Anybody miss Vampire Gerbil posting here?

I have a 700MHz Gateway desktop with 384MB RAM and a 20GB HD that is doing nothing. I'd be happy to give it to someone who needed it.

It's a great box and still runs like a champ. Right now it has Windows XP Pro on it.

Does he still need a computer?

Also, who is VG, and what is the story...if I may ask? If it's too personal I understand.

By the way, I'm a network analyst for a living. I work on computers, servers and networks. I can pretty much handle whatever would need done with this. Anything you throw at me. I'm glad to help if I can.

Email or Instant Message me if I can be of assistance :)

Thanks,
FoM

FoM,

That sounds like it may be the way to go until VG gets back on his feet. He needs to get back on the forum. It would definitely bring his spirits up. Anyone else think this is a good idea? :D Let's get this unit to VG and maybe later on we can get him the mini-Mac. Money is very tight right now and I'd rather have VG up and running than fart around with what we should get him.

FoM,

VG is Vampire Gerbil, Old time Regular and Moderator here at BFC.
Back in October of last year his wife was killed in a car crash. Two weeks later he was in a coma, but survived.

The start of the story is here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=318314&highlight=Vampire+Gerbil

We took up a collection to get him through the funeral expenses and to help him while he recuperates.

That thread is here:
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=324696&highlight=Vampire+Gerbil

This is a thread started by his daughter Alisha who has been taking care of him, she's 19.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=321360&highlight=Vampire+Gerbil

You can also do a search of his name and read some of his posts from before Oct. 2004 to get an idea of who VG is. Or better yet view his website.

Yes, at this moment he still needs a computer and if you've got one ready to ship I'll email you his mailing info. If you need shipping costs, just say the word.

Everyone that has posted on these threads knows and misses Vampire Gerbil and wants him back and posting ASAP. We need to see him here and he needs to be here. You can rest assured that your help is going to a good cause.

add the fifty I offered a couple pages back would put us at 200.00 if we get enough guys to go this route let me know where it goes and I will send it asap...
we only need six more guys at fifty.... :)

I agree about getting him online quick.... it should be good for him

I'll tell ya what...

I'll clean this computer up a bit. It was actually wiped out clean a month ago and reloaded with XP Pro and some good free software. AVG Antivirus, Open Office, etc.

Where am I shipping it to? I'll get a box from work tomorrow if I can and get this thing out on Friday if all is well.

Email me the details if you don't want to post it and i'll get it going.

Also, I enjoy helping when I can, so I don't want anything in return for this. Seriously. Please lets just keep it that way. Pay it forward! :)

tallpaul, I noticed that you're in Canton. I'm in Cuyahoga Falls. If I need some help with this I'll shoot you an email. I'm probably only like 20 mins away from you.

Cool,
Fisher of Men

Fisher of Men u are awesome... i thank you bunches for what u are willing to do for someone u haven't even met on here.. Just goes to show that there are wonderful people here.. :D

Well, My offer of an old 600mhz machine is still open. The only reason it hasn't shipped yet is that I was waiting to hear if Parfive came up with something as he's so close. There would be a small delay as I'd need to figure out how to securely pack it. If nothing else works out, I could even drive it up to him, but not until the weekend of the 19th. I also have a 17" Sony monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. so it could be a slow, but turn key solution.

I didn't realize that VG was a Mac guy. If we can get enough other folks to kick in, I'd throw in $50.00 just to make this easier. If VG was using an old Mac, it would have had an ADB (Apple proprietary) mouse and keyboard. The new MAcs only use USB for these connections.

I was gonna e-mail and ask ya where you were... somebody said VG uses aol maybe we can get that on there too

And Susie you would be surprised how many have helped and to what degree already- it is indeed a great group.. and we aren't done yet
;)

I'll put the newest version of AOL on there also. I saw he uses ICQ too so I already loaded that.

I'm running back and forth between this computer and the other desk :)

I'll keep ya posted.

Well folks... I'm off to bed. It's 11:50pm here. The computer is all set and ready to be boxed up and shipped.

I just need to get a box from work tomorrow if I can find one and then find out where it's being shipped to. I assume to Nevada somewhere. Funny thing is I actually drove through Pahrump Nevada in 1995 going to California. I thought...wow this is a small town kinda neat. Never thought 10 years later I may be sending something there. I know one thing. It's HOT there.

Ok.....now I'm rambling. Anyway.... tallpaul, keep an eye out for a box in case I can't find one tomorrow. The tower is 19" tall, 17" deep, and 7" wide. I think I can get a box. I'll let you know :)

Night,
FoM

I figured you guys would take care of the computer...so I sent V.G. some $ to take care of the connection fees a couple of days ago.

FoM, If you knew V.G. you would know you were doing a good thing.

I don't even need to know him. I can just tell he's a good guy. Plus, I would never wish what he has gone through on anyone. That has got to be the toughtest thing ever.

I'm glad we are all able to pitch in. I'll be praying for him.

May God Bless you all!

One thing I forgot. Does anyone know if VG uses Dial-up or Broadband?

Right now the computer is set up with a network card for broadband. I can through a modem in it if I have one to be used for dial-up if needed.

Thanks,
Fisher of Men:D

Since this seems a much better offer than my old 8088 machine, may I offer to kick in some shipping costs? Fisher, if you want, email or PM me.

From what I am reading here, this is pretty much a done deal. I will not persue the CPU at work any more. Are we still collecting money and if so who is the recipient?

sounds like a reasonable question to me. Who should we send this to?
Anyone living near VG or someone who actually knows him?

Fisher of Men, I emailed you yesterday with VG's contact information.
I'm pretty sure it was made public on another thread so I have no problem posting it here.

The computer and any contributions should go directly to:

David Gittleman
2360 South Xenia Ave.
Pahrump, NV 89048

My emailed is listed here so you can contact if you need to.

VG uses a wireless DSL conection to AOL 3.0.

PhilL,

I never got the email. Thanks for the info though.

I hope it's cool that I installed AOL 9.0 Optimized.

When you say wireless, you mean he's connected via dish but has a cord connected to the computer, or he's got wireless in his home?

I happen to have a spare wireless card that I can put in the desktop if needed.

Also, does someone have a monitor that they can send to him? I doubt that the one he has will connect to a PC without a special adapter.

Let me know.

Thanks,
Fisher of Men

P.S. - Got a box to ship it in. It will be arriving in a Cisco Systems box. :)

Phil L - If you were here I'd hit you, and then take you for a beer at Sonny's...oops, wait a minute...they don't have any beer, do they?!!

I am strapped as well, but can contribute a little. Is VG cool with folks just sending checks to that address? Maybe paypal would be better?
