Would it be better to warm it up in a pot beforehand or will throwing in some hot scrap steel work?

Either will work. You might even be able to hold a torch to the outside of the ammo can. Make sure you stir it up. The hot oil will pool on the surface making you think it's warmer than it is. Your target is ~135F. I have an electric turkey fryer full of canola. It doesn't have a nice latching lid like an ammo can, but it does have a lid and it just plugs in. A cheap coffee percolator might work (gonna try that). My friend has a stainless pipe with a base welded on and a bail - he just uses his big propane tip to heat the outside. We used to heat with a chunk of scrap steel, but that actually takes several passes and quite some time.

my neighbor came home with some new rims and tires for his f150, joking with him I yelled out "I wish i had some new rims"

suh-wheeeet!!
4 new tires on my Colorado ran me about $600 installed. Happy to have a little truck. :D

Thanks for the tip, almost 60 degrees (Celsius) seems pretty hot, I was planning for about 40 something...

the flash point for most veggie oils (canola recommended as it's the best-known) is in the ~400-450F range. You need to reduce the viscosity of the oil so it can convect heat away from the blade rapidly. You're coming down from ~1500F, so the difference of 40F in the oil makes little difference to the blade, but it makes a BIG difference to the oil which can thicken at only fridge temps. Engineered quenchants may work at room temps, but that's another ball of wax (puddle of oil?). The threads in the master sticky in the Shop Talk subforum are a great source for this sort of stuff.

Thank you, Jonny. That thing was bugging me, so I X'd out of the page....it was a very good deal, but I'm going to try and find some time for the knives I have, and trust that when I'm ready (and flush with cash) to buy another, the Exchange will provide. There are LOTS of good deals on there. I really need to stop looking at them for a while.

I hate it when good deals on Beckers pop up on the exchange...
Especially when I'm not really looking to buy another knife.
Why do I always look at the exchange!?....Whyyyyy!!!
:D Oh well, I always regretted getting rid of my 24. It'll be nice to have one again.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have found places online that make stencils for etching. But it would cost me around 60 bucks to get it made, and the stencil is reusable up to about 50 times depending on how you etch. But im trying to avoid spending 60 bucks on a little piece of plastic if i can. But for 60 they would make a logo similar to my avatar thats around .5" x 1" and that would be easy to fit on knives.... but again for now id like to see if i can make something that works first to avoid that price. But if i cant figure it out i might have to go that route.

Ill look into 3M vinyl, that sounds like it might work with spray adhesive. I wouldnt be able to make anything like the 60 dollar place or like 710 had made for me if im just cutting it out myself. it would be something plain like WW or something. But for now im just playing with the possibilities.

Thanks again fellas

Seriously...contact me. I'm friendly to Beckerheads and I don't bite too much. :)

Those prices are nuts, and I can get you some awesome stuff for VERY low cost...less than you buying a roll of vinyl.

Biggest snow storm this season for us, school was closed early. The road is covered and blankets of snow are falling out the sky FAST. Expecting 8-12 inches of snow and temps down to a low of 1 degrees.

I cant wait for spring.

As promised here are some pics of the Plasti-dip scales I did on my 15. Really digging it so far. Also included in the ugly saw blade knife I made. I plasti-dipped the paracord wrap and it is a much better handle now. The thing is so thin. As I said before... dont know how but it turned out to be a really good cutter for being fugly as sin.

Ok enough with the pictures. None the less the product seems to be pretty well suited for this application so far.

Snarking is fun, at times.

So it's 12:55 and I'm already two screwdrivers in. I been up since 0415 this morning, had to drive from Springfield to St. Louis, for a 0745 job. Got there and it ended up being two jobs so it was 4 hours instead of 2. Then on the way home from work I spun out on the highway on the ice and ended up sliding backwards down the 30' embankment on the side of the highway.

Holy balls!! Are you okay? Is your vehicle ok?

I'm fine... Well, now I'm great. Angel is fine. I was able to "aim" her so we didn't hit any of the light poles or other immovable objects. When I knew I was going for the side I did my best to line her up backwards to go down since that was the least likely way to roll. When I got to the bottom of the embankment there was an entrance ramp right there (the whole reason I had HIT the ice was cause I was trying to move over to let the cars entering the highway on without incident) so I spun Angel around and managed to get one of the wheels onto the asphalt. It was all over from there, a little rocking, some kitty litter, some flicking off the salt truck drivers that just drove past pointing at me, and I was out.

in FLORIDA??? You're screwed!

Is that the plasti-dip's natural texture, or did you do something to it? The 15 scales look great.
The only reason your little sawblade knife is ugly is that a concave clip on a blade that deep and short just looks weird. Turn it into a straight clip or dropped spine and I bet it will look better.

Holy Moly, glad you're ok!
Gonna brave the snow soon here too.

LMAO not Florida :D I live in Philadelphia. I hate Philadelphia LMAO. Im from Florida, and im buying land there to move back down there but i havent finished paying for the land yet. About another 2 years unfortunately.

I never even seen snow until i was 20 years old and i was stationed in Texas. Didnt see a lot then but it was enough to stick on the ground. Seen a lot in Michigan and Ohio though. Seen a lot in Korea too.

A lot lot of snow when i was in Korea... like this.....

The 15's scales were stippled and sanded prior to adding the rubber spray. Thats why the texture is the way it is. And that saw blade knife ended up having that point because of 1 part learning experience and 1 part drunken grinding. It originally looked like a Kephart style bushcraft/spear point type blade. Apply liberal amounts of whiskey, curiosity, and probably a million other reasons I have forgotten by now and BAM weird clip point. However it is functional ;)
