I couldn't agree with this more. Honestly, people here almost seem ungrateful for the testing. Sure, no one is asking me to do it - but to sit here and do nothing but criticize makes me wonder just how sour the grapes are for them

Since you mentioned money, it takes LOADs of money to buy these knives and test them. Hell, I've bought particular knives just because someone asked for me to test a certain steel.

In addition to the monetary aspect, I wish people would think of the time it takes. We have to spend the time sharpening the knife for testing (for consistency), doing the actual testing, uploading the video, resharpening the knife. Rinse and repeat. It eats up a HUGE amount of time. Guess what we get for it? Nothing, except for a lot of people telling us what we could have done better.

Yes, it takes a lot of money to get these knives to test.

The time it takes can be a lot also depending on the testing method and the added expense of the materials needed.

Thanks guys for a wealth of info and knowledge so far; and keeping the thread going positively... I as well appreciate the time taken and money spent on purchasing and testing. You "two" are a true asset to BF along with several
others... I did email Chris Reeves extremely polite about this thread to see if they wanted to shed some light on it.

I am VERY interested in testing Strider's S35VN. If anyone is willing to send some to me then I'm more than happy to test it. But I'm not going out and spending 400 of my money just to roll the dice.

Yeah, wouldn't it be nice if we could just call Mick Strider, Chris Reeve, Sal Glesser ect and say:

Hey man I need this X knife for testing and they go sure thing Man I will send that right out to you today......

Just doesn't happen in the real world..... Maybe in someones dream world ;)

What really happens is we have to BUY those knives to test and we might or might not use those knives after we are done with them.

It's not like a desktop review and we could sell them at full cost after the testing, most of these knives can be pretty beat up depending on the method.

Especially if we are doing a long term test like I have been doing lately, testing each knife for a month at work and they do see a lot of use and get a lot of wear.

Maybe you should look into getting interested members to get pool funds towards knives of interest for testing. After the testing is performed, the knife is awarded to one of the members who paid in.

I have had some knives donated just for testing over time, gifted to me.

We tried some of that awhile back and it never went very far because some of these knives are pretty costly, we aren't talking about Buck 110's here...

Basically people just want to see the tests and that's it.

I'm sorry, but when you take it upon yourself to post a video on you tube, and then on the Kershaw forum basically announcing S35VN was XXXX, against a company that sets the standard for high quality, you can't tell me there's not going to be any criticism against you. I don't know what you expect from people ? Why should we be grateful ? It's like you're demanding I take your word that all S35VN HT'd by CR (and Spyderco) steel is XXXX because you had 2 knives from those companies edge warp in the same manner. OK fine, XXXX for you. My own tests on MY knife doesn't reflect your experiences. I cut 93 pieces of semi-hard VGA monitor cord (was all I had) and no damage to the edge, either then the bevel feeling slightly chafed. But the edge itself was smooth and free of deformation. Was my test the same cutting difficulty yours was ? I don't believe so. But it was still a decent test in my book. And if the steel was as XXXX as you and Ankerson implicate, then shouldn't my edge have deformed after 93 hard cuts ? So no, I'm not going to jump on the, "XXXX CR's S35VN's HT" wagon yet.

Since you mention LOADS of money, why did you run out and buy 4 CR s35VN knives without testing one first (rhetroical - I already know your answer) ? Or wait for others to test it. I don't know why you just don't ask for your money back since it seems obvious you're unhappy with the steel's performance. Apparently you're more interested in going from thread to thread shouting, "Look everyone! Look how XXXX S35VN is!" Instead of, "Yeah I contacted CRK and told them I was very unhappy with their S35VN HT and would like a refund, or if possible exchange my knives for knives in S30V" And then take it from there. /shrug.

That's not what I said........ ;)

Don't put words in my mouth.....

When people are saying it can't compete with AUS8. What conclusion should I draw ? Seems to me, all the comparisons I've read are stating the HT is XXXX :)

Ahhhh... I didn't say that either......

Read my posts, what I really posted. ;)

I tested 3 knives in S35VN, 2 Mules and a Custom.

The Mules did well, the Custom... Not so well, but it is very thin.

What I did say was that S35VN needs to be harder to solve the issues as seen in John's videos and that I did see some of the same things happen.

Also that S35VN isn't S30V so it needs to be harder.

When reading this the history of 154CM pops into my mind. It is still a great steel IMO but it had some issues that needed to be resolved. Maybe the same goes for S35VN?

Things will get worked out over time I believe.

I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I used a word that I thought appropriately described the attitude towards CR's HT of S35VN. That was all. It was not based solely on your comments, but all the negative ones combined. Hope this doesn't drop me from your will where you leave your Andrew Demko's to me.

Thanks for your test results Corpus- I'm hoping a member from CRK will step into this thread as well- So please keep this intelligent and civil so it doesn't get locked down.

Keep in mind- I created the thread... I love all high-end knife manufacturers I have came in contact with (Owning that is) have no special interest to any of them period... nor do I look at a knife as a crowbar, machete or hack-saw = ) I have a family&bills and can only own one knife (Wifey would slaughter me LoL) hence my thread about making a single knife my EDC and the metals overall performance. (Also, would love to pass down a Father's "knife" to the daughter...)

Thanks again guys...

Well running S35VN at 58-59 could be a problem as indicated from the videos.

With as much testing that I have done on a lot of knives I did zero in on the problem and offered a solution to that problem, the edges did roll pretty fast so bumping the hardness should fix that problem.

That is the basic fix, if the edge rolls too fast then a higher HRC hardness is needed, if the edge chips out too fast then a lower HRC hardness is needed.

So what I am saying is there needs to be an adjustment in the heat treating as it seems that there are inconsistencies.

Looks like S35VN needs to be run a point or 2 higher than S30V as in 61-62 HRC.

So either my knife has a higher RC HT than the card sez (58-59RC - BD: Oct. 19 2011) Or my tests are too... weak ? Nooo not that.

I think XXXX should be equated to something awesome. Not XXXX.

That's the inconsistancies I am talking about.

That's also why manila rope is such a great test medium, it's NOT easy to cut, and it's very abrasive.

So if a folder edge is rolling too fast cutting rope there is a problem there (Yes there really is), we are talkiing about sub 4" folders here by the way.

I use rope and Cardboard, usually both one right after the other as in rope first to get some really good edge wear going on then move straight to cardboard after that, that can be very hard on the edges.

Thank you sir for your test. Though I have not put my CRK Lg Sebenza S35VN through a "professional" cutting test, I use it many times daily and from my experience the steel/ cutting edge best reflects what you describe. Needless to say I am still very pleased with my Sebenza's as I've always been, be it S30V or S35VN. I must also state that I do not baby any of my knives nor do I abuse them. I use them all the way to the point to where if I feel I'm going to seriously damage them, I just grab another tool. I expect big things out of Kershaw's/ ZT's S35VN, but if I am disappointed with it, which I doubt, I will be a class act guy and first discuss it with their CS, and I know they will take care of me as they always have in the past :)
