Are Spyderco Prices becoming unreachable?

There is a book I recommend everyone read and then read again. Its titled Basic Economics by Thomas Sowell. Its all about economics both small and large scale.
I second this great recommendation and will take it one step further. Get the audiobook. It’s a fantastic way to absorb this dude’s genius, while driving, mowing the grass, etc. I’ve listened to this audiobook several times. It never gets old.

If you look at Benchmade, you know Spyderco is not alone. I wouldn't complain, I would just stop buying if I think the prices are too high.

I lol at this thread right now since there are amazing Spyderco sales going on right now at nearly every knife retailer for very reachable prices
There was some amazing deals this weekend. I bought 3 knives at great low prices.

Did you score any?

Will you LOL on January 2023 when the prices increase again?

Did anyone catch any "great deals" from this flash sale Spyderco held yesterday?

If so, what did you score? Prices paid and pics, please, or it didn't happen. ;)

I was eyeing the Yojumbo for $90, to keep from eating Ramen I passed.

Also the Para 2 camo for i think $58 for a bro in law but I did not buy either

I didn't score any since I've spent way too much on knives already this year. I won't lol when prices go up, but will try and be patient until the next black Friday :) I was also thinking if prices are becoming too attainable for someone the used market can have some good deals too

Saw this thread pop up and if anyone of you want to be disappointed in yourself like I am, knife center was killing it with a spyderco sale on Monday. Everything 44% off msrp. Wanted to pick up a brand swayback for a cool $253 but I already blew my load on some other unneeded cutlery. Life is cruel sometimes

Eh, everything is more expensive. I find I’m just more selective with my Spyderco purchases. I make sure it’s a knife I really want and buy fewer, but I love their knives and still feel they are worth the price.

They just forgot how to make a business... kinda charity for expensive suppliers, greedy distributors, non-competitive subcontractors... they care about everybody, but not the clients. I do not care.

So I pay a bit of a premium living on the other side of the planet, not too many importers, a generally pretty rough exchange rate, and a legal regime that some days wouldn't find it's own backside with a map and team of guides. That being said. Do I find value in buying spydercos? Last three knives are Spyderco lil'native slippit, native salt and (not counting my LM Surge) Caribbean wharny. So for me, yeah, they are still worth the price, when compared to everything else. I think my BM bugout might have been bought in that time frame as well, but frankly, they get the same criticism. If you want to always buy a 100$ knife, then recognize that 100$ doesn't go as far as it did when you were a kid. Also, having never lived in the US and always having retail price also fluctuate based on the dollar (bought my BM grip when the CAD was at a "respectable" $0.75, so got it at a bargain) it adds a layer into the "value" equation. Spyderco pushes the market forward, seems to do right by as many folks as they can, listens and moves about as fast as any company that size can, and overall has something for almost everyone. So yeah, they have to make compromises to keep their lower end where it is, but so does every other company, and I don't see many companies trying to hit as many sectors as they do. Almost every other company, and frankly in every industry every marketing person will tell you, target your market. Spyderco doesn't play by that game. They make the knives they can make, and overall I think that for what you get, you are spending the money on a knife, not marketing fluff.

Yet you care enough to post.
So, fill me in on the charity you speak of?

What of the vogue US designers with catchy business names drop shipping Chinese imports with their names on them?
Is that the other side of “how to make a business?”

I agree with the OP.

The reality is this: none of us posting here need another knife. We might try to justify our next purchase as a need, but really we just like knives. Nor do we need some magical super steel or exotic handles-- the supersteel twenty years ago is in the bargain bin today. Not that it's practically inferior mind you, only a scientist with advanced testing equipment could spot the difference, it's just not the latest cool thing the advertisers tell us we need to buy.

So we buy because we want to, taking ever more money from wallets that are growing increasingly thinner. I am not even close to broke. I could buy one of every knife in the spyderco catalog and not notice the difference. Yet I am debating over a couple different models and trying to justify buying anything at all at these prices. For someone struggling right now, someone looking for a knife as a tool they need instead if a toy to play with, these prices are simply absurd. Spyderco has clearly decided to trade on (and exploit) their name rather than striving to offer the best knife for the money.

And that's okay.

Every year the price of Spydercos go up. I understand a little bump here and there.

With the new LW Lil Temperance at $176 and the Stretch 2XL cruwear at $285 Im thinking many people, my self included, will not be able to afford these knives anymore.

Spyderco is my favorite knife manufacturer and I hope they are not pricing themselves out of bussiness.

Also I have to mention I think theres a problem with Quality Control with knives being put out for sale.

I have had a few that I fixed myself, but if the price keeps going up, I will return every single one that is not perfect.

What does everyone else think?
I bought my first Spyderco when they were sold to knife stores who stamped their name on the knife. The knife public did not think much of Spyderco knives especially since the early ones were serretted and had that big hole in them. Gradually they gained acceptance in the knife world and I have been buying them since to collect. I have over 100 knives with most as Spydercos, ZT and Microtech. While I have a nice sized collection of Spydercos, I never carry them. I carry serious self defense knives, mostly my ZT 300 or similar. I never was in a situation when I needed to have a knife on me to cut rope or string or anything while outside the house. i mostly carried guns up until recently. Just never had to use a knife to do anything but look good in one of my display cases.

I stopped buying Spyderco knives because they are now pricing them mainly on their name since you can get just as good knives for much less. Spyderco caters to knife collectors more than I think people realize. They offer different versions, different scales, etc. that make no difference in self defense or any other use but to look nice. So they are off my list and the cause to switch over to collecting guitars instead. A lot more expensive up to $5K for some but I can play music on them every day and easy to sell locally when I get tired of them.

I was lucky enough to get the new Manix 2 15V last week for $157.50. The Manix 2 always has a very good price on sprints and exclusives.

Fit and finish looked perfect, action good. It did have a tiny bit of side to side blade play, but a slight tightening of the pivot fixed that, not a big deal for me.
I noticed a loose rattle when laying the knife down on the table but never gave it much thought. Last night I see that the lanyard tube on the clip side is not tight against the scales. It can be "pried" apart with a finger. The lanyard tube is the only thing holding the knife together on the tail end.

I wont send it back since its a sprint run, maybe buy some after market scales.

Im not here to bash Spyderco, they are my favorite knives, but if you keep raising the price, the knives should arrive in perfect condition

Always wanted a Spyderco and still do but I always feel blade play in the compression lock. For that reason the price seems steep
