Art Knife Invitational '09 ~ images/impressions

HI Bob,

You said "Dealers" have a distinct advantage over collectors because the cheat.

Really...you have difficulty understanding that? Do you need smaller words?

Ok, so I'll take away from this that you really don't know what you are talking about. :D

Thanks STeven for the answer. As an aside, one dealer already has a Ron Lake knife from the AKI 2009 show up for sale on his website.

Hi John,

Two of the three makers I was discussing are dead.

The person who passed along the information about the third maker is dead.

I suspect that you would know only 1 of the makers involved.

I could PM you with the information, but Kevin Jones would probably follow up just to make sure I wasn't discussing anyone in his collection. :D

As well, I seem to be the one of the few willing to name names.

Im going to wait for others to start "naming names".

Then again you do as Bob Recommends:
Pull names out of your xxx if you want.

You see Bob was at the show...He saw the Dealers doing this...Why doesn't he name names...because he knows they are the Collector/Dealer types.

John, take a closer look at the photos from the show.

All the information is out there...you just have to do the homework.

Now I can breathe a sigh of relief, having seen this message below, instead of tons of text that says nothing.

Soooo, let's get back to the AKI?

These two pictures, taken by my son Yohai, display the two most
exciting moments at the AKI.
I shall be using these two pictures on the opening pages of Phil Lobred's
section in my coming book "The World of Art Knives".

1. The show opens, collectors view the knives and have 3 hours to decide on
which knife to bid using their intent to purchase named and numbered slips...

AKI-2009_1.jpg

When the intent to purchase time is up, the knifemaker randomely picks a slip
from each box, revealing the selected buyer as seen here at S. R. Johnson’s
table. The two slips displayed beside each knife represent 1st and 2nd choice
names.

All the best,

Kevin,

I don't have to name names. I just wait for a nosy collector who can't stand not to know something to post the makers names.

Isn't that right Kevin. :D

Great idea, David, along with explaining, theoretically, how it's supposed to work.

Les , with all due respect , I give up , I won't go digging to complete your sentences , if you won't/can't cover your info with facts/names , why bother to post at all ? Or is it a ego " i know what some of you dont know" thing ?

Perhaps instead of asking the person to name dealer names , you could instead , " do your homework , the answer is out there "/

And no I cant see the pictures , they are blocked from where I am now , but I do look forward to seeing them when I get home tonight , as these folks really provide some class A photos of the people/knives at the shows....

back on topic:
How was the atmoshphere at the show ? Did the economy have any effect on attendance ?

I can't believe this post by Buddy has turned into such a disaster. There should be a way to spin off the hijack to its own thread.

Trying to get back on track, I want to say thanks for the excellent pictures and post about the show.

If anyone wants to see one of the Ron Lake folders from the AKI, one of the online purveyors just posted one for sale. The fixed price at the AKI was $15,000 - and now the price is $24,500. Great image, a must look.

Atmosphere was electric, and although a few collectors from past shows were not there, a bunch of new AKI collectors were there.....NO noticeable affect from the economy.

Les, I don't know what maker's names you are referring to and I certainly don't care.

Bob was invited to the AKI, paid to go and spent a large amount of money there. He has a concern with the way buyers were chosen so he stated it. I'm expect most here know you were not there, thus he was not referring to you in his statement regarding dealers. In addition, you do not know what was going on. So why don't you just drop it instead of ruining another good thread.

In the same vein of the current economy and shows, the Ohio Classic seemed very upbeat last weekend.
In fact, I was told by the promoter yesterday that attendance was up 14% over last year and quantity of knives sold was up 20%. So good news from both shows.

Thanks for the pictures Buddy and David. Hope to see more.

Congrats on your GOOD fortune Bob. It would be an extreme pleasure just to be there, see the knives and enjoy the hospitality.

By chance I happened to see the Lake on KnifePurveyor.com.

I'd like to thank everyone for the show commentary. I like to think that if I was drawing names I'd just ignore any "modified" tickets.

Could someone please scan a catalog and post it, or something?

Last, I find it interesting that at least a couple makers are showing more on their tables than they had at the Blade show.

1. If someone scans the catalog and posts it, I will inform Phil Lobred to initiate action.....the catalog is NOT public domain....it is a copyrighted work.....

2. What is so unusual about makers having more at the AKI than Blade? The Blade Show may be the largest and most important overall show in the world, but the AKI is where the buyers and sellers go to do business...serious business.

It's actually a desk knife/letter opener. All I can offer, but it's representative of the calibre. Julie (and Curt) sent this to me for the catalog.
