "Scouting BSA" in many instances)...persuaded GEC to stop making the Beer Scout Knife.
It was my understanding GEC completed the run, and stopped making them. The BSA/GSA had nothing to do with the end of production.
I would be surprised if GEC did another run, and used any other the previous names a second time. They told me (quote) "If there is a second run (or more) of any pattern or knife, it has to be noticeably different from all the previous runs." (end quote)

An Observation: Since every "Official" (and unofficial) 4 blade "Scout Knife" has a beer and/or soda bottle cap lifter/screwdriver blade ... technically they could all be called a "Beer Scout".

Anyway, how about "THE CAPPY JACK" or "THE JACK CAPPY"? (they can leave off the "THE" if they prefer.)

they did 2 runs, 2015 & 2016 . And named them both beer scouts.

also, someone posted the cease and desist letter that BSA sent GEC. They also took the beer scout pictures off of their production photos archives.

I was not aware of that.

I don't know what their issue is. When I hear "Scout Knife" I immediately picture in my mind the 4 blade scout knife (with beer and/or soda bottle opener) that has been the "official" Scout knife since pre-WW 1.
I'm pretty sure that is the knife (a guess) 99% of those who hear "Scout Knife" think of when they hear that term.

Well, I think it was back around 2013 or so that GEC ran a 15 pattern knife that had a shield with engraved word "scout". These were and are extremely highly sought after. It was a sheep with pen secondary. Esnyx was taking caplifter/screwdrivers off of the second run of clip/caplifters (crown lifter version) and putting them on sheepsfoot 15's and let's face it, kids aren't buying these GEC's, adults are and we drink beer and used the crown lifters for such, so beer scout.....you'll have to talk to Evan or Bill to find out more, probably quite a bit of joking around at Rendezvous (Evan used to go each year) and well, they know the story and I can only speculate but beer scout- combo of the venerable gec scout and crown lifter used for opening bottled beer seems to make sense. Again, Evan @esnyx would have the whole story.

"Beer Guide"
"Beer Explorer"
My alternative to the elusive (and pricey) GEC caplifter knives was to order a Case Mini Trapper with a cap lifter blade. Still wouldn't mind a Beer Scout one of these days.
