AR M4 style rifle, which one?

Thank god i live in Aus...
I lock my doors and windows for home defence
And i have my Kukri under my bed
Here you must have a safe for your single shot rifle(no handguns or semi/auto weapons allowed) and it must have a separate lockable safe built in for the ammo...youd be dead before you got the key out lol

Balance the big, heavy safe, precipitously next to your bed. A thin piece of string, tied from the wall (head board etc.) to the safe is used to hold the safe at the balance point.

When the bad guy comes at you, all you need do is break the string and the safe will crush him.

Yeah but you can drop a hog or razorbacks in Aus with a bolt action with a mag....as long as your a good shot and a quick reloader.
Doesnt it take a bit of the skill out of it?..no offence
I prefer to go with a bit of the sniper feel myself.

We use it for whatever we want Matthew. We can buy one or ten. We can shoot them or not shoot them. Some people, whom wish not to have one, don't have to.

Want to know why? That's right. We still believe that God, not men gives us our rights. Sure, we fight for it daily and I hope my kids will continue the fight when I am gone but it's a fight worth fighting for.

I hope I never see America become like your country. Willing giving up rights that others gave their lives for. That's hot how I want to honor those brave men who died for me.

If you and your countrymen are happy with only bolt action rifles that's nice. But what if your country decides you can no longer have them. What will you do Matthew?

I understand both sides of the coin..one that if every man is armed there is less chance others will try to rob/attack etc them. And the otherside that if nobody has a gun then the same goes..
We have had a minimal amount of massacre shootings compared to America and the Goventment canned Auto and Semi Auto weapons due to the fact that less would have been killed if the idiots firing had bolt action only.
Be very careful attacking a country somebody loves....
I havent given up shit...i am not bagging americas rights to have a gun, i just dont see the need to own a hig powered automatic weapon for any purpose except to mow down large groups of meat.
Many Aussies died in war and we treated ours the same way you do yours...after WW2 we loved them and after veitnam we bagged them(not something we are proud of).

I've been there twice. Great place. I never felt my life was in danger. What makes you think Americans walk around in fear?

I never "attacked" or "bagged" your country (re-read my post). I simply pointed out what your people allowed your government to do. If you agree with the disarming of your fellow countrymen then that's your right. I think it's a big mistake.

The reason we are the greatest country is more people from other countries want to live here than any other country. Yours is a fine country but facts are facts.

By the way. If you feel so safe in your country why do you lock your doors and windows at night and keep a Kukri under your bed?

I also know most men in your country are jealous of the weapons we have and you can't own. That's understandable. You would like to have an M4 too. You know you do. It's okay. One day when you come here I will let you shoot one of mine. I'll even take a picture of you holding and shooting it so you can show it to your mates back home.

Until then you will just have to run the bolt!

And we havent been disarmed, anybody can own a rifle as long as you belong to a gun club or have permission to shoot on a property/station/farm.
And you must own a gun cabinet and have a police clearance
Most people with auto's waste a shit load of ammo to drop a target(present company excluded of course)
To be totally honest i have never been overly interested in guns
But i appreciate the offer

imho it takes more skill to kill one with a M4 or AK vs a remington 700 .30-'06 with a 4-12X scope at 300 yards off a feeder, thats pretty easy.

I think you're under the impression we are discussing the actual Military issue M4's... If I'm not mistaken, the one's refered to in this thread are the cilvilian, semi-auto style... Or at least in my state, Washington, full autos are totally forbidden for anyone but LEO's and active duty military (and manufacturers.)
And I don't believe there is a state in the USA that allows hunting with a full auto gun of any kind (though I'm not sure about the new auto-shotguns coming out.)... For the most part, these are simply "fun" guns to have, that could act as personal defense tools if needed... Otherwise, they get the most official use in sporting competitions...
And 5.56/.223 isn't recommended much for hunting more than varmits...
The AK, however, with the 5 round mag, can be an effective deer gun, and maybe pig, though I don't know that for sure... And I wouldn't want to go hog hunting with the bolt action - those suckers can be fast and brutal!

Now... as to the AR question... I'll still stick with my SIG 556! Hasn't failed me yet! :D

You may not have as many school shootings as we have had, but its quite clear that your gun ban isn't having its intended effect.

From the Australian Bureau of statistics and the Australian institute of criminology...

From the inception of the confiscation to mid 2000 the number are
-gun murders up 19%
-armed robbery up 69%
-home invasions up 21%

The simple fact is that gun crimes rose throughout Australia after guns were banned and have remained at or near these levels in the following years. In Sydney alone, robbery rates with guns rose 160% in 2001, more in the previous year.


This shouldn't be surprising since in every nation where guns have been banned, crime goes up. The same thing happens here in the states. Cities with the worst form of gun control have the worst crime.

Its the difference between being a citizen and a subject. So in the words of Ronnie Johns harden the f*** up Australia and take back your rights.

ya are right about hunting with full autos, game animals anyway, i dont think hogs or other vermin would be any problem though.

oh, and all my stuffs semi not full, i do have a bud who has a class 111 though and have played around with a surenuff M16 and a ingram MAC10 .45 a time or 2, i thought about trying to get a class 111 myself and right when i really started to get all the info together the prices on FA stuff shot thru the roof, when my bud got his class 111 IIRC MAC's were ~ $1K or so and M16's werent much more i have heard a M16 now can go fopr $10K(and up) thats just too much for me, its just not worth it, to me anyway, they are cool though, i dont know that a FA offers any real great advantages though unless ya are charged by 100 gangbangers, or in the MAC's case get into a firefight in a phone booth, one day we set up 8 cans on the ground about 30ft away and i emptied a clip (32 rounds IIRC, .45 ACP) outta the MAC and when the dust settled i hadnt hit a damned thing, nothing, sure looked neat though, lol, if ya havent ever shot one of those things ya wouldnt believe how fast they fire, 1100 RPM IIRC, ya can empty the clip in less than 2 seconds, anyway its pretty cool looking lol, not very practical though, not unless ya got a lotta practice with the thing, and then as fast as it shoots ya would have to have some jack just for ammo lol.

sadly my bud sold his stuff he was out of work and needed the $$, he made a helluva profit on it though, IIRC he got $3K for the MAC.

In regards to rise in crime, i myself think its more due to the boom then depression we just had.
All the massacres we have had were done with semi automatics.
Hell i used to own a few, and the where perfect for shooting roos from the back of a motor bike when chasing them...fuck reloading..

I dont see how stopping people from owning semiautos , stops them from owning a gun and shooting a home intruder..or anybody else for that matter, i believe the decision was based on preventing the psychos from killing large groups in public places before they can be disarmed...not perfect but so far so good.
I do admit a semi auto M4 would be cool though
 
I'd look for a GM Saginaw from a Mexican Drug Dealer. It will be mil-spec, mil issue as a lend lease rifle to Central America - where most of the full auto stuff comes from. Not Texas.

Or, realistically, shop for any available AR you can reasonably afford - which is the major premise to any discussion since last November. Mil Spec or not, an AR in the hand is better than cash when you need it - the real reason the OP started the thread. Buying a budget AR at half the price is a far better solution to wanting one with only half the cash.

As for mil spec standards, the GM Saginaw I used in basic, and the FN I carried to the storage rack on deployment were equally certified and capable. I stlll preferred to have a HK 91 for real power and reliability - it would literally eat handfuls of wet gravel and still shoot. I have little regard for a weapon that can't tolerate dusty conditions but nonetheless is the highest quality made.

I also question the wisdom of shopping for parts and assembling same. Unless you're a trained armorer and practicing gunsmith, you don't know how the tolerance stack of different makers will affect the functioning and accuracy of the final result. It will be what it is, a bunch of bling name parts thrown together. I see customers do that daily with the 350 chevy equally knowledgeable and with equal results - they get to do it again until they get it right. It's not a job for Everyday Joe. And he's just lucky it starts and runs.

Much less apply for an FFL? Why double your cost to get one gun out of it?

After 22 years USAR I've seen soldiers break AR's from every mil spec maker out there. It's an arbitrary standard to ensure a minimum, not the highest or best practice. Often, good makers in many industries have to derate their practice to meet a government "minimum standard" because manufacturing techniques progress much faster than outdated bureaucratic codes. Mil spec does literally that - and has no place in the process of a civilian purchase. After all , you aren't necessarily cutting every possible corner to get a bid awarded - which is what mil spec attempts to prevent, a cheap piece of junk becoming issue.

How that got to be a misinterpreted as a goal to strive for only comes to those who don't know how much better things can be - and considering how many foreign designs the military uses, developed under a foreign standard, should make you wonder. A lot.

I agree that your break-barrel, single shot 12Ga. will kill an intruder whose broken into your home to pillage, rape and murder. The nice thing about the single shot in this sort of circumstance is; that after you've killed the intruder, it makes a fine club to swing at the dead guys four friends before the shoot you 6 times with THEIR own, illegal, semi-auto hand gun and pump Remington 870's.

"Whats nice?" about that, you might ask????

Well, you won't have to watch the pillaging, rape and murder of the wife and kids because you'll be dead!!:thumbup::thumbup:
