Any news about Maher & Grosh?

Unfortunately opening my M&G box was a disappointing experience. The color of the bone is nothing like the examples on their website. (This photo actually makes it look better than it does in person. The color is very blah.)

I could probably get over that, but then I saw the poor sharpening job. The tip is rounded off, the edge bevel on the front side doesn’t even go all the way to tip of the blade, and the bevel on the back side is uneven and gets wider at the tip.

Here it is compared to the Tidioute version of the same knife.

I think your knife and covers looks really good, the jigging is incredible on your sample, and the tip will likely sharpen out……. but you can always sell or trade…… bummer it does not meet expectations.

I’ve admittedly been an apologist for GEC’s factory edges in the past. They’ve never been great, but in a different way than this. I’ve never had a blade from GEC with a rounded tip. When I first opened it I actually thought the very tip of the blade had been broken off. And at this premium price point, I think I’ll reach out to M&G and return it.

I got two different shades of brown wash and I was pleased because the lighter of the two reminds me of my favorite forum knife the 2012 Saddle Trapper... and the darker washed one looks like typical Antique Yellow Jigged Bone which is what these are... they do vary though. All the natural covers do... dyed bone, wood, stag, etc... I think yours look good.

The rounded tips, etc... not acceptable in my opinion. I would start by calling M&G Support or at least using the live chat on their page... though they might just take a message and have someone email you in a day or two.

I would think that even if there were no spares, GEC would fix this.

Two of the jigged bone arrived and they are so sweet, I had to drop what I was doing and order a couple cocobolos before I posted these jigged versions.

As Kenny the Onearmedbladenut used to say, GEC collecting is war!

This is a sturdy, working pocket knife with very fine finishing. Both of mine are about a 6 or 6.5 for main blade and the punch is slightly lighter, around a 5. I find the styling of the Maher and Grosh knives is my favorite, sort of a Northfield GEC with a little extra polishing, I prefer M&G over Northwoods (which are also very nice) by a hair.

Maybe yours escaped QC. Mine is not the best GEC edge I’ve had but it isn’t what you described.

I have one 15 CL that has a weird tip grind, but it seems rare to get something real out of whack like that... I will have to put on my reading glasses and look real close at all the recent ones. Could just be my eyes.
