Any Winkler fans?

Anyone speculate on what would be the best replacement steel Winkler could use if 80crv2 was to become unavailable? Just a hypothetical.
Also not trying to complicate maters for Daniel and change “tradition” but is there a steel any of us Winkler fans would love to see in one of his blades.
I would be surprised if this topic hasn’t already been come up but i haven’t seen a thread on it?
Cruwear ...

Love Cruwear. Great choice. I also like CPM M4
Higher carbon steels for ability to develop a patina, natural or forced.
Like post #1241 for example.
That said untreated 80CrV2 is very very patinable. (👈🏻not a word) forced or naturally.

CPM 3V with a good heat treat continues to be one of my favorites for an outdoor blade. It's not the latest and greatest, but does a lot of things very well. And I'd be just fine with Winkler ditching the blade coating and going to a low-reflectivity sandblasted finish. Offer a DLC version for the dudes who need to be extra stealthy.
FWIW Winkler knives don't have any sort of blade coating. The blades are darkened using a black oxide concentrate from Caswell Plating. Its just an etchant thats a mix of phosphoric acid, selenious acid, nitric acid and copper that turns the blade black by creating a dark oxidation layer.

Ok, well, the "oxidation layer" then. It's something that buffs off with use, and therefore I think of it as a "coating," even if it technically isn't.

What I like about my Winkler is thougness/resistance to chipping and how easy it is to sharpen or just strop back to sharpness. Therefore, 14c28n or something similar for same-ish thoughness and ease of sharpening, with the added bonus of beeing almost stainless. But I would miss the patina..

A8mod would also be a good high thoughness/easy to sharpen steel, and while not stainless has more corrosion resistance than 80crv2. I see Casström have some production models in a8mod now

Winkler made some 3V knives once. Unfortunately, impossible to get at reasonable cost. AEB-L, Cruwear, 3V, I'd take any of these .... heck, even A2 is pretty stain resistant for me.

I had the opportunity to get one of the special 3V Belt knives from a dealer site but I had a belt knife already. I contacted Winkler if a person could order 3V and they said those were a special run for a dealer. For one of my most used knives I would definitely pay more for the upgrade to 3V plus it is so much better in the rust department.

For the breaching axes and tomahawks I would also be happy with 3V where some of the other steels I would be searching for used 80CRV2 as it has proven to take some serious abuse and keep going.

With Winkler doing some limited editions that i have only recently learned about but you/they would tell me they have always been doing limited knives i could see them doing “sprint” runs with a different steel now and then.
That said Winkler is very successful doing what they are doing. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke.

IIRC, one of the reasons WK uses 80crv2 is their in house heat treating. All of the 3V Winklers were sent out for HT. I don’t remember where, but that significantly limited the shops output for those batches.

Actually that Strike Force Winkler is starting to tug at my heart strings. Damn YouTube!

I rather didn’t like the sculpted multicolored handled but this I didn’t notice when i was there. I like a Maple handle.
Since I’m budget limited pending my wife’s retirement i will scrimp and save for at least one WK a year. So it’s gotta be special.
