Are you "the knife guy"?

No, I'm not "the knife guy," because I'm a high school teacher, and I mostly keep it on the down-low. I carry my SAK every day, and even that knife pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable in a school. Anything other than a small pocket knife could be considered a weapon. Making and collecting knives exists in a completely different universe than most academic people occupy.

I am under similar work place safety perception constraints. I find this mildly amusing as I have carried a pocket knife for 40 plus years. I think that if I was going to hurt anyone, it would have happened long ago. I see a SAK as a tool, the public often sees a weapon. Although I actually know some women in responsible work positions that carry a key ring knife for self protection. It's all about perception I suppose.

I would be the knife guy if I wasn't also the bicycle, book, science, film, gun, sports car, travel, artist, foodie, pilot guy. When you have enough interests, it all starts to average out.

No. My workplace isn't knife friendly, so it's not a topic that comes up. The only people who know I am into knives are my wife and my two adult nephews. To the nephews I'm more the "sharpening guy" than the knife guy.

He'll, I was "the knife guy" when I was 5. Still carries on to this day. About the only time it comes up though is a coworker looking for a replacement after ruining/losing theirs or when a family member wants their kitchen knives sharpened.

I have at least managed to talk just about everyone out of using the electric counter top sharpeners.

I'm the knife guy, the gun guy, the flashlight guy, the multi-tool guy, the watch guy, the guitar guy, and the cigar guy. Some would say I'm that smart guy, but I would never openly admit to that. Hehe..

I work as an archaeologist, and so whenever something needs cut, someone on the crew will call me over. None of them quite fully understand the appeal, but, we're all outdoors people and I've convinced a few of them on solid camping/bushcraft knives.

So I guess that makes you... That Guy?

Haha, I can relate. I'm an archaeologist down in Houston and I've given away knives to crew members a few times.

I'm part of a small volunteer fire department and a fair number of them carry knives. However i am the knife guy on the department as I am the only one that has their knife sharp enough to easily shave arm hair. Everyone elses are varying degrees of dull to around blunted to uselessness. Offering to sharpen thier knives up for them doesnt appeal to them as they just say they would cut thier fingers off with it.

Yeah, I guess I am the "knife guy". I just started a new job doing 3D printing stuff, and we use knives all the time for various purposes; from cutting tape to zip ties to scoring MDF. It took a few days to get to know the guys, but I've heard "Hey you're that guy that sharpened my knife, right?" from more than one person ;) My friend that put in a good word for me had brought me a few blades to sharpen from the shop and quite frankly, putting a wicked edge on those blades for my now-co-workers probably helped me land the position! I have been carrying a different knife every day this week and have at least another two weeks of knives to go through....
The guys get a kick out of seeing what I'm carrying every day and save for one dude with a mini-grip I hope to kick all those CRKT blades and box cutters out of their pockets in due time. Next step is to sharpen up the shop scissors and a few chisels when I get the time. I'm sure everyone would appreciate those tools working just that much better, and I want to demonstrate that it isn't some "mystical black art" type thing that most people make it out to be. Everyone that uses any tool should know how to maintain said tool, it not only increases the value but will help you use it more efficiently every time and save money, assuming you will need to take it to a third party or replace it when it needs work.
So far the full size Spyderco Military has been hard to beat - light weight, cuts like a laser, ergonomics for days. Just grabbed a couple of Paramilitary 2's in S30V and a "blurple" in S110v and they ain't no slouch either. The larger handle on the Millie just fits my hands better (I can palm a basketball) and I'll probably grab a 52100 Military when it drops, force a patina and use it hard! I haven't really disclosed how much these things cost.... my plan on the job is to keep lending my knives out when requested, let the people around me appreciate the superiority of them, THEN make the case for why I'm carrying sprint run Spyderco's and limited edition M390 Benchmades from there.

One final note: My associate that carries an OD G10 mini-grip lives right next to the Benchmade factory (I live in Portland, OR) and we were chatting about taking a factory tour. God help me when I get some cash to blow and we follow through - I have been wanting an Infidel and the ability to fondle and hand pick one after a walk through will surely hurt my wallet more than I can prepare for!

Where I live, I'm "the knife guy" everywhere I go, even when I meet other people who carry knives.

definitely "knife guy" at work. I send all my purchases to work so they're always bringing me a box

At work I am. I supply and sharpened one coworker. At home my boys think it's weird if I don't have a knife on me.

Yeah, through family, every job, and friends i have always been the knife guy. I enjoy it though, especially when people come to me for info and advice on them. Its humbling, and ive gotten a few people to convert to nicer knives. The job Im at now they nicknamed me 'pocket knife' and sometimes its 'switch blade'. Which is a step up from 'sling blade' because they are Ohioans making fun of a Kentuckian.

I'm the knife guy in my friend group. My friend showed me his knife which he said was just like my Spyderco Delica 4. And I don't even recognize the brand..the handle was plastic. Not frn or anything on that level, just cheap, poorly machines plastic. It had a hole like Spyderco but it was oval, partially serrated. He said it cost him $5 and he was shocked when I told him my Delica was 10 times that. He said he doesn't know why I'd do that. But then again, this guy spends hundreds of dollars on records. Like first edition vinyls, which is cool and I enjoy music on vinyl as well, but I wouldn't spend that.

I honestly feel like no one in my town has a collection of knives. My neighbor saw my buck 110 and asked if I wanted his Pakistan made "look alikes". When I was about 18, I bought a Kershaw Blur in s30v my first knife with a steel other than 8cr13 or Aus8. And he took it and tried to cut through thick metal straps (securing a commercial sized oven to a pallet). It made me cringe. Now if people ask to borrow a knife, they get my Ontario rat 1. My beater and my most carried knife. Even more so than my paramilitary 2

Depending on the location, I'm known as the "knife guy", "knifeman", "knife nut", "bayo king" (due to having 200+ bayonets), and "that knife sharpening dude". I'm also the "the electro-etching guy", "the gardener" or "the green thumb", and "the medic" (EMT since 1990).

I've converted several dozen folks into carrying at least 1 knife just because I asked them a simple question... When ever they ask to borrow a knife or ask me to cut something, I say something on the order of

"Did you leave yours at home?"

Mostly. the reply is "No, I don't carry one." Although, occasionally, the individual might say "Yes." to which I reply,

"That's why you need to carry 2. :D"

If they say they don't have one, I'll say

"Well, see, you never know when you'll need one, like today. So you need to get at least 1 to carry. Best if you carry 2."
