Art Knife Invitational '09 ~ images/impressions

I'm not sure I see trading tickets as a problem or as unfair. As far as I can tell the people attending aren't really invited, they request an invitation and are sent one. That's what I did and I was sent the invitation. (I didn't go due to my schedule) There are a finite number of tickets anyway. And, what about a collector that asks a friend to come along. The friend pays for his or her ticket (right to buy) and might not even care about knives but drops a ticket hoping to get picked so the friend can get the knife. Is that wrong? What about husband and wife attendees? That is two chances at a desired knife.

Unfair? There are some boxes that are loaded with 40 of the same name. I saw one name drawn seven times in a row out of the same box. Do you consider that fair?

I do. Let's face it, we are not dealing with a man/wife issue where two names are involved - we are dealing with a issue of mass manipulation of the rule.

EDIT: Nitpickers, please exit here>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Well, seven tickets in a row with the same name tells me that nobody else wanted that knife. And how do you know there are boxes with forty tickets with the same name? Did the "name" pay the others for their tickets or were they given to him or traded for other tickets?

Let me make an important point - a very important point.

I think the AKI and it's management is superb. Everything is first class.

I just see alot of people finding ways around the rules, with a need on behalf of the AKI to keep trying to close the loopholes. In my personal opinion, I think they try as hard as they can.

With respect to the point I made about seven names drawn, that name didn't come back to claim the knife, and there were more "other" names in the box, too. Not a case of no one wanting the knife.

The"name" just trades tickets to others. No one pays each other. If you were there, you would know all of this. But instead you nitpick.

EDIT: As to 40 names in a box, there were lots of people exchanging lots of tickets for an hour, so the 40 is obviously a guess - but again, you weren't there, were you?

Keep countering and nitpicking, I'll keep answering and knowing. EDIT: besides, this allows STeven to sit and watch, LOL

betzner, I'm not nitpicking. I guess I am only entitled to an opinion if I was there? What if I wasn't there and agreed with you about how unfair it is? Would you tell me to shut up because only people that attended know what they are talking about. C'mon now, were talking about what's fair.

What do you want me to do, Bob?

I had a great time, have a nice relationship with Harvey Dean, Dellana/Van, Julie/Curt, Larry Fuegen, Tim Hancock, S.R. Johnson, Wolfe Loerchner, Steve Rapp, J.W. Smith, Steve Schwarzer and Gray Taylor on the makers side, and many on the collector/dealer side.

Phil Lobred is one of my better friends....all I can do is witness what goes on there, AND here, and discuss it with Phil to see what his position is on it, and remind him of what we discussed come next AKI.

LAST year, the complaint from the makers and collectors was that the print for the names and numbers for the Intent to Bid tickets was too small, so it got upped two points.

Lotta people chiming in who have never been to the AKI and have no intention/motivation to attend the AKI, should I engage them as you are?

Waste of time, IMO....like wrestling with a pig. I can tell you the food was better this year, and atmosphere, while electric, was a bit more relaxed and "fun".

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

No question that you are entitled to an opinion. I haven't told you to shut up, nor would I. I've simply pointed out that your points, in my own opinion, are nitpicking. Had you read this entire thread, you would realize that the issue is one of following the AKI rules.

Rather than argue about how many tickets had one person's name on them, we should be discussing whether the rules were followed, and, plainly, they were not, creating a lack of equal opportunity in the drawings.

LOL, STeven, my last comment about your sitting and watching was absolute pure humor. It was like giving you a bye in the discussion. It was in no way a request for action, no way. I was laughing when I typed it, because you and I sometimes have the same kind of "fun" dueling. But your point is well taken about not bothering with the naysayers who have never really been there. I think at this point, you are absolutely right. I am wasting energy, and what braincells I still have left. So I am outta here unless something of substance becomes discussed.

Thank you for the images Buddy!!! VERY COOL STUFF! :D

I would sure like to make it to this show sometime. I know many refer to BLADE as THE show, and while in many respects it is... The AKI is the cream of the crop.

From a bystanders observation, it seems to me that Bob's issue is quite simple. He was playing by the rules and some (many?) in attendance were not... it's just human nature to be upset by that. Sure as hell can't fault you for that at all Bob, but have no idea how that could be fixed either.

STeven, you look leaner than you did in Montana.

AND he made out like a bandit!:cool:

One day I hope to go to this premier event, (who wouldn't?). It's not like it's across the continent for me either.

thank you, Steven.

I'm sure all of the above is true. Fortunately though, me and my one little ticket prevailed on this folding dagger by John W. Smith - a sole authorship piece of commanding size and beauty. The maker's execution shines everywhere you look on this knife. It wasn't the prettiest or most expensive piece on his table, but it was the one that spoke to me. Missed out on a beautiful mediterranean bowie by Rick Eaton and a small Michael Walker folder. There were a few others on my short list that I didn't drop for. I'll mention those later. Here's the folding dagger:

I love his checkerboard pearl patterns, and his black lip is always the best. That one is really a beauty, Buddy!

Wow...That is one sweet catch HTMD! Enjoy it. How big is "of commanding size"? I love that some of these art knives are "plus size" (more to fondle):D

Handle is 5 1/4 in., OAL is 9 1/8 in. It weighs 6.5 oz. So it's man-size, according to 'my attractive wife.' That means those pearl scales are huge and thick, more so than any others I've seen. That's what initially attracted me to the knife.

Bob - Sorry we didn't meet. Steven tried to make it happen but, like everybody else, we were caught up in the excitement. I could tell from a distance that you were enjoying yourself down at Julie Warenski-Erickson's table. What a treat!

Excellent score, Buddy! I am ALWAYS impressed when I handle a JWS knife and it's never a lightweight folder. Lot's to love.

(BTW, guys: Buddy and I shared a post years ago, and I commented about his "attractive wife" Laura. I meant it in appreciation, and he's enjoyed the opportunity to present her as such any time.) Please do. :)

So, what did Laura snag...??!!

Coop

OK, here is my contribution to awful photography. This one will eventually go to Coop for imaging, but since it's just out of the AKI, I am enjoying it a bit first. Hope you like the tiny images attached. California Dagger, blued steel handle with n/s wrap, huge amount of gold (some in relief), and lots of engraving, including the edges of the knife frame that are not ink contrasted. Very intricate engraving on sheath, blued frog.

And it's not a photgraphic illusion, the blade actually does, purposely, have some slight belly toward to point.
