Punches to the head don't really seem to lay people out either, for that matter, unless it's a hook to the jaw, which works because it torques the neck, not because of any real damage to the head. If I'm in a real fight, as opposed to the MMA stuff I've done, why not go straight to the source? But a good shot to anywhere at the bottom of the ribcage will usually put virtually anyone on the ground (and possibly in the hospital, depending on where you land the hit). Even the big tough guys with massive abs to protect their stomachs don't tend to have much cushion on the sides. Joints, biceps, quads, calves, etc, are all good targets too. I've won several matches against guys that outweighed me by 50 pounds because I got them in the arms and legs so much they either couldn't hit back, or couldn't stand.

I can understand that your daughter doesn't like it. I wouldn't be surprised if mine don't either. But they're still going to have to learn. I'd rather they spend time doing something that they don't like and know how to defend themselves than the alternative. And I'd really rather have someone who DOESN'T like to fight learn how than someone who does. Don't want them ending up BEING bullies, ya know? If they like it, then learning the mental discipline and self-control is even more important.

i apparently learned early on to use elbows and open hand strikes. "farm boy style"... kids tended to not bother after a while. a few idiots tried the gang up on me trick. that's when you fight dirty. they never did that again.

my dad used to try and assault me now and again in a drunk mood. or a mean uncle when drunk drunk. "farm boy" was big enough to take it, but by around 15-16 i had enough, and kick some adult ass, and it stopped.

after that, smooth sailing for many years, and no need to fight.

then one day, this asshat who "had some training" decided that he need to break my knees and do that rib and kidney thing. it went from shoving and joshing to "serious injury moment"... that just pisses me off :D no charges were pressed.

fighting (for sport, entertainment, etc) is for losers imho, but if you have to, FINISHING MOVE... :D don't make it a sport.

Wow thats a bold statement. Boxing/MMA/Martial arts has been going on as long as people have been alive. Saying its for losers is crazy. Didnt you take martial arts? Maybe that was Guyon. Red names all look a like to me. But martial arts and boxing is a sport... And its far from being just for losers.

i did say "imho".

actual fighting for sport. is. for. losers. imho.

studying martial arts, is about not fighting :D

I know its just your opinion...... i just think its a wild opinion LMAO

Yes martial arts teaches you to defend yourself... but teaches you NOT to fight unless its unavoidable. I havent studied a lot of martial arts, i took Aikido for a month or 2, and i took some Muay Thai for a little while and a couple krav maga workshops. Aikido was not for me, mostly because it was just defense, waiting for the opponent to grab you just right before you can act. Now i didnt study it long enough to get proficient in it or learn to use the moves in different circumstances, but i would agree Aikido is not about fighting, at least not the part i was there to see, it was all about defense and i never seen a single punch or kick thrown while going to Aikido.... but in Muay Thai... You fight each other in Muay Thai. I loved Muay Thai. Id also like to study Krav Maga more in depth. Its just tiring LMAO

In a lot of martial arts there are competitions, this is a sport and is all about fighting. It teaches you to hone your skills and shows where you are physically. You can train all your life but if you never actually use the skill in a real application you will never know where you stand, you will never even know if your capable of using it in a real world situation. I have seen lots of men both in martial arts and in the military train for a long time.... Get pretty good in qualification or in testing and then when it comes down to it and they need to use what they have trained to do, what they have practiced, studied, and made part of their life.... They choke. Its one thing to know how to throw a punch. Its quite a different thing completely to be able to punch a man in the face when your threatened.

If fighting for sport is for losers... Then what do you call running up and down a field for points, or throwing a ball into a net? At least fighters learn something that is useful not only on the field but in life.

If boxing/MMA/Martial arts competitions are for losers but basketball and football is for winners....Thats just insane. Man I cant even imagine a world where thats the case...

Now this is Just my opinion of course. but a fun topic of conversation none the less.

Excellent... Was planning on getting some of that carbon nanotube body armor to try out, but found a milling machine on craigslist, and will be picking that up instead. Should make my life much easier. I think I'll clean out my shop a bunch over the next couple days to get ready for that :)
Hey crim, congrats on the milling machine. I'd love to play with one; I've instead only used the x-y vise on my drill press (which has way too much runout to be useful in that regard). I may have to go around the corner to the "maker space" if I have a burning need to use the real thing. Take some pics of that clean shop space - I'm thinking about another GAW now that I've started to clean my own space (one of them, at any rate). I can actually see (most of) my benchtop!

well stated, bladite-san.

Care to back that up?
I boxed for 5 years, and did Tae Kwon Do for more than a few as well. I found Boxing to be far more challenging and, in the end, much better for my fitness.

Blindfolded chainsaw fights in a mud pit are fun to watch. I'm not sure it's an actual sport though.

Other than a few scrapes with siblings when I was younger, I have never been in a fight in my life.

Heck, I haven't even put my fist through a wall or left knuckle dents in refrigerators since I was like 15.

studying martial arts, is about not fighting :D

This I agree with. But I also don't think there's anything wrong with testing your skills against others, and practicing in a non-sparring setting. For me, that's a big part of building confidence. If all you can do is spar in the dojo, you're always going to doubt the efficacy of your skills. Yes, for me, martial arts is primarily about self-improvement. But it would be disingenuous to suppose that the MARTIAL aspect of it can be entirely left out. For me, competition is about testing myself and learning my own limitations. It's not about proving who is better (even if only because someone you beat one day may beat you on another day).

The movie Fearless is quite meaningful to me because it aligns pretty closely with how I think about martial arts. Jet Li's character, in the movie, says that "through competition, we can discover ourselves."

It's not that fighting for sport is stupid or that those who do are losers. Motivation matters. True, many who fight for sport do it for, in my estimation, the wrong reasons. But fighting in competition can be very valuable, when done for the right reasons.

Google Hellcat alice mod biscuit.

Yeah, I've looked at that configuration, but frame + Molle straps + Molle belt is more than I want to spend right now.

Red names all look a like to me.

There's actually a log of each individual warning and infraction. :D

That and inanimate pig riding should form the new biathlon.

i have a coupel decades of study. karate (shotokan), kung fu and tai chi chuan, "kick boxing", and ... "other". call it a mix.

at my peak, i could dead lift 450 lbs, clean 350, and punch holes in cinder blocks.

useless shit :D

in a given fight, i could take punishment, and "end it".

useless shit.

i'm now "old"

i can respectfully say that fighting is loser talk :D

imho

that said? anyone stupid enough to attack me is going to taste delicious with the right sauce.

unless i am delicious.

fighting is stupid.

I M H O.

anyone says different? is delicious :D
