Another Paypal Discussion

Forgive my overbearance. I do not know the details of your transaction. I just take issue with blanket statements. Hundreds a child predators and pediaphiles have been taken into custody and incarcerated due to internet monitoring and baiting..
In a commercial transaction issue, a good place to start is the Chamber of Commerce. Many people do not know where to turn or what to do and overworked bureu investigators are loath to chase their or anybody else's tail if all there is to substantiate a fraudulent sale is a single web address. My first thought is $800 is a lot to risk without assurance. Sending Bank Money Orders made out to individual names that said names are printed on to MO by the bank is one safegaurd proving payment. Veryfying established transaction history is another. .

As I received assistance from USPS some years ago, I also reject the broad brush condemnation. We have had numerous cases here at BF where local LEO got justice for scammed members.

Having said that, your suggestion that someone go to the Chamber of Commerce is laughable. It is worse, in fact, than suggesting a complaint to the Better Business Bureau. We are not dealing with people who care two hoots about reputation beyond being able to keep scamming.

Those that comment that others will try to cheat PayPal if they don't help cheat Paypal probably deserve to be scammed.

I just had to pass on a blade I've wanted for a few years. The price was decent, but it was one of those Gift or + 3.5% deals. 40 minutes after I saw it, it was claimed (I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did). In cases like that, it's tough to stick to principle...and there's no sense trying to talk to the seller because they know that they can put you on hold and the knife will sell under their terms.

This Paypal Gift thing is getting out of control!
Today a custom knife was listed for over $3,000.00
Asking for Paypal Gift!
Idiotic!

I used to accept both gift and goods but would require the seller to add 3% if using goods. Recently I manned up and will now not be accepting gift nor will I ask the buyer to pay the fees either. I realized that it is the seller's responsibility to pay the fees and that it's BS when a seller asks you to pay the fees.

So from now on any sales thread you see that belongs to me will never say "add 3% for goods" again.

If you just link a checking acct to paypal there are no fees. it's about the most good faith you can insert into an online p2p deal.

besides you should be proud of who you are, not how well you follow the rules..or how well others think you follow the rules. the rules are generally a result of previous irrational behavior. I don't need stop signs. People who don't use care at intersections need stop signs.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, do any of you ever take 30 seconds to PM the seller and say something to the effect of "I'm very interested in your item but I am not willing to cover the fees or use the gift option"? Or do you just pout about it and then complain about it without ever talking to the seller? If you spent just the time that it takes to send a PM, then you may find that the seller will compromise or agree to terms of the sale that are mutually agreeable to both of you.

Here's an alternative if you really hate the option to gift payment or cover fees......buy EVERYTHING you want from online retailers, pay full retail price and shipping and then you won't have to worry about it. Or if it's a custom you want, get on the makers books, wait 3 years and then get your knife without having to agree to sale terms you don't agree with.

And FWIW, I have had BUYERS contact me and specifically request to pay with the "gift" option even though I stated that my preference was the goods option. So believe it or not, not all sellers are out to get over on you or rob you. I will usually work with whatever the buyer prefers and is most comfortable with and I am very open to communication discussing the terms of the sale.

And lastly, if I am buying something that retails for several hundred dollars and it has been greatly discounted by the seller, then in my opinion I am getting a great deal and spending a LOT less than what I would spend at an online retailer or brick and mortar shop. So it's not going to kill me to cover someone's transaction fee that is hooking me up with a great deal. I am appreciative of the discounted price and the availability of items that are sometimes next to impossible to procure elsewhere. So to cover a nominal transaction fee is inconsequential to me.

But hey that's just me.

As has been pointed out several times by others, the seller can simply calculate his price to cover fees. Nothing wrong with that. Just an expense of "doing business."

This is the way it's gonna be with me from now on. I won't buy, sell or trade with anyone who asks for gift payments asks me or anyone else to cover their fees. Or has all their posts in just the exchange and contribute nothing else here . I have never asked to be paid by gift or asked a fee and I expect to be treated the same.

Tit for tat. But hey that's the beauty of capitalism. You don't have to buy jack $hit from anyone that you really feel is out to rape you on the price of something or the terms of their ad offend you so much that you refuse to even establish any sort of dialog with them about the listing. Or inconvienience you to the point that you have to multiply the price by X percent to arrive at a final payment number.

To each their own, but I have bought and sold both ways and never had a problem or found it offensive. Maybe I've just been lucky but the lions share of people I have dealt with have been great people and my buying and sales experiences have all been great thus far.

Asking for Paypal gift for purchasing goods is FRAUD
I do not see what this has to to do with paying retail or long wait times.
I am amazed at the people defending this practice.
Many people on this forum have been burned by Paypal Gift .

And what if the buyer requests to pay with the gift option? Because that has been requested from buyers from me before. Should I call the FBI on them?

I prefer the goods and services option but I am willing to work with buyers that ask for specific payment options as long as it's mutually agreeable.

Doing a little research on the member you are dealing with May go a long way. How long have they been a member? What is their reputation, etc? Not foolproof but it can help.

Why would a buyer ask to pay with Gift Option?
Buying and selling online is a risk
It requires a quick judgement on the integrity of the seller that you will get the item
As described if at all. I think This whole Paypal Gift thing reflects badly on sellers who ask for it.

You would have to ask the buyer why they wanted to pay that way. I can't answer that for you. I just work with folks as much as I can and if that's how they want to pay, then that's how they want to pay.

And as I have stated previously I prefer the goods and services option but I will work withy buyers that ask for other payment options as long as we both find them mutually acceptable.

I have a friend on Archerytalk that was accepting Paypal "gifts" as payment. They not only locked his account they seized all of his funds. Which was well over a grand. Better be careful with that gift crap-it wasn't meant for buying or selling goods.

And before you say it--YES THEY CAN! Just read your user agreement.

I use Paypal because it offers me some protection as a buyer. That is well worth the 3%!!!

I couldn't agree more with everything you've pointed out.. Thumbs up
Griz! I personally care more about my reputation on the forums as it will allow me to continue to trade/buy/sell to my fellow bladeforums members. Getting a bad review is something that I will avoid now and in the future at all costs. Why on earth would I risk my privledges here to burn someone here on the forums. To make that assumption is ridiculous. If you don't like the terms move on no one is forcing you to buy anything.

Thumbs up brother!

And just so my position is clear (once again) I prefer the goods and services option. But I also care about my buyers and am willing to work with whatever they prefer as long as we both agree on it.

Not all of us are crooks or looking to rip people off. The satisfaction of the people I deal with and the reputation I build with my fellow community members means way more to me.
