Are you "the knife guy"?

At work no, but my shift is odd and I don't see most of the department. I have sold a blade or two to our vendors tho. Definitely the guy of the family, tho my father in law is a close second.

I am one as well. Though I try to keep my purchases around $50 ( my wife would lose her mind if I got one more expensive than that) I'm still an outlier around here. I also collect antique shaving razors though, so I'm m known for enjoying all things sharp. Also, while studying for culinary school, I'm known to be the guy that has the sharpest cooking knives around. It's been a great outlet for my ptsd and anxiety to sit and sharpen and strop blades.

Great point on the therapeutic aspect of stropping and sharpening! I will take a couple each night before bed and just refine those edges.......mellows my wired butt right out! What's better than a clean edge silently push cutting the whole length of phone book paper??
I'm at different supply houses each day for HVAC parts and always get asked to see which blade, or blades are in my pocket!
Joe

Yup me and my uncle
I dont get asked too often for advice or to work on a knife tho

mostly because everyone I know arent very big on knives haha
sadness...

At my place of work I am, interestingly in my job I work alongside farmers, many of whom are hunters and most would call themselves "knife guys", with 250-300 clients I have seen 2 pocket clips and probably only 20-30 farmers who would always have a knife, or multi-tool on them. Given retail pricing in New Zealand and the local hunting stores lust for Gerbers there really isn't much higher end stuff around. Family wise my brother is pretty keen, father in law loves his opinels and a Case stockman. My late father was a shocker, for a man that butchered all the meat for our and a few other families I can't ever remember a knife being sharp - or clean for that matter :-)

I'm the knife guy everywhere I go. I'm the gun guy too, but that gets used much less often. I'm also the motorcycle guy, but I don't let nobody ride my bike. The only other asses that's been on it have been blood related family asses.

I'm the knife guy at work, although it's not a title I am fond of. It's often difficult to convey the reason I collect knives and why I need more than one that costs over 30.00. It goes something like this.

Coworker: Hey, can you cut this open?
Me: Sure. (slice)
Coworker: Can I see your knife?
Me: Sure. (Hands it over)
Coworker: I really like this. How much does it cost? I'm going to Wal-Mart tonight.
Me: Uh, they don't sell them at Wal-Mart. The one you're holding is around 300.00.
Coworker: No Way! I wouldn't pay that for a knife. I could buy 10 knives at Wal-Mart for that.

And it begins.........

At the rural place I work 90% of the men at least has a SAK the ladies even has SAK' s and a Few Leeks.

But I am the knife guy cause I carry 3 slipjoints and a locking folder daily not counting a small baby folder inside my phone case and Mora in my backpack.

It's all in the approach - they just can't relate, but you can make it relatable with analogies. I just say something like "You know how some people have $300 shoes, $300 watches, or $300 purses? I put that money towards my pocket knives. It's just my thing that I spend more than is necessary on." People generally understand when given a little perspective.

You have your own personal justifications, like appreciating the precise assembly, the blade steel, the designer, etc - they aren't likely to understand why that equates to a 2900% increase in value because they value different things. I used to try to get people to understand using such terms, but it really just comes down to comparing it to a nice Coach bag or Oakley sunglasses or some other luxury good (because, let's face it, a $300 knife is a luxury good regardless of the working-man marketing it might have behind it)

Im the knife guy to my family and friends. It gets lonely. Im also the knife nut to some, meaning the few who ask how much does that one cost end up thinking im crazy.

Yes, in fact I'm currently arranging a charity knife sharpening event at work (me sharpening colleagues knives - mostly kitchen).

What I find interesting in this thread is that those saying yes are often 'the guy' for other things, shooting, bikes, gear etc; this is the same for me. It is as if there are those who are just generally more practical people who 'do stuff' with various tools, and if you are good at these things, people notice you doing them and then ask you.

I guess I am, but none of my friends gives a rat's ***, so it never comes to much. When it comes to corrupting my grandson, though, I'm the knife guy (and the gum guy, and the gummi bears guy).

No, I'm not "the knife guy," because I'm a high school teacher, and I mostly keep it on the down-low. I carry my SAK every day, and even that knife pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable in a school. Anything other than a small pocket knife could be considered a weapon. Making and collecting knives exists in a completely different universe than most academic people occupy.

I teach in an arts school, though, so occasionally my students find out that I make knives, and they love it. These are kids who spend hours every day painting, dancing, singing, playing the flute, etc. They appreciate the creativity and craftsmanship (even though most of my knives are less than impressive).

Yes, I'm the knife guy. But then, in most social contexts (see location), I'm also "The American."

I just assumed almost everyone at blade forums was the knife guy in their village[emoji2]

So, yes.

Agree, well said.

I'm the "when the zombies come, I'm coming to your house" guy.

I'm also this....

Hah, the owner told me today to keep the knives to 4" and under. Yeah, Im that guy.

My boss gave me a cheepo butterfly knife. Apparently it was confiscated off an employee years ago haha. He also said the same thing.. try to keep em 'smaller' lol.

I have sold several knives to my coworkers ...

Me too :D its how I funded a few of my purchases. They also come back to me every time they need them sharpened lol

Not even 10 min before I started reading this thread I opened a package with my ZT0562 and one of the guys in the office was like 'settle down Crocodile Dundee'. I looked over at him and said 'That's not a knife', then proceeded to remove my BK5 from my EDC bag. He nearly pooped in his pants :D

Most people know me as a gun guy who always has a knife on him. But lets face it, the average person knows nothing and can appreciate little about a quality-made knife. Most of the knives "normal" people own come from WalMart so the notion of paying $100+ for a knife is absurd to them when their reference point is $2
I rarely discuss the costs with them and let them appreciate a quality, good looking knife.

I'm definitely that guy and I embrace it. It's fun showing my friends my new knives and occasionally they actually purchase one themselves. I'm camping right now and every single person here with has a blade because of me:D. They all tell me I'm a bad influence. I enjoy the challenge and the ribbing. I love this forum because practically everyone here is that guy.

Nope.

I talk to a few people about it, like minded people who are into the hobby.

Otherwise I just keep it to myself.

It's something I really enjoy, but talking about it with people who clearly don't get it doesn't add to my enjoyment.
