Am I Broken?

Wife and I recently made a deal in which I am "allowed" to buy a new knife...

Now, I have bought most of my knives without "permission", we're cool like that, though she does give me a bit of s#!% when I do, especially more expensive ones. She's bought a few as gifts, some nice ones too, so it was more of a running joke that I was "allowed", but anyways...

I've scoured all the usual sites, all the big ones, all my favorite smaller ones, dug through the marketplace here, and even google-fu'd some new ones with a lesser known online footprint... I have a pretty good budget in mind, looking in the roughly $600 range give or take...
Yet after hours upon hours of scouring knife porn (to her dismay mind you), not a single thing jumps out at me as a "oooo, I must have it"...

Am I broken? Am I cured? Something just ain't right it seems...

Thinking a little more about this, I conclude that either of the following two is true:

- buying a knife with permission takes the excitement away. You are cured, walk away from this hobby. And don't start another similar addiction (cars, boats, motorcycles, cameras, golf clubs, etc). Smart and happy wife, happy life, etc.
- $600 is actually not enough for what you really want. You have been eyeing these beautiful Shiros recently ...

You could combine the two. Buy a $1000 knife, $400 without permission :D :p

Cheers,

Roland.

I am also satisfied with my collection. Enough various users and a few nicer knives. All kinds of super steels. Size ranging from machetes to SAKs. But now I am looking at ethnic, traditional, handmade knives, using only natural materials and that is all uncharted territory for me. So the adventure goes on.
This very much. This hobby is so multifaceted that you can always find something cool as long as one is willing to step out of their comfort zone.

Perhaps you are at the moment, like me, temporarily content.

I’ve bought 5 knives in the last couple years and in the end they are all what I wanted them to be but at the same time NONE of them excited me. Hell for the first time I’m thinking about selling off a few light users.
Now there is a custom fixed blade out there somewhere that will still blow my skirt up but honestly the only thing I can think of that I’d be interested in buying right now is a second copy of my EDC just to have in case something tragic were to happen to mine.

You typed six words that could have been meant any number of ways. No emojis, no memes, or any other indication you were joking. Your personality, sense of humour and intent are not intrinsically tied to the default forum font. But if we're supposed to guess based simply on typed words what is a joke and what is not, then based on all this, I'm going to have to say the part in bold is a joke. ;)

You mean after 16 years on this board, you don't know me? :D

Are you Canadian? LOL!

I have found very little over the past three or four years that I wanted to open my wallet for.

Maybe we are both broken.

buying knives, or anything other that you feel you just have to spend money for, or drinking, or doing drugs, or gambling. All addictive behavior. Most of us are guilty of all or some of that, but breaking the habit is always a good thing.

Lately I'm still interested in many knives. Usually just not interested enough that I'd want to spend any money on them though.

Pretty much sums it up... Definitely still love 'em, and scrolling through the knife porn was in and of itself worth it... It's just that none "spoke to me" if you will...

As for the price, $600 give or take, I definitely have wiggle room, and as for narrowing "what I want", if I knew what I wanted I'd have bought it already. Every site I searched, litterally a dozen and then some, both custom and production, I searched "all knives" in descending price, and I started really paying attention at around the $1500 range, fixed, folders, autos, tradionals, and I saw the Shiro's and Rocksteads, Busse's etc., and I saw a ton of gorgeous and amazing knives, but none jumped off the page to say, "TAKE ME NOW!" $600, (give or take), that is just my own personal comfort zone... The more it goes over $1000, the more it would likely become a safe queen, and I don't want a safe queen, as I currently have none That I don't/won't carry... It would suck losing a $600 knife, it would suck twice as much losing a $1200 knife, after that, I don't even want to entertain the idea of how much it would suck... Lord knows I am far from rich...

Blade show had crossed my mind, but under the current circumstances, and other schedules & obligations, it's just not a very realistic option to travel to GA in June this year...

I should probably take @axtalan0 's advice, and just get out while I can, but I fear it is just a temporary contentment. I've handled enough knives now to know what I like, I own enough knives to tackle nearly any situation between suit & tie affairs to path clearing in the wilderness, and all points in between, but something will come along at some point and grab my pair for me...

I think I shall just start a seperate fund, just for knife shopping, since it seems at least for now the "impulse" buying is gone... That way when it returns, or I do stumble across "the one", or make it to Blade show maybe next year? I'll have a much bigger budget of disposable funds to splurge with...

Definitely appreciate the dialogue though. Even the assumptions of my relationship being broken, they gave me a good chuckle...

What about delving into customizing, or even making Your Own?
That's where I'm starting to lean.

I've been Very fortunate in finding a few of my "Grails" the last year or so.... I've even turned a few away.
That was my first sign that I knew I was close to my knife limits.... I know there are More knives that I want.... But I haven't seen them made.
So I think I need to be the one who makes them..... haha.

Maybe that is a way to keep you "in the game".... So to speak?

"Keep your lives free from the love of knives and be content with what you have."
Hebrews 13:5 (paraphrasing, of course, LOL!)

Maybe try focusing on something else for a while. Sounds like it's just not time.

And yes, I've had to take this advice before.

I'd wait and take a look at what CPK is coming out with later this year.

California Pizza Kitchen's got a solid cutlery line? Or is it Pizza by California Kitchen that's got the better steel

But real talk strategy9 strategy9 , you're welcome to buy me one or three if that extra cash is burning a hole in yr already apparently well-beknife'd pocket

In actual seriousness, what about other bladed fun (axes? ...cool axes?) or some super nice sharpening stones/equipment, eg the kind of accoutrements that add up? OR something weird/old/inherently limited, like a swedish barrel knife, along those lines?

I'm good on stones for the time being although that thought has crossed my kind as well... Maybe even save the overall life of the stones I have (and buy back some time) and get myself a worksharp or wicked edge?

The axe idea also has intrigued me though nothing fancy, I'd be more into a nice vintage 100+ year old Jersey head, refitted with a nice new handle?

I could use a nice new big axe now that I think about it? And a power sharpener.......... hmmmmmm, you might actually be on to something here?

Soooooo, I guess I'm still alright... Or still not alright, depending who you ask...
Watching some TV last night with the wife, as she fell asleep and I was again just scrolling the knife porn sites, same effect. Lots of gorgeous knives, none jumped off the page, so I started googling specifics, and seeing what page 3+ brought up... Well, I wound up on a site I had never been on before, and this beaut caught my eye.

I honestly wasn't even looking for a Hinderer either. I had actually searched "Marfione Star Lords" and was admiring all the out of stock models when I stumbled on this one as a new arrival. I know and totally respect Rick's reputation, and always could appreciate their blade profiles, particularly the "skinner" profile, but just that the typical standard color offerings weren't all that appealing to me at their asking price, and after market scales on top of a $400+ knife isn't up my alley either, as I feel at that price I should already like it straight out the box, AND as you all know they are often sold out anyways....

Something about the bronzed hardware on that green/black scale looked great to me though. (I almost bought a GT police in that same color combo a couple years back).

It was priced appropriately, not some obscene mark up you often see, and most importantly it was "1 IN STOCK!"

So, I searched and cross referenced reviews for the site I was on quick, just to make sure it was legit, and it was so, at around midnight I pulled the trigger...

It's a 3", and I don't own a bunch of smaller folders aside from a small Sebbie, a Boye lockback, and a small Ruger flipper, so it certainly fills a void in my "accumulation", as it is certainly different from the rest, and I no longer own anything in 20cv so, there is also that.
Gotta say I'm excited!

And at just $425, B bleasure , I can still buy a worksharp and keep my eyes out for a vintage axe head and stay within my self determined preset budget parameters!
So Rick Hinder is the winner winner chicken dinner, and wasn't really even on my radar...

I just got a 3.5" skinny version from @tomsch and it's a great (useful) blade pattern imho. I hope you'll be well pleased. I am.
