Somehow this thread has flew under my radar. I met Mr. Winkler at the BLADE 99 show, and talked to him quite a bit, but all he done (albeit well) then was the forged custom "period knives".
Fast forward-the Winkler Knives II line appeared and I was interested. I picked up a Winkler Operator in rubber (ordering through the factory for LE discount) in 2016ish and it took about 10 or 12 weeks. I chose to pick it up in person at their shop in Boone (about an hour from me) and went through Kaela, a long-time office person. I got to wait in a hallway and look at the "Last of the Mohichans" stuff and several models displayed (although not handling them.) For any LOTM fan, they have a breathtaking shadow box and drawing/painting of Magua (Wes Studi) in their showroom. Daniel was in and out as I waited and while I would immensely enjoy talking with him, I didn't want to be "that guy" and simply gave him a smile, nod, and "Sir..." as he passed by me, respecting that he is a busy man and time is money. I have spoken with him before at BLADE and he is always amiable.
The operator became my primary outdoor knife. I was not crazy about the thick belly profile on most of the bigger knives, so I hadn't picked anything bigger up. A while back I see that they had added a "drop point" option to the Crusher series of knives. Now that caught my attention.
I called back and spoke with Kaela again to start another order. First I found that they have moved from Boone to Foscoe, which is on the other side of the county, but closer to me. Then I found that they have severely curtailed rubber as an option for handles. The Drop Point Crusher was not available in rubber. I held off ordering because of that. A couple weeks later, myself and a best friend (also a Winkler fan and owner of several) visited Duncan's Guns/Ridgerunner Blades in North Wilkesboro and I tried all forms of Drop Point Crusher they had and picked up one at retail (deciding that I didn't want to wait 12-16 weeks even though they would graciously given me the LE discount through the company). My buddy picked up a Contingency the same day, and the guy in line in front of us picked up a Utility (three Winklers rang up in 10 minutes-a good morning for Noah!)
I did have to pick up a Sheath Accessory Kit and while I could have easily ordered online, I decided to drive up and get it from the company. I had spoke to Karen (Daniel's wife) by phone this time and she helped me in the office. The new location is very nice and they do have a "showroom" style common area, with the LOTM stuff visible. Again, Mr. Winkler was passing through with what I believe were potential employees so again I gave him the polite "Sir..." and nod and left it at that. Karen was very helpful.
One clarification regarding sheaths. While I do think I read once that their sheaths were made by an outside vendor, I read constantly about Karen making the sheaths. I mentioned this to her and she clarified that she only does the sheaths to the custom pieces-NOT the WKII line. I was a little embarrassed at my misunderstanding as you can see I am somewhat familiar with the company. The WKII sheaths are made by a "high quality holster maker" (and I feel like I read which one somewhere on this forum or another once) but I don't know which one off hand.
