Antique Cattaraugus Knives and Company History

I posted this in the "newest addition" section. No better place for it than the Cattaraugus section.

Traded into this one at my local knife shop the other day. Beautiful, solid barlow. Seems like the tang stamps are backwards...large stamp barely fitting on the pen blade and tiny stamp on the clip blade. Backside of clip blade is stamped 22219. Blades appear to be full and there isn't even a hint of play in either one with solid half stops. Obviously, it's been cleaned and polished and only has a few spots on the blades. It's hard to beat the old school build quality of a Cattaraugus.

IMG_2394.JPG IMG_2395.JPG My 22169, I am so impressed with the quality of this knife. When I first got this one I didn't know about this thread and posted it in the "new additions". As I stated in the other thread this has become my daily RFP carry. I look forward to going through this entire thread and seeing all the beautiful knives. I'm hoping that a lot of them are still saved here after the photo bucket cleansing.

Thanks friend!!!! I hope that you're able to locate one.

One of the unique features of this knife is that the secondary blade has a half stop whereas the main blade does not. I was hoping that someone could tell me whether or not this was a common feature with Catt knives or any of the other older brands. Not that I'm as experienced as most around here but I have never seen another knife with this feature.

I went through my copy of the Ritchie & Stewart Cattaraugus catalogue and did not find a knife with your blade combos Dave . The only one that I found with a Punch was a non-serpentine Cattle Knife . It also had a Spear & Spey with a Federal Shield . My catalogue does not even show the B32109 that @supratentorial shows .

Thank You for looking Harry!!:thumbsup::cool:

Just Beautiful, Galvanic!! 2 great knives!! If you missed post #541, you have to go back to it folks!!

Same with LostBall's knife in post #543!!

Made my day guys!!!

Some Cattaraugus info, Derek and I have found a batch of Cattaraugus knives that do not have Little Valley NY on the tang which we believe dates them very early. Not sure if they were made in Germany or not. Korn and JBF where thick as thieves as they say and did alot together and since Korn was in Germany buying for months at a time he might have gotten some knives made for JBF when he started Cattaraugus or even when he used the Champlin, Galvanic trademarks. Some knives shown below. catbutton4.jpg catlobster1.jpg oldcatwhittler1.jpg oldcatwhittler2.jpg

See the front of this old billhead dated 1890 that shows some of the trademarks that Cattaraugus used, Galvanic and WW Wilson. The other picture is of the back of that billhead and states what is warranted and what is not. On the bottom it states that goods marked Attica and Valley Falls are not.

Below are pictures of 4 knives the top 2 are Attica Knife Co marked and the bottom 2 are Valley Falls.

Derek and I have been searching for them for years and figured we would share the info.

Outstanding, Harry! Tell us more about your display rack (or I might've missed a previous post). Beautiful.

So many great knives and history here. One of my favorite threads!
Thank you very much for the kind words my friend !!!! I made the display rack myself . It was not too hard once you figure out how to do it . The trick is in how you put the word Cattaraugus on the wood . Let me know if you want to know how to do that . I also have done a rack for UNXLD FOR MY 77 Barlows and another one for my Taylors Eye Witness .

I know it's a little late Charlie, but thank you so much for the compliment and I am happy that I made your day. Not sure how I missed this post in this thread until now. I come by my username honestly:)

Can't believe how long its been since someone has posted in this Catt thread, will have to fix that.

Added this Catt 32739 3 3/4" slim Gunstock, I thought it was a whittler but have found it described as a gunstock stockman which would explain the spey blade.

Appears to be a fairly rare pattern that if in mint condition has considerable value according to a couple books, this one is far from mint but does have good bone and close to full blades.

That is a fine example of a a fairly rare pattern I expect . Is it of the Splitback Design like the Whittlers ??? I personally feel that Cattaraugus had the best looking Gunstock shape of any that I have ever seen . The color of that beautiful Catt Jigged Bone with Indian Trails is so nice . It would be very hard to keep that one out of pocket on a regular basis !!!! It appears to have a lot of life left in it too . Congrats on a fine find my friend !!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks Harry, it is not a splitback. It would make a great carry knife, still has great snap on all blades.
