Any recommendations for a good budget combat knife?

Ok, so now we're getting somewhere. This is not a combat knife, but a full on stab-em-up fighting knife.

I don't really buy the justification of defense against bears for exactly the same reason Maxim mentioned.
But hey, i'm a fan of "just because" being a good enough reason. So if you want it, get it.

How about the Cold Steel OSS sub hilt fighter?
The hilt and sub hilt would keep you from slipping up onto the blade, should you have to really stab something, raton non-slip handle, blade shape certainly seems to fit the shabby profile, but also looks like it could be a good slasher. Comes in the $65-70ish range.

For that matter, for a fightey fun toy that's sole purpose is to please the inner 9 year old boy in all of us, how about pretty much anything in Cold Steel's chaos lineup?

I really don't see myself ever using the knife, since I have the other, practical precautions against bears. Still, since the knife wouldn't really be used anyway, I figure why not bring it? Plus, like you said, it would please the inner 9 year old boy in me. As for me not being clear that I want a fighting knife and not a combat knife, that's really the fault of me being a relative newbie to knives. I apologize for any confusion.

My only concern about the Cold Steel OSS is the fact that since both edges are sharp, you can't press against the spine of the blade when taking it out of the sheath to prevent the edge from dulling. Does anyone know if that's a problem with this knife? Or does it come out of the sheath with no issues? I've heard edge dulling can be a problem with the Secure-Ex sheaths, at least on some knives.

Yeah, I do want something stabby, just for the sake of having it, really. Also, the main reason I'd ever bring it camping is because I mostly camp in an area that has a lot of bears, so it would be reassuring to have a stabby/fighter knife on top of some bear spray. It's not really logical, I know, but meh, why not actually use the knife for something? It would probably just collect dust otherwise. (I apologize if I've confused anyone as to what I actually want the knife for)

Carry bear spray. And wear a bell on your shoelace when hiking to alert bears to your presence.

And know your bear scat. Black bear droppings are small and have berries in them.

Grizzly bear scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray. :D

And get yourself a H&K Feint.

Get a bayonet.

offered him three of the knives listed here... including the glock field knife which was designed as a bayonette for the steyr-AUG, and it doesn't seem like he's as interested in getting any of them as much as the decision process. Made a mistake of talking about selling them cheap to do him a favour and let him play with some of the choices and he didn't do so much as reply to say he wasn't interested. on the bright side, due to my mis-post, I did get a warning about it from a MOD... my fault 100% so at least someone answered me, lol.

It is reason enough. But if one wants help in finding a knife, they gotta help us, you know? It was "I want combat, but I am not going to use it.", then it was "Well, I want a fighting knife.", then "I want something combat to take camping.", the "I want something stabby to take camping to stab bears." etc etc etc.

All I have been saying from the beginning is that its all good, and if one knows what they want the folks here can help.

But the folks here cant help someone figure out what they want. We're not mind readers.

I apologize, I was going to reply once I really had it set in stone what I'm interested in, but I can see it was rude of me to not say something sooner. I'm a pretty indecisive person, so I probably shouldn't have assumed I would know 100% what I was gonna get this soon after posting the thread.

I simply switched between combat and fighting because as I said earlier, I'm a newbie to knives, and I didn't know there was really a difference. As for the last two, that really was poor communication on my part for not saying specifically what the knife was gonna be doing while I was camping.

Its not rude or anything, and there is no apology needed, but we cant help you until you have some idea what you want and what you want to do with your knife.

I'm sure everybody here would be glad to suggest a knife for any situation or want, but we just have to know what that situation/want is.

i suggest going to the web sites of the major manufacturers: Spyderco, Benchmade, Ontario, Kabar, Boker, etc...then go more stabby/tacticool: TOPS, Extrema Ratio, Cold Steel, etc and browse. It will give you a baseline....even if your primary motivation is getting a knife that looks sexy (nothing wrong with that)

Then I suggest actually using your Becker. Either you will find it is exactly what you need, or you will find it is lacking in some features, and then you can look for a knife that has those features.

Look at the Ontario Spec Plus series. They have a wide variety, and with your budget, you could get 2-3 of them. They make a version of the Ka-Bar USMC(the SP1), but also a variety of other designs.

happens chief... sorry for being blunt. was likely just sour because the only reply I got was a mod giving me a slap on the hand rather than being sour at you. I totally understand indecisive... if you change your mind, you have my email.

Since you now know that daggers are legal in Canada, check out the Kabar EK44 dagger. It's pretty cool, can be had in Canada for about $130.

Well, I think I'll go with the above suggestion and get the Ek44. A dagger wouldn't typically be my first choice, but this one really appeals to me. Thanks for all the suggestions, and thanks rustyrazor for the offer.

You won't kill any animal with that though.

You need 8 inches or more.

Yeah, I figured that. Still, there's really no chance of that happening, and I have bear spray and other precautions anyway. Might as well get what's appealing to me, rather than a knife that will be practical in a scenario that will never happen. It would really just be an excuse to carry it anyway. I might look around for something similar that's a bit longer, but if I can't find anything I'll just go with the Ek 44.
