Cruwear ...Anyone speculate on what would be the best replacement steel Winkler could use if 80crv2 was to become unavailable? Just a hypothetical.
Also not trying to complicate maters for Daniel and change “tradition” but is there a steel any of us Winkler fans would love to see in one of his blades.
I would be surprised if this topic hasn’t already been come up but i haven’t seen a thread on it?
FWIW Winkler knives don't have any sort of blade coating. The blades are darkened using a black oxide concentrate from Caswell Plating. Its just an etchant thats a mix of phosphoric acid, selenious acid, nitric acid and copper that turns the blade black by creating a dark oxidation layer.CPM 3V with a good heat treat continues to be one of my favorites for an outdoor blade. It's not the latest and greatest, but does a lot of things very well. And I'd be just fine with Winkler ditching the blade coating and going to a low-reflectivity sandblasted finish. Offer a DLC version for the dudes who need to be extra stealthy.

What I like about my Winkler is thougness/resistance to chipping and how easy it is to sharpen or just strop back to sharpness. Therefore, 14c28n or something similar for same-ish thoughness and ease of sharpening, with the added bonus of beeing almost stainless. But I would miss the patina..Anyone speculate on what would be the best replacement steel Winkler could use if 80crv2 was to become unavailable? Just a hypothetical.

That's really nice! This Everycarry has been on my list for quite some time now; it arrived Tuesday. It is similar in size to the SD2 and made with tried and true 80CrV2.![]()
IIRC, one of the reasons WK uses 80crv2 is their in house heat treating. All of the 3V Winklers were sent out for HT. I don’t remember where, but that significantly limited the shops output for those batches.Winkler made some 3V knives once. Unfortunately, impossible to get at reasonable cost. AEB-L, Cruwear, 3V, I'd take any of these .... heck, even A2 is pretty stain resistant for me.

Compared to my Huntsman. 2025 is a Stout knife.
You can feel the weight/heft.
